Love Mid-Century Modern? A 3-Bedroom Townhouse at 400 W. Surf in Lakeview

2900 n sheridan

This mid-century modern townhouse at 400 W. Surf in East Lakeview just came on the market.

Built in 1953, there are 18 units in this complex on the corner of Sheridan and Surf.

We’ve chattered about this complex before.  The pictures above and below are of some of the townhouses on the Sheridan side, but you get the idea of what the complex looks like.

2900 n sheridan #2

This particular unit is on the corner of Surf and Sheridan and has a large, private outdoor terrace that is landscaped and fenced in.

The living room has floor-to-ceiling doors that open onto the outdoor terrace.

The kitchen overlooks the front yard and has gray cabinets, stainless steel appliances and stone counter tops.

It has the layout that buyers look for with all three bedrooms are on the second floor. The master bedroom has a walk-in closet and its own master bathroom.

The listing says all the bathrooms have been remodeled.

There are skylights and the listing says it has a newer roof.

The townhouse has a lower level family room with a 100 inch projection television and massive 21×12 laundry and utility rooms.

It has central air and garage parking is included, which I believe is in an underground garage for the complex.

The listing says the property is in the Nettlehorst school district.

Is this the perfect family starter home in this neighborhood?

Michael Hall at Baird & Warner has the listing. See the pictures here.

  1. This little slice of heave will sell soon.
Concerned about cabinets and no vent (?) over such a cook top and hoping that the banister was merely casting a shadow and that there isn’t actually a stain on the ceiling in the basement rec room. All in though, high potential for a bidding war here.

I lived at 2850 N Sheridan, right across the street, when I first relocated here. This location ROCKS. Commute by bus downtown can be time consuming. It is a little hike to the brown line from here and the Diversey bus is frequently stuck in traffic so it is faster to walk from here to the brown line than to take the bus (at least during rush hours)

You are practically on the lake which is a pretty fair trade.

  2. I like this place as well. The natural light is meh, but great location and elementary school. I agree with Liz that the commute is tough from here, but you’re right on the lake! I love the stairs. I wonder what the square footage is.

  3. The best feature is the trees in the patio. I bet it took a few years for them to reach that level of perfection.

  4. I lived in a one-bed in a walk-up immediately to the west (you can see the kitchen windows of the unit in Sabrina’s pic). Even from that distance, there was a fairly audible “Route 151, Sheridan to…” soundtrack playing at all hours. But yes, a great location (in a year of living there, I don’t think I took a train once, just the bus).

  5. It’s in the Nettlehorst school district which is a good option. The HOA is nearly $400 per month, I wonder what that includes. All in all, it’s a great place, but the three story living can be taxing.

  6. Needs uniform design standards for entire complex. Some units look really crappy from outside and it detracts from the overall complex.

  7. “Route 151, Sheridan to…”

I lived at 2930 on the third floor and that woke me up every damn day. Buses and trucks also made the floor vibrate pretty noticeably. It isn’t a place for a light sleeper.

  8. If I had about $600k to spend, I’d definitely go take a look at this place.
