Another Chance to Get that Greenhouse in the Sky: 550 N. Kingsbury in River North
This 3-bedroom duplex penthouse loft in the River Bank Lofts at 550 N. Kingsbury in River North came on the market in June 2018.
The River Bank Lofts was an authentic loft conversion with walls of exposed brick and timber ceilings.
The main floor has a library, the kitchen, dining and living rooms along with 2 of the three bedrooms.
The second floor has a family room with a mini-kitchen with what looks like wine refrigerators as well as a skylight, and the third bedroom.
The kitchen appears to have white cabinets, granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances.
This loft also has some unique features including a massive storage/crafts room across the hall from the unit and two outdoor spaces, including a patio and a living room balcony that overlooks the River.
But the most unique part of the loft appears to be the sizable greenhouse. It looks like there is electricity and possibly space pak heating/cooling (as you can see it attached to the wall.)
It has central air, washer/dryer in the unit and one car garage parking is included.
It has been 21 years since this loft last sold.
This is a rare chance to get a unique property on the hot Chicago River.
Listed at $1.195 million, will it get it’s price?
James Kinney at Baird & Warner has the listing. See the pictures here.

Not a fan of the location, but I love this place. And the fact that I do despite the busyness of the decor means that it only has that much more potential to me.
I’m a type A minimalist; the photos sent me into a tailspin of anxiety due to the amount of clutter. The views looked nice from the “green house” room, but I could not get a grip on flow or floor plan. It was just too visually disruptive. There is no way I would pay this price with a kitchen that looked claustrophobic.
I love this place, particularly the wet bar on the upper level. Very bold choice on the fireplace moldings. If you pull out all of the vintage furniture you may be able to inject a more midcentury modern look without drastically changing a lot of other elements but it definitely has its charm as is. It’s hard to get a gauge on how much space there is because it’s so busy; removing a few pieces of furniture and decor could’ve gone a long way in staging this.
Location is awesome if you love River North night life and like to mingle and play tennis with the big cats at the EBC, but the biggest flaw of this building is that it’s so close to that damn ohio feeder ramp. Every asshole with a motorcycle/motorbike or likes to play fast & furious after 9pm on that ramp and this unit would not be immune to that noise. I would have difficulty concentrating in my greenhouse with those constant interruptions.
I used to live in this building. Loved the location as you were close enough to what RN has to offer but yet far enough away from the tourists and congestion. Never really had any issues with the noise from the off ramp but then again, it was rare we had the windows open. Very well run building and units are typically in high demand.
The decor in this particular unit totally ruins the space for me. Way too cluttered and busy. There’s already so much visually going on with all the brick and timber that by added so much more it makes my eyes hurt.
Love this place…two fireplaces, 3 bedrooms, outdoor space, and a “green house” (really a sunroom…) a constant stream of Harley riders would not stress me out there..I would just walk over to my wetbar..and have a glass in front of my roaring fire.
God love whomever lived here as is has to be all their taste…(whats with the bird house hanging from the ceiling..) but they didn’t screw with anything that the new homeowner would have to change…(no weird colors or victorian wallpaper..)
Cool place. I am not sure about the price but I could definitely live here. I would insist on a showing during rush hour and another later at night to test Elliot’s “Fast and Furious” analogy. I suspect it isn’t really an issue given how long the current occupants have been here.
Love the finishes – – agree that mid-century modern furniture (my preference), would look great in here. I would actually ask if the little birdhouse thing could stay. Very quirky yet comfortable.
Rooms seem smaller than they probably are due to the furnishings and style. I’d want to see it in person to really check out sizes. And the location is not for me, but it’s definitely a cool place and I do love the view, the outdoor space, and the sunroom.
so much clutter this place givin me a panic attack!
Someone needs to de-clutter this place and take new photographs. I can’t get past the decor.
I don’t like facing west and the huge fixture over the bed with a sharp point at the end that could stab you in your sleep if it fell is very bad Feng shui energy. Really bad. I’d wonder about the assessment too. For that space it’s not that bad but it seems light on amenities. I hope they have an estate sale when they move.
