4 Months Later, 3-Bedroom French Normandy Still Available in Galewood: 1901 N. Newcastle

1901 n newcastle

We last chattered about this 3-bedroom French Normandy house at 1901 N. Newcastle in Galewood in May 2013.

See our prior chatter here.

Previously, it was the most expensive home on the market in Galewood but that is no longer the case as it has been reduced to $347,000.

If you recall, it was built in 1948 on an oversized corner lot measuring 37×125, it has hardwood floors throughout the first floor and crown molding.

There is a marble fireplace in the living room.

It has the preferred layout of all three bedrooms being on the second floor.

The listing also says that there is a bathroom on each floor but it looks to have 1 full bath and 2 half baths.

There’s a family room in the finished basement.

The house has central air and a 2-car garage.

The market isn’t just hot in the GreenZone. Other homes are under contract in Galewood.

Will this latest price reduction make this house competitive in the Galewood market?

Christine Todde at Century 21 Grande Realty has the listing. See the pictures here.

  1. Seems like a very nice SF house for the money, attractive and well-maintained, but most buyers will want an updated kitchen and two full baths. Since the baths aren’t pictured here, it’s hard to tell if either of the half baths could easily be converted to a full bath, and most buyers probably want a second bath on the second floor.

I have only been through Galewood once or twice. It seemed like an extremely nice area, but very out-of-the way.

It is just north of Oak Park (literally just across North Avenue.) This house is just a few blocks from Oak Park.

Galewood is served by two Metra stations as well.

  3. How much are rising mortgage rates affecting the sale of houses like this one? (i.e.- considered middle class housing.) When this house came on the market in May, rates were near record lows. Now they’re closer to 5%. It’s a big difference.

  4. I still like this home since it reminds me of the houses where I grew up. The lack of a second full bath may be the issue. My friend just turned a half bath into a full bath for about $25k. That was with moving walls, the washer/dryer closet, and adding a new closet.

The price still seems very reasonable. Although, is this neighborhood safe? What’s the reason this house is so cheap compared to far northwest side neighborhoods?

  5. I saw this house last week. It’s a beautiful corner house on a nice block. Aside from the decorating which is very ornate, it was limiting due to only one full bath. There was very little closet space in the master, often the problem in this age of home, I suppose. There is no room to expand the half-bath on the main level. The kitchen is old, but spotless and the basement made me nostalgic.

  6. Any updates on this house? Is anyone on here interested in this house? The price seems high compared to other properties in the area.
