1-Bedroom Vintage Beauty in the Mews for $299,000: 1368 E. 57th in Hyde Park
This 1-bedroom in the Mews at 1368 E. 57th in Hyde Park came on the market in April 2024 and just recently went contingent.
Normally, I don’t post on contingent properties, but this building is so special, I wanted to feature it.
The Mews was built in 1914 and has 24 units. Designed by Robert Spencer in the Prairie School style, it does not appear to have any amenities nor parking.
This unit has many of its vintage elements including hardwood floors, a brick fireplace with wood bookshelves, stained wood moldings and rebuilt leaded glass windows.
It has a formal entry foyer with stained wood paneling walls.
Yet it also has modern features.
The kitchen has been “updated” and has light wood cabinets, stainless steel appliances and stone counter tops.
There’s a dining room and also a small office off the bedroom.
The listing says the bathroom is “newly rehabbed” and is now “luxury” with a walk-in-shower.
The unit has in-unit washer/dryer which is located in the rehabbed bathroom. It does not have central air but has a window unit.
There’s no parking.
This is also a rare vintage unit that also has a private outdoor balcony which is off the living room.
This building is in the heart of the University of Chicago campus and is near the shops and restaurants of Hyde Park.
Listed at $299,000, it took 26 days to go under contract. That is 2 days less than the average time on the market in March 2024 of 28 days.
With rents rising, does it now make sense to buy a 1-bedroom condo to lock in your expenses?
Robert Sullivan at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices has the listing. See the pictures and floor plan here.

Nice place
$400/sf seems pretty spendy
Seems about perfect for a single UofC prof
As a former condo owner, I’m happy the seller is under contract and will likely get some money out of this. I certainly didn’t.
I didn’t see a picture of the office. I guess it is so small the photographer couldn’t fit. 🙂
I wonder if a young couple could use it as a nursery.
A lovely unit that seems fine for a single person or a young couple. Aa older empty nesters, my wife and I would find this place too small compared to our large home, but others might be OK. There’s just no place to go to be alone except the bedroom. I say that knowing that in Russia a unit this size would probably house two families.
This is the best location in Hyde Park, but parking may be an issue unless it’s permit.
Perfect for the inexperienced homebuyer from either coast, entranced by the finishes, not noticing lack of closet space, not knowledgeable of frequent mismanagement and/or conflicts in small self-managed homeowner association, not conscious of eventual claustrophobic small rooms, not concerned by lack of off-street parking until first big snowstorm.

It’s kind of ironic, then, that the current homeowner has owned it for 17 years.
