Inside the Two Bedroom Units at 550 St. Clair

Apparently, several of you have recently toured this two bedroom flip at 550 St. Clair in Streeterville.

Tipsters told me that it has pocket doors that lead into several of the bedrooms.  You can’t tell it from the pictures, but the master bathroom is apparently completely open into the master bedroom- ala “European style.”  Basically, if you’re standing at the sink washing your face, anyone in the bedroom can watch what you’re doing.

There is also, apparently, a sliding pocket door to close off the toilet area. So there is privacy there.

Anyone else see this unit?  Do you have comments on this unique configuration?

Will 550 St. Clair give 600 N. Fairbanks a run for its money?

  1. The kitchen is great for a studio or a small 1 bedroom but for a 2 BR it just doesnt seem acceptable. I also find it odd that none of the floor plans on their website have any dimensions. This would have certainly turned me off from buying here pre-construcion.

  2. I’ve been in this unit – or at least this “tier.” I agree with marco, great kitchen for a STUDIO! They probably dont list room dimensions because they’re so small.

I’ve seen a worse kitchen than this in a 07 tier 2 br at 600 fairbanks

  4. What was their thinking regarding the kitchen? Did the developer give an option for an island, or is this the way most of the kitchens were designed? Although I am a modernist myself, I am still not sure I like the raw concrete ceilings.

  5. I have been in the unit and it did have some pretty good closet space for its square footage. The kitchen would be VERY tight for storage and prep space. In addition, there were no junction boxes in the ceiling for lighting. There was “atmospheric” lighting in some areas but that was it. The bathroom may be a stickler for most Chicagoans. The unit felt smaller than mine (05 tier at 600 N. Fairbanks) but it was not as bad as I thought. Interestingly, the agent kept referring to 600 Fairbanks and stated her unit felt more spacious than a three bedroom in there. We will see how it plays out!

  6. Everything about this unit other than the walls & floors is absolutely hideous.

If I wanted to live in an eastern-bloc soviet style flat & building I’d move to Lithuania and get it a lot cheaper.

Err…then again with the way the dollars going its probably about the same.

When I see this building four letters immediately spring to mind: CCCP!

  7. These units are horrendous, I agree Bob. To even suggest a comparison to 600 NF is out there. (Sorry Sabrina 🙂 ).
And the kitchens are an utter disgrace.

I believe this tier had square footage somewhere in the 1100s.

  8. Great views in higher units. Decent storage in master. But small rooms with flimsy narrow pocket doors. Master closet opens into bathroom – great for growing mold. Impractical shower/bath configuration in guest/master bathrooms. Cheap particle board cabinets and strange location for island in kitchen. Otherwise, this is a great loc, with lots of light and good architecture. The agent was very nice and I think the seller is willing to negotiate…

  9. What do you guys think of the 03 tier? I think the 04 and 03 tiers in some cases have the same layout, I see that 2203 is now on the market for a little over $600K. 1104 is also on the market, but for at about the same price and the same floor plan, I think the 2203 is probably a better deal given it’s on a much higher floor??

How’s the South East Exposure? What’s up and coming in that exposure new construction wise?

How’s this building compared to the 02 or 05 tier in 600 N. Fairbanks? I have been to the Fairbanks so many times now, but not sure about 600 NF because of the number of flippers in the building and also the EXPENSIVE parking space! However, I agree the finishes in the fairbanks are much nicer then those here, would you agree? But it seems the price here at St. Clair seems to be better.. I am not sure I like the long hall-way heading to the living room though, seems to be not of an efficient use of space…
