Ever Wonder What This Penthouse Looks Like? 431 W. Oakdale in East Lakeview

431 w oakdale #1

The penthouse at 431 W. Oakdale in East Lakeview came on the market in May 2017.

The building was constructed in 1928, just before the Great Depression, when a couple dozen of these luxury apartment buildings (there were no condos then) were being built.

Unit 15C and 15D were combined in the early 2000s.

It now has views in all directions, 2 gas fireplaces and 4000 square feet.

The elevator opens directly into the unit, which also sports a 28×7 barrel vaulted foyer.

The kitchen has dark wood cabinets and stainless steel appliances.

There’s also a separate wet bar/catering kitchen with wine fridges.

There’s also a master suite with a fireplace, a dressing room and a spa bath.

The unit has a den and a family room.

There’s steam heat and it’s unclear if it has central air. The listing says it does, but there’s a window a/c unit in what looks like the paneled den.

There’s also no in-unit washer/dryer or deeded parking.

Listed at just $244 a square foot, is that a deal for this neighborhood?

  1. The listing says the den with the wood paneling was used for wine storage, hence the auxiliary AC. My kind of place if only it had a terrace.

  2. The price seems reasonable. I wonder why it’s priced so low.

  4. Assmts are $2K per month, no in unit laundry, radiator heat (I wonder if there are any lovely knocking sounds all winter long), no outdoor space. This isn’t that great of a deal.

  6. Wonder how this building compares price wise with other vintage high rises like 3100 N. Sheridan and 415 W. Aldine?

Price seems fair for size and neighborhood…

  9. “what is next to the tub in the bathroom?”

It’s either a vent for jacuzzi/steam/whatever system or a ridiculous radiator cover. I’d guess the latter.

  10. I lived in this building from 2000-2004 in the A tier. It is a really beautiful building but the no w/d was tough. And yes, you do indeed have the loud knocking as the radiators come on which took awhile to,get used to! I rented parking in the senior housing on LSD about 2 blocks east. I really loved my unit!
