  3. Slightly off topic, but can we use a different description than “stainless steel” for these types of appliances? Stainless-like, faux stainless, crap, etc…

    It’s akin to calling many units on here “loft like” since it’s just some stainless (or aluminum) cover on a regular fridge, stove, d/w. Whereas SS should be reserved for stuff like Viking.

  4. Agree with the sentiment, DailyNews, but find it highly unlikely to change. Yes, lumping my powerful and gorgeous Viking range in with something crappy that has a thin coating of stainless cover is not descriptive; however, most listings of high-end kitchens mention brands now (Wolf/Viking/Bosch/etc.) to make the distinction. On a related note, I’ve had just as many troubles with SubZero and Wolf as I have with plain Jane appliances (and those service calls are an expensive PITA).

    And what if you get a Mint Julep Viking range? Would you still call it Stainless Steel?

    Do you expect the realtors to (a) not use the description of the appliance used by the manufacturer, and (b) actually label the appliances as “crap”? Also, if labeling them “crap” should the realtors also–in order to not have deceptive pix, leading a less diligent viewer than you to perhaps believe the appliances are “stainless steel”–photoshop “crap” into the kitchen pix over the appliances before posting on the MLS?

    I hate seeing people driving their 1ers around as the BMW badge on thoes faux-bimmers simply isn’t descriptive of the power and gorgeosity of my (early release) M6 convertible.

It’s crazy that stainless steel appliances are worth mentioning when the value of 3 typical low to mid-grade appliances is perhaps 1.5 to 3K compared to a purchase of several hundred K or more (though admittedly a lot of young buyers seem to value ready-to-move-in places with the right color cabinets/appliances/countertops over the far more important issues of construction quality, location, views, etc.)

  8. I remember when this behemoth was being built… surprised the finishes are as nice as they are. The location is sorta meh unless you’re dead set on living in wrigleyville

  9. Touche… If you seriously like to cook, though, it really is apples and oranges. I say this as someone who wouldn’t shell out for a Bimmer pretty much ever, unless money starting growing on trees and every formerly starving child in Africa had already been fed.

    This unit is listed as “contingent” already, and if you like the Cubbies, the views, public transit, and proximity to the lake, I can totally see why.

  11. But back to the building. I partied in this building once–this is a “Woo!” building.

    That is, this is a building 20-somethings buy to “own” via extensive leverage, that has a weird balcony that is covered (not much noon sunshine) to invite their friends over for beer pong in the summer out on that balcony, and get drunk and look at the downtown Chicago skyline, and thinking themselves masters of the universe, proceed to scream WOO!!

    I’d stay away from this building. As those former self-perceived masters of the universe circa 2007 are now growing older and crapping out kids now that they’re early 30s, and looking to run to the burbs. There will be mass exodus. And there may well be HOA pains in buildings like this.

    Agreed. Broadway once you get north of Grace feels a lot more like Uptown than Boystown or Wrigleyville.

  13. Yeah, you’re right, please keep your sour-grapes attitude on the location, assessments, and Woo factor. I really don’t want grinches living in my well-appointed, fantastically run HOA w/reserves, gem of a building. Crabs need not apply: we’ll keep our wonderful blend of diverse, intelligent, kind owners.

  14. Historical trivia time: I believe the official name here is the “Marigold Condominiums” named in honor of the famous bowling alley it replaced. Across the street is a church that used to be the Marigold boxing arena. Major heavyweight fights of the pre-Ali era took place here.
    Yep, believe it or not this little patch of Lakeview-east-of-Wrigley used to be one jumpin’ hood!

  17. The second “bedroom” is behind the french doors when you walk in. My friends live in a unit very similar to this and that second bedroom doesn’t have a window.

    If I remember correctly this developer was sued (or was threatened to be sued) by a number of owners who bought this unit preconstruction as a 2/2 because the unit could not pass inspection because of the lack of a window/correct ventilationn in the 2nd bedroom. Basically its a one bedroom with a really big second walk in closet.

    Im not sure there is any required section 8 but the building was part of a Chicago Housing program where some percentage had to be sold below market to lower income individuals.

  21. Lunker – the previous building at this location was a bowling alley. And no, there was no “Section 8” issue. Perhaps you’re thinking of the condos above the old Goldblatt’s (later Borders) at Broadway/Lawrence. A percentage of them were sold at lower prices to persons who fit certain financial criteria. This was done in quite a few condo proects during the last decade.
