10 Months Later, “The Fugitive” House Is Still Available: 336 W. Wisconsin in Lincoln Park

This 5-bedroom modern construction single family home at 336 W. Wisconsin in Lincoln Park burst onto the market in June of 2011 to much publicity because part of the movie The Fugitive, with Harrison Ford, was filmed in it.

10 months later, it is still available and has been reduced $251,000 in that time.

Built in 1981 on a larger than average Chicago lot of 32×126, it has a lot of features you don’t normally find in single family homes including a sauna, an elevator and an indoor pool.

It also has a 3 car garage.

The kitchen has white cabinets and a stainless steel refrigerator.

There are 3 master suites.

Does being a movie location help, or hurt, to sell a property?

The other homes that were in movies that were recently on the market haven’t sold yet either. Those include the Home Alone house in Glencoe and the Ferris Bueller modern home in Highland Park.

Margaret Wilczek at Prudential Rubloff has the listing. See the pictures here.

336 W. Wisconsin: 5 bedrooms, 5 baths, 6129 square feet, 3 car garage

  • Sold sometime before 1994 (?)
  • Originally listed in June 2011 for $3.95 million
  • Reduced
  • Currently listed at $3.699 million
  • Taxes of $48,845
  • Central Air
  • Sauna
  • Elevator
  • Indoor pool
  • Bedroom #1: 15×19 (third floor)
  • Bedroom #2: 12×22 (second floor)
  • Bedroom #3: 13×16 (second floor)
  • Bedroom #4: 13×14 (second floor)
  • Bedroom #5: 14×18 (fourth floor)
  • Family room: 17×20 (main floor)

  1. Wow. Showcase property.
This is a whole lotta house – functionally works, but style-wise needs updating.

I wonder how well the pool is separated from the rest of the property in terms of smell, humidity, et. al.

  2. This is pretty incredible space. I’d go in and redo the kitchen and masterbath and take the pool out, if possilbe. Needs some other updating as well. 2.9 to 3.2?

  3. According to Baird Warner web-site “search feature” this morning, there are 1950 single-family houses for sale that are presently listed for $1 million or higher within their MLS draw area. Demographically speaking, there are far more high-end SF houses for sale in metropolitan Chicago area than there are qualified buyers presently seeking a 7-figure house.

This house’s tax bill is a killer too.

  8. I’ve had a number of foreclosure files languishing on my shelf; one client hasn’t paid on his $300,000 home since 2008; and this file, along with 3 or 4 other inactive files, have recently popped back up on my radar. It’s not only new filings but old inactive filings are getting some attention again.

I’ve followed a handful of foreclosures and out of curiosity, I drove past a new foreclosure listing; it was a homepath ‘lipstick on a pig’ type of property. 1950’s home with a 1970’s kitchen; new industrial carpet; original windows, old HVAC; and two large puddles in the backyard very very close to the basement windows….but it was a foreclosure and it was ‘cheap’ ($250kish) so it went under contract in two weeks. The homepath across the street is still languishing; it’s got a slab basement, little yard, small, old kitchen, original windows, etc. No deal there, no deal at any price would cram me into 1000 sq feet of crappy space ever again.

Sabrina needs to stop showcasing modern houses with ultra hideous artwork. We need some regular houses so Ze and Miu can get back to spewing negative comments and make a Stepford Wives reference, rip on Chad/Trixie, Big Ten grads, etc. I guess making fun of Chad and Trixie is more acceptable to homedoofus than making fun of Josh and Rachel. He’s well trained.

  11. somehow never realized how awesome this place is.

problem is i’d drive my wife crazy constantly reenacting that movie…example:

me (posing as Dr. Kimble standing by pool, holding water gun): I DID NOT KILL MY WIFE!

me (posing as Tommy Lee Jones’ character): I DON”T CAAARE!

me (as Dr. Kimble): *crouches down, drops water gun, swan dives into pool*

    =)

p.s. this won’t get much cheaper.

  12. Time for some facts:

    26,690 listings in chicago
    7280 (>27%) are under contract

reading this site, you would think that the housing market is dead in the water. obviously, the facts disprove that……..

  13. Under contract doesn’t mean that sale of the property is completed.

“problem is i’d drive my wife crazy constantly reenacting that movie…example:”

I was thinking the same thing. One of the all time great films. Only difference is I was thinking a projector over the stairwell playing the scene of the wife getting killed, over and over again. Every time she annoys me, just turn on the projector. I would also need a prosthetic leg, by the door, where the Umbrella holder would normally be.

    “He’s well trained.”

We own the media… give in.. we are your masters..little do you know that when you are listening to Nicki Minaj you are really subconsciously being forced to learn the words to Hava Nagila. The little dancing baby from Ally McBeal already taught you how to do the dance. These are long term plans!

  15. Some updating and this house would be gorgeous. I’d love to keep the pool, but also wonder about the smell, humidity. I would probably look into a retractable roof over it. Because hey, if I have 3 plus million to spend what’s a few more bucks.

  16. Awesome house except for those damn dirty diagonal floors!

And it certainly needs a little updating, some rooms look stuck in the 90’s, not that there’s anything wrong with that, the 90’s were fucking awesome, but still

Would love to go to work on a house like this if it were my own, will someone give me 10 mil or so? hah

  17. Huge, cool place, in a great location, with a 3 car garage and bedrooms that could accommodate at least 2 well-to-do kids all the way to college (the kids’ bedrooms in many multi-mm $ SFHs seem to fall short on that front). The pool should go for sure, replaced with some additional interior space and a covered/heated/semi-outdoor space. Given the pool issue and any other updating, I’d agree with Iizla ballpark it at $3 mm, give or take $100k. What’s that’s all done, it’s a $4 mm place.

  22. It will always hold some extra value due to the movie and bragging rights. Most rich (and many not so rich) people love to brag about their stuff. Someone will scoop up MJ’s Mansion in Highland Park JUST for that reason. They will want to tell everyone that they picked up Jordan’s old home at a STEAL. I’m damn sure that the person who owns his first Chicago home on Windy Hill Lane tells everyone that will listen that they own MJ’s old home. Bet that they have become experts at working that into a story.

Still I do like this home and could live here with some minor updates. I think that I would still prefer the place with the rooftop Basketball court and indoor pool on Ravenswood or Kleiner’s pad in West Town.

BTW – Does anyone know what is happening to the “Castle on the Kennedy?” Seems like that was for sale or sold some time ago but it does not look like anything has happened since on the property.

  30. Some of these brick modernist pads, we’ve seen two recently, could use some vines on the exterior to give them more life (unless there is some sort of taboo of mixing greenery/nature with modernism). Works at Wrigley!

  31. That one bedroom shown from the stairway across the hall has absolutely no privacy! You can even look around the corner from that viewpoint and see the bathtub. Maybe it was set up this way for reasons of cinematography.

The art collection is impressive, but maybe distracts from the possibility that the individual viewer could live there.

  32. I think this seems like a cool house and I love the movie but I am starting to think that every multi-million dollar house has open bedrooms. Does being rich mean you don’t care about privacy? I believe bedrooms are private and should have 4 full walls. Perhaps in a cheap loft you can get away with having an open bedroom, but if I am paying this sort of money the only open rooms should be public ones.

  33. As a footnote to nothing, when my son graduated USC we were invited to a party for the film school graduates that was held at Dean Goodhill’s house in the Hollywood Hills. Goodhill was one of the academy award nominated editors for the Fugitive. It was a nicely restored, but small, mid-century modern home.

Not mine either, but when folks are paying $441k for 2 bed condos above retail and directly on (far west) Armitage, something tells me that you might be willing to pay $350k for this place. (Sorry, I had to work that one (the 2 bed) in some how.)

Your certittude just reduced my maximum bid. I am now only willing to pay $275k, and only if the seller include three new cars to park in the garage, along with the contents of the house. Having to deal with the noteriety of the house, what to do with that art I don’t particularly care for, the open “bedroom” and the upskirt catwalk is simply too much to pay a penny over $250k, which is my new maximum having listed out my major issues with this place and realizing how insurmountable they are for another over $200k..

  58. Zillow gets ripped on here by some people, but it’s a pretty good indicator because it applies a price psf. As long as the property is consistent with the rest of the submarket it’s in, like the HA house is in East Winnetka, then it works. If a property is over or under improved then Zillow can be off.

No pool smell at all in the main house. This house is straight out of 1988, it needs a lot of updating. It had an addition added to the top of the house in the past 15+ years ago. Lastly, this place is HUGE.
No one is living in the house, it was a doc that owned it and he moved to NY. Kids were raised in this house, that pool must have been really awesome growing up.

I’m on fucking vacation JMM! Yeah- I haven’t been reading the local newspapers to see if suddenly- after 10 months on the market and a nearly $1 million price reduction- the Home Alone house FINALLY sold. Good for them. They finally got realistic about the pricing because $2.4 million was a JOKE. (obviously.)

Oh- by the way- anyone know if they made ANY money owning it since 1983? I’d be curious to know. None of the media reports have a price of what they bought it for. It’s 14 rooms and FAMOUS. Must have a premium- right? WRONG.

So- that’s true of all these other FAMOUS houses in the Chicago area. No one cares that Ferris Bueller was filmed there 25 years ago (or whatever it was.) It’s a joke when they market it like that. But hey- it gets them “publicity.”

But what good does that do? Didn’t seem to help this Home Alone house one bit. In fact, it probably hurt it as all the media follow-ups were simply titled, “Home Alone houses reduces” or “Ferris Bueller house still can’t sell after 2 years.” Is that “good” publicity for a property? To be in all the national papers like that? (as the Home Alone house was featured in the WSJ real estate blog as well.)

Same with the Fugitive house that was just featured. All the publicity isn’t getting that sold.

The Home Alone price WAS interesting though. That’s much lower than I would think that size house would go for in that area. The North Shore continues to see the correction. It sold 33% under the original ask.

The pool needs to go, and that space will need to be properly (i.e., bearing in mind that an indoor pool’s been sitting there all this time) redone, all of which will take some doing. But after that, it’s a pretty unique, awesome place that could comfortably serve as home base for a two-kid well-to-do family for 20-30 years.
