A Blast From the 1970s Past in the Water Tower: 180 E. Pearson in the Gold Coast

This 60th floor 2-bedroom in the Water Tower Place at 180 E. Pearson in the Gold Coast has been on the market since October 2012.

Normally, I scold that the décor doesn’t matter because it won’t be there when you move in, but if you’re into the authentic 1970s vibe, then this unit is a must see.

Water Tower Place was built in 1975 so this could possibly be an original unit.

The 2754 square feet unit is on the southwest corner and has lake and city views.

Those are parquet floors in the living/dining room.

There’s also a wet bar.

The listing says you can “create the home of your dreams.”

Since October, it has been reduced $300,000 to $1.199 million.

What will someone be willing to pay for this square footage in order to renovate this unit?

And are those chandeliers collector’s items?

Linda Marcus at Koenig & Strey has the listing. See the pictures here.

  1. Kitchen cabinets don’t look to be nearly 40 years old. Would love a bathroom pic. Some of that track lighting is more ’86 than ’75, no? listing would benefit greatly from floorplan.

  2. Low ceilings, leased parking and super high assessments. Who is buying into this building and for what reason?

  5. This is the best corner of the building to be on besides SE, and the views are great. I prefer this side to the north side facing right into the Hancock building.

That said, the place needs some new interior decorating, unless you want to live in what looks like a 1970’s porn film set.

Great place.. My favorite spot in Chicago… I’d definitely look at this place if I were in the market in Chicago.

I see nothing ‘broken’ with the unit, so why waste money upgrading? I don’t get the obsession of breaking down perfectly working things? Often when I see fullu upgraded units, I wish they just things as they were. Walls were built for a reason, when you start tearing them down you change the feel for the place..

  8. This is a nice place! I really think that it will find a new owner soon at a price just under $1m.

Love the views. Would dig living on North Michigan. Would have to redo just about everything. Each time I open up a picture, I hear that Blaxploitation/Porn-like wucka-chicka wucka-chicka wucka-chicka guitar riff….

To me high-rises need to have balcony. Does it at least have functional windows? All the recycled air is not good.
