That particular block of Uptown suuuuucks. Close to the train tracks, as well as being surrounded by Section 8 and homeless/drug rehab shelters.
Alright, I’m curious. Where do you keep the firewood for your two wood-burning fireplaces?
When I was growing up, we used about half a cord of wood every winter and it was only cost effective if you ordered a full cord (occasionally you could get half a cord cheap enough). We would of course stack it up along the fence in the back yard.
But here in the city, with no yard? It’s going to get awfully expensive buying a few pieces at a time. And I doubt the fire codes look too kindly at a big stack of firewood indoors.
seems like a poor use of the square footage. The fireplace between the living and dining seems to cut the space in half leaving nothing but a huge hall way. Same thing upstairs, the office and family room seem not very cohesive. With the master on a seperate floor this layour is very inconvinient for anyone with same children.
I’ve spent a lot of time in that unit. It’s tastefully upgraded and well cared for. Lots of space and nice natural light. The master bedroom is on the upper floor and the two bedrooms on the lower, which is nice for privacy.
Re: neighbrohood: My wife had a cinderblock thrown through the window of her car while parked out front. I would agree that the neighborhood sucks, but I’m not a fan of Uptown in general. The location is great for walking to live shows though.

I love that sundeck, but, as it has been said, this neighborhood SUCKS. What a shame.
I think the neighborhood has gotten better over the last 10 years.

That neighborhood is only getting worse. The Wilson Yards project is just a couple blocks away and that will create a ton of lower income residents. Not the projects, but they are not going to help drive values up.

Uptown’s not nearly as busy as it used to be, and the condo looks nice, but there’s spacious (though, admittedly, few quite as large as this one) places in better neighborhoods for that kind of money.

What nook? It’s a 14×10 deck and they have a specialized stand out there to keep the wood off the decking. And the fireplaces do have gas.

2006 price should be nowhere near the 2009 price!
Anything close to Wilson & Broadway is the pits. The neighborhood looks and feels very slummy, replete with thousands of Section 8 units and social services. There have been a number of shootings in the vicinity in the past year.
Don’t be taken by the hype. This neighborhood is NOT Lakeview and will never be. There’s too much post industrial ugliness and too much subsidized low-income housing, and that stuff isn’t going away anytime soon.
Yeah I went and looked at a few places in Uptown when i was looking at places… all the Realtards there are all hyping that Shiller is gone in 2 years, Wilson Yard is going to up the value of your property (lol) and its going to become the next lincoln park…

I never buy the “oh but its going to gentrify” or “gentrification is coming” arguments. As you’ll find with these arguments they’re based entirely on baseless speculation. You can’t predict future gentrification with any degree of accuracy so you should make your neighborhood choice based on what the neighborhood looks like today.
Did you see that new housing starts fell to an ‘unexpectedly’ record-low pace? Gentrification is dead for the near to medium term in most neighborhoods. What you see is what you get – and given today’s economy, you can only expect things to get worse before they get better.

What is funny about that survey is that every single economist out of the 64 questioned expected housing starts to be higher than where they came in at. These Wall St. economists seem to have eternal rose colored glasses in assessing the depth of this downturn. Its good in that it gives me renewed justification for my short positions.

As it turns out, that neighborhood is indeed a section 8 pit.

Look at the last picture, now imagine where a cord of wood would go. Most people I know are more than happy to sacrifice 20%+ of the deck taken up by fire wood.
The stands will only slow the rate of rot, the area under the stand will be damp. If the deck material is polywood, it would be ok but moldy.

That’s the front deck, genius. They store the wood on the rear deck, which is not really a “hanging out” type deck.

Changing a $25 burner element is a lot easier than plumbing a new gas line. 8-|
Wow, I’m tired about all the slamming of Uptown. This area actually has a strong sense of community – there’s a new community garden being built down the street and people living in the community and from local organizations are working together on it. Uptown will never be Lake View, and thank goodness. Yeah, there are pockets here and there throughout and some Section 8, but Section 8 doesn’t mean gangbangers. It’s changed tremendously over the years, and there’s so much nightlife/restaurants around the corner, only getting stronger. The lake and LSD are super close by. Wilson Yard isn’t the dream we all were hoping for, but it’s not a worthless cause. They’re building the new Target now, which I’m sure most reading here would frequent. I’ve lived in the area for over 10 years and have never had my car vandalized or anything bad happen to me.
If you run out of firewood, bet you could find a dead body or two in the alley to burn.
Different strokes for different folks, I suppose? I spent some time in this neighborhood when I was a loyola student, a few blocks north. It has an edgy vibe to it. I’ll give it that much credit.
One of my fonder memories of uptown was when a woman wearing an Al Gore hat on approached me asking, “do you the time?” To which I answered, “Sure, it’s 3:30(pm, mind you)” To which she replied, suggestively, hips shaking, “No, I mean do you have the time ::pause:: for a lady?” It was pretty awesome. And no, I didn’t. So much for political discourse.

No, I’ve never voted for Shiller while I’ve lived here. I was a volunteer for the opposition in the last election, I attend CAPS meeting and I support Fix Wilson Yard. Just because I like Uptown, and won’t diss every Section 8 in this ward, doesn’t mean I voted for Shiller.

I’d rather walk around any violent neighborhood than here. I’d rather take my chances not getting shot than be around a bunch of crazies. I hate this area. I was considering moving here and luckily came to my senses after checking out a couple places.

Reminds me of one of my many Uptown story’s. Do they still have that institution at Argyle & Sheridan? I remember getting a ride with a friend and stopping at a light a Lawrence when a very hot young woman in a gown opens the door, jumps in my lap, and puts her arm around me. I saw the medical bracelet on her wrist and the look of pure crazy in her eyes. Was kinda a pain to get her out of the car.

That reminds me of the time me and my wife got some pho noodles and decided to walk home going down broadway… Some dude right next to us just randomly started beating the crap out of this guy and he was screaming “Vice lords n****!” We quickly ran away because we didn’t know if he had a gun or not and of course we didn’t exactly want to catch any stray bullets or stray beatings.
Ahhh uptown… so glad I came to my senses and decided NOT to move there.
I wonder if the gangs are still as numerous as when I lived out there? I would think the higher ownership rates and proximity to the lake and Wrigley would have pushed a lot of that out by now.
I have lots of ugly gang stories from Uptown. Hope things have improved.
