A Victorian Row House with a 1-Bedroom Coach House: 58 E. Elm in the Gold Coast

This 5-bedroom Victorian row house at 58 E. Elm in the Gold Coast came on the market in October 2020.

Built in 1883, the row house is on a smaller than standard Chicago lot measuring 16 x 103.

It has a unique rear coach house with an oversized 1-car garage.

The house has some of its vintage features including 10′ ceilings, a center stairway with skylights, hardwood floors, crown molding and 4 working fireplaces.

The main floor has the living room, separate dining room and an eat-in kitchen which has white cabinets, quartz counter tops, a subway tile backsplash, and Subzero, Bosch and Wolf stainless steel appliances.

The kitchen also has a unique glass conservatory that overlooks the back landscaped gardens and coach house.

The baths have been remodeled and feature tile and fixtures by Ann Sacks and Waterworks along with custom vanities and Kohler tubs.

In the main house, two bedrooms are on the second floor, along with 2 baths, and two bedrooms, including the primary, are on the third floor.

The primary is en suite with a walk-in-closet.

The lower level has a family room with  a wet bar, a second kitchen with white cabinets, a full bath and laundry room.

The lower level also has separate entrances.

There are front and rear English gardens with terracotta terraces.

The listing says there is new electrical and copper plumbing upgrades.

The coach house has 1-bedroom with a full bath and a sitting room.

I can’t tell from the listing if either the house or the coach house has central air.

This house is on a tree-lined street near Oak Street Beach and all the shops and restaurants of the Gold Coast and Mag Mile.

Originally listed in October 2020 for $2,395,000, it has been reduced $100,000 to $2,295,000.

Is this an ideal property for someone to work from home or have an artist studio in that coach house?

Sarah Taich and Jame Taich at Baird & Warner have the listing. See the pictures and floor plan here.

  1. The deign is well done especially dealing with the lack of width. That being said the original/current ask is insane. At >$2mm, there’s better options

“The kitchen also has a unique glass conservatory that overlooks the back landscaped gardens and coach house.”

Only a shill could type this with a straight face

  2. Sold 5 times between 2001 and 2010…what’s up with that? This isn’t exactly a starter home.

  3. “what’s up with that?”

Nov-04 was a deed to a relo company, June-05 was from the relo to a real buyer.

June-05 buyer appears to have moved down from North Shore, and sold to move into a brand new condo (for much less $$).

May-07 buyer paid cash(!!), and is from a prominent foreign family.

So, we have one person who probably wouldn’t have sold when they did, one who realized they bought too much house, and one who exemplifies here that “the rich are different”. And the current owners who have lived there a decade, which is normal.

  4. I love the glass conservatory. It must bring in a lot of light to what could otherwise be a very dark space. Calling it a “landscaped garden” is an overstatement.

The couch house should have a better kitchenette.

I like it better than yesterday’s house, but how much of that is photography and furniture?

  5. Who said the Fed couldn’t print economic prosperity by inflating the cost of housing to its fastest YoY increase in 30+ years?

“Housing price growth set a record for the second consecutive month in May…. The National Composite Index marked its twelfth consecutive month of accelerating prices with a 16.6% gain from year-ago levels, up from 14.8% in April…. The market’s strength continues to be broadly-based: all 20 cities rose, and all 20 gained more in the 12 months ended in May than they had gained in the 12 months ended in April. Prices in 18 of our 20 cities now stand at all-time highs, as do the National Composite and both the 10- and 20-City indices. ‘A month ago, I described April’s performance as “truly extraordinary,” and this month I find myself running out of superlatives. The 16.6% gain is the highest reading in more than 30 years of S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller data.'”

Can you guess the name of one of the two cities NOT at its all-time high?

Let’s just say one of them is a certain midwestern town whose name starts with a “C”, ends with an “O” and in the middle has a “hicag”.

The bar has wine storage but no place for bottles or even much glassware it looks like.

Once again, JohnnyU with absolutely nothing constructive to say about a property.

Yet he’s wrong every time about market time and price.

    Lol.

  8. I say the design is well done with the width constrains and that’s negative?

Guess somebody opened a second box of wine today

House has been on the market for 57 days and has $100k haircut, looks like the market agrees with me.

Same comment as WP. I guess neither of you can come up with anything original and have to resort to this tired old trope that is used to attack women when you have nothing else to say.
