Beauty of a Bygone Era: 1 Bedroom in The Mews for $300K: 1368 E. 57th Street in Hyde Park
This 1-bedroom in The Mews at 1368 E. 57th in Hyde Park came on the market in August 2025.
The Mews is a famous condo building in Hyde Park. Built in 1914 by Prairie architect Robert Spencer, it has 24 units.
There’s no parking or other amenities. There is a laundry room in the building.
This unit has had a “recent renovation” but still has its original woodwork, including wood carvings and wood beams.
The hardwood floors have been refinished.
It has rehabbed windows.
There is a living/dining room combo with a wall of south facing vintage windows and built-ins. It has a decorative fireplace (although other listings in the building say it is wood burning.)
Sip coffee or wine on the small balcony off the living room, a rare feature for a vintage building.
The kitchen is “new” with white cabinets to the ceilings, stainless steel appliances including a dishwasher, a white subway tile backsplash and white counter tops.
The bathroom has been remodeled. There’s now a walk-in-shower instead of a tub and a floating white vanity.
It has the features buyers look for including central air and washer/dryer has been added to the unit in the bathroom. It appears, from the prior listing pictures, that they removed the tub to fit in the stackable washer/dryer.
There is no parking.
This unit also has a sunroom off the bedroom, with 3 walls of windows.
The listing says this unit is one block from restaurants including Medici bakery and restaurant as well as the University of Chicago campus. There are buses and Metra train lines nearby.
Listed at $300,000, that’s $110,000 above the 2021 sales price of $190,000.
Buyers love new and they love The Mews.
Will there be a bidding war for this property?

CC has now featured all three of the units with the 1368 E. 57th address, and none of the other 21 units in the Mews. Which is surely just coincidence, but notable anyway.
Very nice upgrades to the kitchen and bath. Still hate that range.
“CC has now featured all three of the units with the 1368 E. 57th address, and none of the other 21 units in the Mews. Which is surely just coincidence, but notable anyway.”
Huh?
I feature what has come on the market. There are several doors to the building which means it has a bunch of addresses. There’s another 1-bedroom that has just come on the market in the building that isn’t nearly as interesting as this one.
Please find something else to complain about.
“Huh?”
It’s not a complaint at all (that’s some odd PTSD or LLM hallucination).
You even quoted it:
“Which is surely just coincidence, but notable anyway.”
It’s notable that these are the units that turn over, or the units that are interesting or just as a…coincidence. Maybe it says something about the complex, and maybe it doesn’t.
Like if in a high rise every unit featured was on the same floor. Just mildly interesting.
Four units for sale right now – not a good sign (of course, a lot of academics are probably cutting back, cutting their losses or moving back to country of origin right now).

Hyde Park inventory is extremely low. I don’t think it’s “academics are probably cutting back.” Also, many of these units don’t see much turnover.

Could combine for a sprawling corner unit!
“Could combine for a sprawling corner unit!”
Why not? Could be cool.
