Former Home of R. Kelly Sells in Lakeview for $1.25 Million Under List: 1010 W. George

We last chattered about this 4-bedroom single family home at 1010 W. George in Lakeview in January 2011.

At that time, it was listed at $3.89 million and I asked, “can you sell a single family home for nearly $4 million in Lakeview?”

Apparently the answer is “No.”

The house recently sold for $2,640,618.

Yes, this is the former home of singer R. Kelly. He was NOT the seller this time around, however.

He sold the house in 2005.

The house is unique as it was originally a 1885 church.

Bought from the bank in 2008 and, according to other media reports, extensively renovated, it had lofted ceilings, a knotty pine spa room, an elevator, a 1500 square foot roof top terrace and an indoor pool.

Not only was it the most expensive home on the block, but when we chattered about it, i was the most expensive completed home currently on the market in Lakeview.

(There were two others listed for more than this one- but both are new construction spec homes- which haven’t yet been built.)

Does this sale set a price ceiling for luxury houses in Lakeview?

  7. It looks like a CTA warehouse or old welding shop, and next to the old gas station now Enterprise. Better if the corner lot was developed and added onto this “SFH”.

  9. I can’t imagine who would pay this type of money for a place like this. I would have to believe it was someone who got their money the easy way (inheritance or some major business deal). I would love to know who bought it – I have several investment opportunities for this type of person.

  10. Haters gonna hate, lovers gonna love, I just want to do, none of the above, I want to piss on you… Also, this Enterprise always has the best cars, in my experience. Hyundai Genesis? Hyundai? For real. Drive it, then you’ll be saying Hyundai Genesis!

    Anyway, I wonder how much the 2008 buyer put in to make it look like this. With the open spaces and minimalist design, it’s hard to believe it’s more than $1 million, but who knows. Exterior is ugly, obviously, and location is not great, but it’s tough to tell if this one is a deal or not without seeing a floorplan and knowing the square footage. Unique property, to be sure.

  12. It’s a very interesting house, but the fact that R. Kelly owned it freaks me out. I would always be questioning, “Did he urinate here or here or here?” I think the only recourse in a case like this would be to tear the entire house down, much like a severe case of mold or something.

  14. The home has been featured on LXTV Chicago and looks interesting, but lots of space wasted on tall ceilings. Years ago when R. Kelly own the home, my friend (who is African American) used to work at Enterprise as a manager and she wondered why there were always black girls outside the building next to Enterprise at all hours. Then, she found out who the owner was…
    However, I do feel it is an odd property to develop being next to an Enterprise.

    whatever…I would happily move in a nice house. Who cares about the previous owner. Also in fairness to R Kelly the chick was 15 and she did not look like a child by long shot. Oh and it is some of the most normal looking people who do the creepiest things.
    Interior is mad cool. Now the exterior makes me wanna puke.

    One of the most important things to me, is that when I move, I feel it was I who defiled the property beyond what any owner previous, or to follow, could ever even dream of matching. This property makes me feel so unworthy. One can only imagine what art could be uncovered with an application of luminol. It should be given historic designation.

    why stick up for him? he’s an adult who has chosen his own actions which have resulted in a history of charges of child porn and having sex with a minor.
    maybe sometimes there are people who do care about the previous owner or history (even though r kelly was not the seller this time). buying a house of a famous singer or athlete or a house where an infamous event occured may positively or negatively contribute to time on the market or sales price.

With all of the negative comments about this house BECAUSE of R kelly, I think I hit on a great business idea: find houses that are desirable but expensive, perform some perceived immoral or unethical act in the house and just wait for the price to fall because of the morons who buy based on a previous tenants’ behavior (as if the previous tenants in most houses were saints).

  21. Clio, I can’t get past the idea of knowing that the former owner urinated in places other than the toilet inside the house.

    It’s difficult enough for me to go to hotel rooms, knowing that everything is covered in various bodily fluids. I can’t imagine living in such a place.

    It’s from 2009, appears to be prior to the most recent renovation, has some crazy pictures in it of stuff from R. Kelly’s ownership.

    Also mentions they tore out the floor where the “event” occurred, as “they were unable to wash away the creepiness”

  24. I looked at this place when it was on the market in 08. the R Kelly fallout was the least of its issues. The roof had a large hole, water was pooling in the main room, and the stench of mold was so strong you could barely stay in the property for more than 2 minutes at a time.

  25. Great job to the flippers who had to make some serious cash on this one.

    Westloopelo any idea on the reno costs, holding costs, and in the end what they likely cleared.
