We Love Views: 161 E. Chicago in Streeterville

There’s something cool about a high floor duplex that looks out over the city- especially if you have views of the John Hancock Building. It is stunning at night.

This duplex on the 58th floor of the Olympia Centre at 161 E. Chicago just says “cool.”

  1. Interesting. 3.5 baths with only 2 bedrooms. At the other end of the spectrum from the 3 bedroom places with only 2 baths – which drives me crazy. I guess if you entertain a lot or have a high fiber diet…

  2. GL–

Probably just not taking out existing baths when they cobined units. It would be pretty silly to go to the expense to remove something that would be (relatively) difficult to re-install.

Plus, it’s got an office, a library and a rec room, any (or all) of which could be “hidden” temporary guest rooms.

  4. Units in this building have been featured in nearly every design rag out there…. This has always been a class act building, like Water Tower Place… It will likely always remain so.

  5. Funny.. I looked at one of the duplexes only 2 years ago and about 10 floors lower for 1.7 if I remember correctly. This one is more tastefully done though

  6. Some present owners are trying to bail out of this building because of the new Children’s Memorial Hospital that is going up east of here on Chicago Avenue. There is a perception that the hospital will make 161 East Chicago less desirable. They can expect noise, dust, and disruption during construction. There is also the controversial plan to put a helipad on top of the hospital for mercy flights; the noise of a helicopter amid the highrises is deafening and the risk of accidents is alarming some people.

  7. I really love this building. My parents have a pied-a-terre 1BR in this building… I think their whole unit would fit in this unit’s “master dressing room.”

  8. I really liked it also, awesome location. funny thing is my wifes biggest issue, of all things, was that she hated the idea of being next to that Walgreens. And thought it made the lower side facade of the place ugly. As i said, i loved it, but i know better than to not compromise with her.

  12. There have been some other issues with Olympia Center that could result in some folks wanting out–but it’s only (well substantiated) rumor, so I won’t spread the spare details I know.

  13. The idea of a pied-a-terre makes no sense to me if housing prices aren’t rising at double digit rates annually. Why would you piss away all that money in holding costs every month for a place you only occaisionally use? Hotel rooms would be far cheaper and with no continuing obligations.

  14. We are getting a pied-a-terre downtown because we’re in the city at least 2 weekends a month but we have a dog. We’d be down there much more often if we didn’t have to drive back for the pooch.

  15. Pete, It’s fine if you can make a buck or two but it’s not just that. It’s about ” my place” It is my favorite chair, always have my clothes in the closet, my food in the frig. I always have a room during air& water show. I have a place to stop and shower. It’s the perfect guest room for the out of towner’s as they love to be downtown ( relatives never will pay for a hotel).Hotels have their benefits but they can never be a home.

  16. If that was my place to stop and shower I would ditch my Bally’s membership, for sure.

  17. It looks like an office building with office decor. Does the unit have that ever-present “hissing” sound like so many office bldg. HVAC systems have?
