A 6-Bedroom Original Lakeview Farmhouse on an Oversized Lot: 633 W. Melrose
This 6-bedroom farmhouse at 633 W. Melrose in East Lakeview came on the market in July 2020.
Built in 1876, the listing says it’s one of Lakeview’s original farmhouses.
It’s on an oversized 35 x 157 lot and has a rare 3-car garage.
The house has 3 fireplaces, built-ins in the living room and detailed millwork.
It has a gourmet kitchen with custom cabinetry, Caesarstone countertops, a Shaw’s farmhouse sink, and a unique rehabbed solid oak island.
The kitchen also has a walk-in pantry and reclaimed wood beams.
4 of the 6 bedrooms are on the second floor along with 2 bathrooms, including one Jack-n-Jill bathroom.
The primary suite is on the top floor and has cathedral ceilings and skylights.
The listing says it has a luxurious new spa-like primary bath.
The primary suite also has 3 walk-in-closets, an atrium/sun room, an office with built-in bookcases, an exercise room and a private 13×14 balcony.
The 6th bedroom is in the lower level, along with a full bath and a recreation room.
The listing says the rear yard was redesigned and landscaped in 2017.
The house has central air and the listing says it’s in the Nettlehorst school district.
This property is located in the middle of the shops and restaurants of East Lakeview.
Listed at $2.299 million, it has been reduced to $2.175 million.
This house seems to have it all. Is it a good suburb substitute?
Megan Tirpak at @Properties has the listing. See the pictures and floor plan here.

They should remove the wall paper in the DR – it’s a love/hate thing and most will hate(unless you’re a huge VanHalen fan)
Kitchen is aesthetically a mess, it’s like a bad Johanna Gaines designed it.
Backyard is going to be heavily shaded in the afternoon
Mudroom & MBath are excellent and property overall is very nice.
Possibly the proximity to schools/churches/broadway/halsted holding it back
I love it. Agree on the kitchen, though. I would have done all the cabinetry the same as the island (to match the beams).
6 months ago, I would have said this only makes sense if you have AT LEAST 3 kids, but now — 2 kids’ rooms + 2 home offices + guest room + lots of space for distance learning = great choice for smaller families. (Well, wealthy smaller families)
Probably owned by a rich gay family with kids and will attract the same (or who want the school that’s right in there).
The buyer better be extra wealthy so the ongoing costs of maintaining a home like this don’t make them feel queasy.
$3k+ per month for property taxes. Ouch.
You would really have to love living/want to live in the city.
I’d much rather take a place like this. Lower taxes and price. Walk to the lake, restaurants

Beautiful. They’ll need to re-sod where the pool is.

The current owner appeals every year.
Current assessed market value = $809,310.
Won’t be able to maintain that fiction if you buy it for nearly $2m.

Speaking of…this one is still available:

This house is beautiful. The windows are great. I love the kitchen and the dining room wallpaper. I have a grey and wood kitchen, and I was going to put that Kelly Wearstler paper in my house. However, my wallpaper hanger said that paper is not the easiest to hang, so I went with the Harlequin paper that is similar. I like the linked Evanston house even more.
Charming house on a nice block. Might be asking too much, but it’s not completely out of reality considering all the positive attributes.
@anon – I forgot about that house. As I’m paging through the pics, I’m thinking some bold paint colors that I probably wouldn’t have picked. 17, wallpaper that I wouldn’t have picked, but not as bad as this place. More bold paint colors. WTH is anon complaining about? and then, 21/22/25, OMG MY EYES.

Evanston isn’t Chicago. You’re not walking to Wrigley Field from there. Or the Lincoln Park Zoo. Etc. Etc.
Two different buyers.
For only $2.2 million dollars & $38,000/year in property taxes you too can be a prisoner in your house during certain hours.

It is if you want to get mugged on the street after hours.

Dude, 1985 called and they want their paranoia back. When’s the last time you left Naperville and came “downtown”*? L.O.L.

7 years of ownership, no appreciation less realator fees, lost money if you include the landscaping
