A Hollywood Movie Producer Used to Sleep Here: 1414 N. Wells Sells
This 2-bedroom condo at 1414 N. Wells in Old Town had been on the market since September 2008.
See our prior chatter and see the pictures here.
The unit had been entirely gutted and specialized with upper end finishes.
The listing said it was owned by a Hollywood movie producer and Johnny Depp had frequented the property.
It finally found a buyer.
The unit is now the most expensive to ever sell in the building.
Unit #502: 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, 2500 square feet
- Sold in July 1996 for $391,000
- Sold in September 2003 for $790,000

- Sold in July 2009 for $1.125 million

- Sudler Sotheby’s had the listing.
From Vincent Scott’s (listing agent) property description
“Marion Cotillard rented while shooting a movie,Johnny Depp(friend)also frequented the home.”
this is why real estate is more like art collecting…..I think that this person is crazy for spending so much for a condo on a nice-but-not-1.2MM-nice block, but to each their own.
congrats whoever you are.
This hm blows, good luck w the kitchen.
Further proof that money can’t buy taste… dreck!
Did this close?
And why buy Johnny Depp’s temporary house when you can buy Kirk Hinrich’s house that he lives in!

“Sold in July 2009 for $1.125 million”
the recorder’s office only has info through 7/10 so i asked if it closed hoping for an answer of when. people say they sold their house all the time when in fact it is just under K not closed. Selling a home is one thing, transfering title is the other.
Curious, What is the time lapse between the closed day and when it’s posted on the recorders website?
“spending so much for a condo on a nice-but-not-1.2MM-nice block”
I don’t have a problem with 1.2mm on the block; my issue is with 1.125 in the *building*. They crazy over-improved for such an average building. If $391k wasn’t the most expensive unit at construction, it was v., v. close. Most of the units in the building were low-200s in 95/6 when it was built.
I feel sorry for whoever has to sleep here from now on.
I’m a big old town booster, but this seems absurd.
I’ve never like this building. Seems like it should be in Atlanta, not Chicago. It takes up half a block of street level space with no commercial space. I don’t think condo buildings should be allowed to do that. The place across the street has a falafel joint, a frame shop, and a lingerie store. It’s not as fancy and it’s kind of weird, but it’s stuff like that that makes a neighborhood interesting. The 1414 building kind of kills the block.
usually a couple of weeks until it hits the recorder’s site.

I like the building but the unit is average. Unless Johnny Depp and that hollywood producer will be picking up the tab for the monthly nut, why would a realtor put that in a listing?
Just talked to Johnny – he didn’t really like the place and is pretty pissed about his name being used to sell this place…
“It takes up half a block of street level space with no commercial space.”
Isn’t there a dry cleaners or a tailor shop or something? A single commercial space, no?
The *twin* curbcuts are another annoyance. It would have been a much better project w/o the townhouses behind it.
I have a friend who lived in the building for many years and only sold because he was transferred. He and his wife loved the building. According to him, he thought it was very well contructed compared to other units in the area and was extremely quiet (i.e., could not hear his neighbors). For me, if you’re going to live in a condo, that is my number one issue, particularly noise from above or below. You can throw up an extra layer or two of drywal to deal with side to side noise, but not a whole lot you can do for the vertical noise after the fact.
Johnny Depp dropped a 5lb monster growler in the toilet???? OMG… grab my checkbook!
heheeheh “Johnny Depp dropped a 5lb monster growler in the toilet???? OMG… grab my checkbook!” and it was an unflushable too!
nice size square ft for a two bed and it has two car parking. I still for that price and hood would look more into a SFH. But thats me.
This doesnt seem like an ‘in-town’ due to its location or views.
maybe a person who travels a lot and loved “benny and Joon” bought this.
hey great selling point for future sale on this place, i bet you can pay richard grieco $5,000 to come visit this place, then when you sell it in 2013 the listing can say the cast of 21 jump street, except Holly robbinson, frequented this home.
