Live IN the Elevator Shaft: 14 N. Peoria in the West Loop

Want unique? This tri-level brick loft unit on the market at the Hale Lofts at 14 N. Peoria in the West Loop is in the building’s old elevator shaft.

It’s the only unit on the 8th floor of the building.

Here are the dimensions for the rooms:

  • Living room: 14×14 (first floor)
  • Kitchen: 11×10 (second floor)
  • Bedroom: 13×15 (third floor)

It has two private outdoor spaces with one that has direct downtown views.

The unit has hardwood floors and the kitchen has stainless steel appliances and granite counter tops. The bathroom also has a custom “cement troft bathroom sink.”

Because of its location on the roof of the building, the listing says it has its own private entrance.

Anyone been to this property to really understand what that means? Do you go outside to enter your unit? Please report in.

Tracy Gola at Prudential Rubloff has the listing. See the pictures here.

  1. very unique, and would’ve gone fast back during the boom, but I don’t think people will want this for anymore than $250k, but then again, how do you get into this place?

  2. This is pretty unique. Properties like this don’t really have comps so its hard to say but I could easily see this selling at ask.

I like this unit a lot, its just too bad I don’t like the hood.

  4. You need to gut this place so knock $100K off. The fireplace, the kitchen, the teal windows, glass block circa 1979 gotta go. bathroom is weird, and needs work. Could be a sophisticated loft…

There’s the other elevator shaft loft (yeah, surrounding and including the shaft, rather than in the shaft, but still) we discussed on here at 110 N Peoria (had to look that up); what did that sell for?

  7. The unit can be entered by walking up a half of fligh of stairs from the 7th floor. The entrance is completely enclosed and you never walk outside. While small, there are some nice views and the unit resides in a building where the condo association takes great pride in its upkeep. In fact, from the unit you can see that there was a new roof put on half the building and a new common deck. For a true loft building that is mid-sized, I haven’t seen many buildings that compare in the general upkeep of all the common elements.

  8. how in the f88k has this not sold?
i want to be able to say i live in a fricken elevator shaft! if i was single do you know how many girls i can get back to my place just by working the conversation to “i live in a elevator shaft” conversation.

besides the horrible bathroom tile job, ah screw it that whole bathroom is the ickiest thing i ever saw. (and i had to use a gas station bathroom in the hood once when i got the emergency Hershey squirts)

  9. Unit 8A went for 265 in the HEIGHT of the bubble and this owner wants more than that?

  10. Groove this would be the ultimate bachelor pad IF it was in the right neighborhood. Its not a bad hood overall but its no LP/LV in my view.

One of the regulars at one of the bars near me had a guy who worked in a gym nearby and they let him live in the storage room. But I don’t think it impressed the ladies much.

  11. Ahh, you speak of mark in the storage room at 3230 N Sheffield. I used to live in that building in an actual APT. Nice guy but it was a little strange at first.

dude its all about game and how you talk about it. and the location is better for this cause she will see your not a LP/LV douche (no offence) so the being different thing now helps the game.

the negative/backfire is she may pull the, “its so far from my place” do you mind if i stay overnight.

yeah the price is insane for the area, and it look as though you come in the front door out of the cold to take the elevator to the roof get out in the cold on your patio and walk to your “private entrance”.

but dooode you live in an elevator shaft, this is not a logical purchase at all, this is i bought a 1br elevator shaft!

Yeah clearly the Groove and Bob are/were chasing different segments. The skirts I chase are 100% angst free.

  17. Was recently in unit 5E in that building with a client. We liked it. One of the rooms was inside the “old” elevator shaft and was 15 x 11. So sounds like this unit might really be completely contained within that shaft and those are really small floors then. That wide angle photography really does wonders.

  18. Nahhh. Looks like the kitchen is in a different section – probably outside the shaft. Still, very small floors.

And they appear to be counting outdoor space in that 1050 SF (and, really, probably the parking space, too). To beat that drum some more.

  21. The ONLY way this place sells anywhere near current ask is if it qualifies for FHA, the new subprime lender of choice. Anyone who could afford to put down real money for this place wouldn’t want it.

  23. There was a similar unit at 215 N. Aberdeen listed on Crib Chatter a few weeks back. It was also in west loop and had the same small floor plate. I wonder which one will go under contract first.

I love the west loop and really like the loft vibe but find this space almost difficult to actually live in. Imagine all those groceries up and down. You could cook a great meal in that kitchen but where do you eat? The small living room also needs a small table which kills the vibe. Does this bathroom have a sepreate shower? It looks like a tub only in the photo and no seperate shower was listed. Interesting space but the kitchen and bath need a serious upgrade. If someone put the money into it to make it more modern and cool perhaps it could truly sell as a small bachelor penthouse.

  24. I would not live in LP/LV is I was a bachelor. You’d be down in GC or West Loop. Minimal travel time.

  25. I ound the other listing on Aberdeen. It is not really a comp as that one is a 3bd with 1750 sq ft. that is listed at $459K. Sorry for the bad comparison. They do share the same developer idea of trying to make something ccool out of an odd shaped space.
