Shhh…Mies Preferred Vintage at 200 East Pearson

200 East Pearson in Streeterville/Gold Coast is that rare building that you might walk by a million times before realizing that people actually live there.

Just east of Michigan Avenue, across from the Museum of Contemporary Art, 200 East Pearson was built in 1916. It has only 10 units.

From Chicago Apartments: A Century of Lakefront Luxury:

The ten-apartment residence bears Renaissance-inspired details that have variously been linked to the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence and the Palazzo Farnese in Rome.

The brown brick building, with cast concrete and metal trim, is locally celebrated as the home of Mies van der Rohe, who continued living there after completing and apparently briefly contemplating moving to his Lake Shore Drive Glass Houses a few blocks away.

There is no parking with the building, but there are washer/dryers. The building allows 70% financing.

  2. Yeah that live-in engineer must be a petroleum engineer because it sounds like he’s making six figures to me!

  3. You know, I was thinking when Sabrina posted this, if they would fire the engineer and rent his unit out as income to the building (or sell it), I would be wildly interested in this property because of the location.

It reminds me of this absolutely beautiful vintage co-op in Hyde Park that I’d kill to live at… except that it also has monthly assessments in the thousands. Why? Among other things, your monthly assessment “entitles” you to something like 10 hours of free painting services per year for your unit. No, I’m not making that up. It’s crazed.
