A Unique 2-Bedroom Loft in the Grand Ohio for $545,000: 211 E. Ohio in Streeterville

This 2-bedroom loft in the Grand Ohio at 211 E. Ohio in Streeterville came on the market in February 2024.

The Grand Ohio was built in 1984 as apartments. It’s a full amenity building with 595 units, an indoor pool, a basketball court, tennis courts and an exercise room along with a parking garage.

It was converted into condos in 1999.

Most of the units don’t have washer/dryer in the unit, although there is a unique loft floor on the 5th floor that has them in the unit. That floor also has its own separate elevator bank, higher ceilings and outdoor space.

This unit is on the 5th floor.

It has hardwood floors in the living areas and carpet in the bedrooms.

The kitchen is open to the living and dining room.

There’s a gas fireplace in the living room.

The kitchen has wood cabinets, black appliances, an island with seating for 2 with the stove embedded in it.

The second bedroom doesn’t have any windows as it’s interior.

The primary bedroom has an en suite bathroom and a walk-in-closet along with windows.

The loft also has a large 27×7 terrace off the living room and primary bedroom.

It has the features that buyers look for including central air, washer/dryer in the unit and garage parking is included.

This building is in the heart of Streeterville, near shops and restaurants and Whole Foods. It’s also near the Mag Mile and various bus routes.

Listed at $545,000, that’s $288,000 above the 2015 purchase price of $257,000.

Will the seller get the premium in this low inventory market?

James Kinney at Baird & Warner has the listing. See the pictures and floor plan here.

  2. LOL, just LOL

Original 1999 finishes, I though buyers wanted new?

    Closer to 1000sf

Column strategically placed to break up any flow

    No pics of the MBr?

Picture of flowers is an interesting approach

Looks like a fair number of the units are still for rent

Congrats to the sellers if they can find a rube to buy this at anywhere near ask

  3. “No pics of the MBr?”

    #15. Not enough for you?

I’m a little dubious that the terrace and old appliances are worth $190k compared to this:

Could it have been a typo? Even $445k seems nuts, but a lot less nuts.

Depends if 2420’s wall units have sophisticated chips or not

  6. I find this building so unpleasant/depressing…looking at the broke ass tennis court from my balcony was the worst. I looked at one unit here when I was looking and couldn’t get out of there fast enough.

Columns in the middle of your living space make it a loft? Or the windowless bedroom with 3/4 high walls?

I feel sorry for anyone buying this anywhere near that ask.

  7. Wow, I can’t find a single redeeming quality. Even the lap pool looks worn out.

Curious, what’s the appeal of living in Streeterville these days? Is it mostly medical professionals living in this area? For high rise folks, seems you can do a lot better in River North or on LSD in terms of value and views.

  8. Know people who still live there but haven’t inquired in ages

Yes to old ass wall units

Yes to lots of younger people in scrubs going in and out so people doing their residency

Yes to the roof tennis never being usable from the day the development was handed over from the developer

I would not be interested in this particular unit with a terrace given the traffic but I’m ok with some units like a studio as a city pad

What traffic? This isn’t a major street at this location, is it?

There are restaurants with outdoor seating right on the street there.

    You also get in-unit w/d.

I didn’t realize there isn’t a rental cap in the building.

my bad. My brain tilted toward 5th floor 5th floor and I kept thinking of those units on the south side of the building which get a lot more traffic coming from Navy Pier headed towards I-94

actually slight digression I wonder what will happen to those south side 5th floor facing units and if they will lose sunlight from some 535 n. st. clair building – I haven’t kept up as much

  14. I have never seen a listing with these types of photos

I don’t know if its an upload screwup or deliberate editing to wash out the color

  15. Besides my other reservations about this one, I have a built-in distrust of units where the listing photos show the shades all drawn. What are they hiding?

  16. Agree about this part of Streeterville not being particularly great. One thing you have to deal with is the constant noise of sirens because you’re so close to NU. A relative just spent time in the hospital there and the room had windows. The sirens were nearly constant.

I know the alderman made a stink a few years ago about siren noise but it doesn’t seem to have improved.
