Love Churches? This One Can Be All Yours In Logan Square: 3232 W. Wrightwood

We’ve chattered about many condo units in former churches as well as churches that were converted into single family homes before.

This 4-bedroom church at 3232 W. Wrightwood in Logan Square is one of the single family home types. (Thanks to Chris M, our Logan Square neighborhood expert, for the picture.)

The listing says it was formerly the Logan Square Baptist Church.

It has many of its original features includes wood work, windows and cathedral, beamed ceilings in what is now the living room.

The church has some unique features like 2 full kitchens.

Two of the bedrooms are on the second floor with the other two on the main level.

Built on a larger than normal residential lot of 39×160, it also has a 2-car garage and central air.

Originally listed in September 2012 for $1.429 million, it has been reduced $79,000.

Will this be a hard sell at this price point in this location or will the uniqueness close the deal?

Jamie Connor at Conlon has the listing. See the pictures here.

  1. This may be the coolest place ever featured on CC. Love it!

  2. Great job on the reno. The trouble with many church renos is that they sacrifice practicality for grandeur. Leaving the main living space completely open may look amazing, but can be totally impractical when it comes to actually living there — trying to heat/cool a living room with 50-foot ceilings is no small task.

This one seems to have cut up the space enough to make it liveable while retaining most of the cool church characteristics.

  3. Thanks for posting my suggestion, Sabrina! It’s amazing how many times I’ve walked by this place and never realized it was a residence until just recently.

Also, CNN Money did a video interview with the owner a week ago. Very interesting!

  4. Cool place! That is the nicest former church conversion I have seen in a while. I also liked one in SFO that was featured on This Old house. This is a great example of how to fit a kitchen DR and great room in a large space without seeming empty. That is often the challenge with church conversions. Too bad it is located on the 3200 block. Put that in the 1200 block and it would be an easier sell. $1M+ for this is a fairly small niche due to the location.

I have another option for a former church house. I’d bet that this could be picked up for around 900K leaving you with $450K for the conversion. Did I mention that it is 21,000 feet vs 6000 ft. Because of the size I suspect that there could be 5 large condos created out of this former church. The good news is that it is in downtown PR right near the train, within a block from the new Whole Foods, four blocks from a great grade school, and in a much safer area.

Anyone else want to live in a church condo in PR? If I get four of you to say yes I will put it under contract today and begin chopping it into 5 great raw spaces. There will be the tower, altar, basement, baptisimal, and the confessional suites. Be the first to reply and you get to pick your suite!

  6. I’m surprised how much I like the interior, though I’d do away with a few chandeliers and I’m not a fan of open bedrooms. This place might actually work as a SFH. Good location, too, if you like Logan Square.

  9. Too bad they didn’t keep the church sign board – you could have a lot of fun with that. I love the main living area. You could throw some amazing parties here, it would be perfect for someone who entertains a lot.

  13. Awesome. Is it me or are those photos a bit out of order? Why not lead with the great room after the exterior shot? Why am I looking the less-cool way down the foyer?

  14. Holy hell, is that a Lucian Freud painting hanging in that one guest bedroom?

  15. “Holy hell, is that a Lucian Freud painting hanging in that one guest bedroom?”

Josh, good eye. Let’s hope not. I’ve had a longstanding instinctive loathing of those who perpetrate gimmick art, a genre of which Lucian Freud was a master. His art was as sordid as his person, reflecting his loathing of human nature in general and women in particular. In the modern age, we are surrounded by manmade ugliness.

  16. I prefer this place over the recently rehabbed house on 3051 W. Logan Blvd that was posted recently.

  17. The owner could be a hunchback for Halloween. The chandeliers look like fun to hang from after a big-time party, hope they’re anchored in well. I like this better than Jerry Kleiner’s place, it has more light.

  19. No surprise…it went under contract several days ago. Less than 3 weeks on the market.

  21. This home just closed for $1.185mm, it’s an amazing space. It’s actually a pretty good price based on $/sf for a high quality home.
