  1. You call it comtempo… I call it “zany”. And I could not come home to my zany house. This house must have been designed by a trigonometry teacher.

  2. “This house must have been designed by a trigonometry teacher.”

Or a Moldovan architect two years out of Universitatea Tehnic? a Moldovei whose view of western architecture is filtered through an Eastern European lens, and this house is inspired by a spring break tour of new construction in east Berlin in 1996. Somehow he won the visa lottery and now designs modern Stalinist architecture with a distinctly Carpathian flavor.

  3. The biggest mistake in my opinion would be the lack of a third bedroom upstairs, but, since it’s been under contract 3x, that can’t be too much of a distraction, especially since most that live here probably don’t have children.

  4. I kinda like it, in a zany way. Not sure how I’d feel about being surrounded by light manufacturing, however.

  5. I like this crazy house. The vertical blinds are terrible though and I imagine it would cost a future for new window treatments.

  6. “Has been under contract three times” suggests that house has a significant flaw discovered during inspection.

  9. Looks like Dryvit – if water gets in behind there, it’s bad news. Those crazy window shapes probably aren’t helping on that front.

Would such a flaw have to be disclosed to subsequent buyers?

  15. Dryvit, people run from that stuff like they run from the plague. You don’t have to disclose dryvit because its not a defect even though most buyers treat it as such.

hd: will you please stop defaming Moldovans? this ugly crap is as kosher as Daniel Libeskind. Stick to what you know, which isn’t culture.

  21. “Will you stop defaming Poles?”

Daniel Libeskind is ashkenazi Jewish, not “Polish”. “Pick-up” Polish architecture is preferable to Jewish- inspired stuff like the subject property, and that of Libeskind, etc. That’s a compliment to the Poles. I never, ever put down Eastern Europeans with derisive comments like you do. over and out.

  24. How is this area in general though? How far south/west can you go while still feeling safe to walk around at night?

  25. StanfordMom: I don’t like this deal but in my opinion while this area looks sketchy/ industrial it seems safe and the area around it is improving too. This is less than a 3 block walk from Twisted Spoke & Starbucks on Ogden, Breakfast Club on Hubbard and Uncle Mike’s Place & Upper Crust Bakery on Grand. Bari, D’Amato’s and Vinnie Sub’s are maybe a 4-5 block walk as is the El stop on Lake Street.

  26. I live in this area and feel that it’s pretty safe; I don’t see sketchy groups of people wandering or just hanging out at night, maybe b/c there’s not much around. I generally like the area, but I don’t like west of Ashland nearly as much; mostly because you lose the convenience of the blue line/highway somewhat. I’m less worried than I was living in Old Town or Lincoln park, had bad experiences in those neighborhoods.

  27. Yeah this is not the house for us but the area is really convenient for us logistically, just not too familiar with it. Thanks for the info!

  28. Hubbard St. btw “hubbard cave” and Ogden is pretty cool. This location sucks. Grand & Ashland is a dismal with capital D intersection, I think at the NWC there’s a 4 am bar/club which attracts a “vibrant” Latino crowd, it used to be an area for heroin dealers, didn’t the Smashing Pumpkins’ blonde get busted there? found it:

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/former-pumpkins-bassist-nabbed-on-drug-charges-20000209 plus: “The ex–Smashing Pumpkin and a friend were arrested after allegedly buying three bags of crack cocaine on the 1600 block of West Grand Avenue. D’arcy’s lawyer cut a deal in narcotics court requiring her attendance in drug awareness and prevention school. To replace D’arcy, Corgan quickly hired Hole’s Melissa Auf Der Maur, effectively stealing Courtney Love’s treasured bassist.”
