Buy a Triplex Penthouse With Lake Views from 2-Story Windows: 221 E. Walton in the Gold Coast

221 e walton

This 3-bedroom triplex penthouse in 221 E. Walton in the Gold Coast came on the market in October 2017.

If it looks familiar, that’s because we’ve chattered about it several times over the years with the last chatter in May 2013.

See our chatter here.

If you recall, this unit has a 2-story living room with 18 foot ceilings and 2-story windows that overlook the lake and East Lake Shore Drive.

The master bedroom is lofted and also has lake views. The second bedroom was converted into a huge closet and it also has a granite master bathroom with a whirlpool and steam shower.

It appears that the master bedroom is open to the lower level living area.

This unit has the unique feature of a 3rd floor sunroom with a wet bar, dishwasher and television along with a private terrace.

The terrace used to have a hot tub but it looks like that has now been removed.

According to the last listing, it has 12 skylights.

There’s also a library with a murphy bed.

There’s no central air as it has wall units but it does have 2 ground level parking spots included.

Built in 1981, there are just 26 units.

The listing acknowledges that this 3-bedroom unit has been turned into a 1-bedroom with a library.

In 2013, we asked if it would finally sell in the hotter market but we now know the answer was “no.”

5 years later, will this unit finally find a buyer?

Barbara Steinhauser at Baird & Warner now has the listing. See the pictures here.

  1. So where is the dividing line between Gold Coast and Streeterville? I agree with Google that it’s Oak Street/ E Lake Shore Dr.

  5. “So where is the dividing line between Gold Coast and Streeterville?”

The map that the Trib uses puts the line (insanely) at Grand east of Mich, and over to State from Chicago north to Division.

I usually think Pearson, over to Rush.

  6. This place has potential, but it needs to be gutted… The price doesn’t seem to reflect this fact imho. People want turn key and despite the lake view, terrace, and decent square footage, people at this price point have higher expectations decor/finish wise.

  8. Interesting place. Great view! Probably can’t open the windows in the summer due to rising pollution and from LSD. It’s probably noisy from LSD too.

There is no informal seating in or near the kitchen. There is only a formal dining room for eating. That is not my lifestyle and not the lifestyle of most people I know.

One thing I noticed is there are no windows shades, only heavy curtains. I know the sunlight can be intense in a lake front condo and window shades are a must. I wonder how they have managed without shades.

The deck is a long way from the kitchen. Unless I missed a kitchenette somewhere, that is a negative to me.

If I were entertaining a small group for dinner or having a large whole-house party, this place would be great. It seems like the target market is a middle aged couple with no kids who like to entertain.

  9. Total pied a terre. The house is in Lake Forest, the spouse who is a partner at the Law Firm uses this to entertain clients. I’m surprised it’s still on the market.
