5-Bedroom Old Norwood Park 4-Square With “Old World Detail” Now Reduced $97K: 5820 N. Newark
We last chattered about this 5-bedroom American four square at 5820 N. Newark in Old Norwood Park in March 2012.

The overwhelming consensus was that it was a “nice home”, “spectacular” and “best home ever featured on CC.”
But it only has 1.5 baths.
And THAT was a problem for most of you (at this price point.) Most of the comments on the prior post reflect a discussion on whether a second full bath can be added somewhere.
Built in 1890 on an oversized 78×193 lot, it has retained much of its vintage details including stained glass, crown molding and wood doors.
Yet it also has modern conveniences like central air and a wine refrigerator.
The kitchen is described as a “chef’s kitchen” with Viking stainless steel appliances.
4 of the 5 bedrooms are on the second floor with the 5th on the main floor.
The listing also describes the house as having new air conditioning, furnace, electrical, water tank and boiler.
The house has been reduced another $52,000 since last March.
Now listed at $768,000, it’s obviously selling for under $800,000 (the question that was asked the last time we chattered about it.)
Is it finally getting closer to the correct price in order to find a buyer?
Or will it have to wait until next spring’s market?

BATHROOM BOONDOGGLED AGAIN!!!
I was thinking what is it that people don’t like about this awesome house then realized its just a 1 bath. for five bedrooms. yikes. Is there not a good place to put it?
Its easy here to add a jack and jill bathroom while only loosing one bedroom. I cant recall if it was the 12×10 or the 14×9. IIRC there will be an extra cost as where i envisioned the 2nd bath as i dont think its plumed up in that area.
its not the the yard is ginormous, which it is, it is also set back off the street about 50′ from the sidewalk and from the side walk to the street its another 10′.
there is also a larger house on a larger lot (yes a larger lot) down the street on newark for more coin. that one has a bathroom so big it has a fricken couch in the bathroom
Beautiful place! Too rich for my blood, though, and that bathroom situation is just killer. I don’t know much about Old Norwood Park, and now my interest has been piqued. Time to check out the crime rate, schools, parks, and coffeeshop/restaurant/bar/gym/farmer’s market situation!
I use to really like this house http://4737nlong.com/ until my wife saw it and realized it only had one full bathroom. half a million dollar + homes need to have more than one full bath.
crime rate is next to nothing – this is where a lot of cops, fireman, and other municipal employees live. Norwood Park is a great school, and Taft isn’t bad either. Resurrection HS (for girls) is walking distance if you want the catholic route. And right off a metra line and the blue line.

While adding the bath I would also add a second floor laundry.

You’re wrong. This is one of the more interesting family-oriented areas in the city and it is hardly far off. There’s a lot more to Chicago than the GZ.

I dont care about Norwood Park, but others might. If this were just a site about homes in this area I would never tune in. But there is nothing wrong with the occassional post about a suburban part of the city and the homes that are for sale there.

i, for one, hate this house. why does everyone like it so much? if you like woodwork, fine, but the landscaping is hideous, the pictures of the park do no good and the wine “area” is a glorified closet. what am i missing? are there shops and restaurants near here? arent you basically in the suburbs?

Grrove – I moved here for school (many, many moons ago) from the east coast – I knew a lot of people who sounded an awful lot like these two back in the day. I think it’s weird that so many people will only acknowledge the existence of approx. 10 square miles of Chicago, but whatever, it’s their loss.

nothing wrong with loving and living in your 7 block radius. but something wrong when you criticize and have never left you 7 block radius.
If i never left my hood i wouldnt have found my tailor who is about 15 miles from my house. or know to go to the far south side to get the best butcher (not moo and oink , lol) to continually wow my BBQ guests. or to go to bowemanville to get some darn good korean bbq. or go to jeff park to get the best perogi’s

where are the shops and restaurants in old norwood? how close is this home to that area? i also said that i do not like the landscaping or the wine fridge or the heavy dark wood. i also do not like the cubs. for me, the GZ is nice because i will not be a stay at home mom; i work in the loop and need to live close to public transportation or the highway to get to work quickly and easily. i am totally open to new neighborhoods, but they must have that access.
hilarious when some probably *whole 3-year-long chicago resident* comes on here and starts bashing one of chicago’s oldest northside neighborhoods,full of 100-120 year old homes.it does need a additional bathroom though.

You didn’t even bother to map it, did you? This is close to *both*. It’s about a quarter mile to the UP-NW stop (a bit of a hike to the Blue Line), and a direct route to the Kennedy, either direction.
i just mapped it. i stand corrected. very close to transportation, the highway, and restaurants and even a gym! i am not looking to move to a home yet, but when i do i can promise you guys i wont limit myself to the gz. it’s one of the reasons i like to look on cc. we cant all be lifelong residents and we need to learn about the city somehow…

you are now my new favorite internet friend. i respect people who can admit mistakes and willingness to change their mind and opinions when valid facts are provided. So I now respect you very much.
BTW old norwood could be considered suburban like but has good ol city folk living there. One family friend of mine that lives in old norwood grew up in what is now called roscoe village. He graduated from lane tech in the 60’s back when it was an all boys school and they had to swim naked.
He moved to norwood because he owned a two flat in what is called north center now, had three boys and wife just popped out twin boys, he knew with 5 boys he needed space for the to burn off energy. Even back then he being a city kid couldnt fathom living in a burb. Old Norwood gave him the best compromise.
all that said if i could get the same house with the same lot for the same price in Lincoln Park, yes i would choose LP without hesitation. But because it not that situation Old norwood is just as wonderful place with LP you just loose the density and walkablity. In old norwood you get a very family friendly community where kids ride their bikes to thier friends house without worry. they are preteens playing floor hockey in the street and neighbors trying to take a walk but cant because they end up stopping to shoot the shyte with other neighbors.
Now being single and kidless yes you can get by, but there are better hoods to be single and kidless in than old norwood.

your right groove on all counts,and if your kid-less it might be a little boring….i used to make due with all the bars on NW hwy to amuse myself in my kid-less days.
If I had enough family for the bedrooms…then yeah, I would need a second full bath. But if you just want some extra house, it’s not as necessary. I live in a 4-bedroom bungalow w/a family of 3 (one extra bedroom’s an office, the other is a guest room). and 1.5 baths is actually okay for us.
I do mostly love this house, but I’m going to have to agree w/ sarahs on at least two points: the stupid closet wine cellar, and that hideous patio out back. WTF? It’s not a villa on the sea, it’s a damned backyard in Chicago. The house is Prairie school, the bricked patio is some kinda faux-italianate or something. YUCK.
