Chic 2-Bedroom Penthouse with Skylights for $550,000 in East Lakeview: 737 W. Aldine
This 2-bedroom penthouse at 737 W. Aldine in East Lakeview came on the market in February 2023. I don’t have a picture of this building but I feared if I didn’t crib on it immediately, it would probably be under contract by next week so we’ll look at flowers instead.
Built in 1993, 737 W. Aldine has 11 units and attached garage parking. I can’t find any reference to an elevator in any listings for the building so I’m assuming it has stairs.
This top floor unit has soaring ceilings with fully operable skylights with shade and large French doors.
The listing says the wood floors are newly refinished.
The living room, dining room and kitchen are open concept. There’s a fireplace in the living room.
The kitchen has custom wood cabinets with some open shelving, statement stone countertops and backsplash, a large eat-in island with butcher block and a wine cooler.
The primary suite has a huge walk-in-closet and a primary bath that was renovated in 2018 which has heated floors and towel bar, a soaking tub, separate shower and dual vanity.
The unit has “covetable” storage including a walk-in laundry room and additional storage in the attic.
It has a Lutron lighting system, electric blinds and a tankless on-demand hot water heater.
The unit has outdoor space with a deck off the back of the unit with a retractable awning and watering system.
The building also has a common roofdeck and shared garden.
It has central air, washer/dryer in the unit and attached garage parking is included in the price.
This building is near the shops and restaurants of East Lakeview and near several bus lines and the Belmont el stop.
Listed in February 2023 at $550,000, it this a deal for the penthouse life?

“it this a deal for the penthouse life?”
Is this a Larry Flynt reference I’m not getting?
Nice place. Not sure how much Arts and Crafts is favored today, think it could be pretty cool if they leaned into it a little more
“statement stone counters and backsplash” – Unfortunately its not a good statement. Backsplash is especially jarring IMO
There’s a lot of dead space the way they laid out the kitchen, Would have been nice to size it to have the DR table off the kitchen and use the current RR as a reading/work nook. Right now its just dead space in a condo that could use more common space
Must love wood.
“Is this a Larry Flynt reference I’m not getting?”
“Must love wood.”
I love the kitchen. So different and unique. I also really like the counter tops. Also so unique. It could be really cool if the unit were painted something dark and moody.
I would have liked a bigger island but you could swap it out with one.
And the back deck is a surprise. It’s bigger than I would have thought and actually usable.
I like seeing properties come on line which haven’t been on the market in a generation. Always indicates to me that someone really just liked living there.
Mar-00 price + CPI = $625k.
“the back deck is a surprise.”
It’s nice that the access isn’t through the primary bedroom.
Alas, it is through the second bedroom.
Nice space; basically a 1+den.
Aesthetics aside, this is a building with 30-year old split block construction on all but the facade. I wonder how that is holding up.
Also, the last picture shows a common rooftop deck over this unit’s bedrooms (accessed by climbing the stairs connected to this unit’s deck, I believe. That’s not ideal.
Imagine telling your date that you bought a “penthouse” and then seeing the look on their face when they discover its actually a 4th floor walk-up. I’m in good shape and even I’m a tad winded after climbing 4 flights.
Anyone else bothered by the 3-4 different shades of wood in the main living space?
“I’m in good shape and even I’m a tad winded after climbing 4 flights.”
Imagine the shape you’d be in if you did 4 flights every day Nyet.
“Nice space; basically a 1+den.”
On what planet is it a 1 bed plus den? Because you say so anon(tfo)? Because there is a door that goes to a deck from the second bedroom so that makes it a den suddenly?
This has a nice layout for a building that was constructed in the early 1990s.
I remember this being built in the early 90’s. I lived a couple blocks away. Considering the phony-looking exterior, I was surprised how much I liked the interior. Nice outdoor space, too. The kitchen is in the LR and the TV is above the FP, but that’s par for the course. Not bad for a cheaply built 90’s building.

Earth
Imagine if you will a nice Friday night, 60 degrees. You put little Chad/Meghan down for bed. You and your significant other decide, hey it’s a nice nice, let’s grab a beverage or 13, some tunes, a snack and sit outside and enjoy the gorgeous night. Oh that’s right you can’t access the deck because Jr is sleeping. I get this isn’t your experience for a myriad of reasons, but most couples enjoy some one on one time and being outside
Access thru the MBR sucks but it allows parents to at least use it, access thru a 2nd Br really sucks (assuming one has kids) and also brings up a host of other issues
Shills gonna shill tho…
Aside from the unnecessary last line, I tend to agree with Johnny above that access to the deck could be an issue for couples living here with babies. Being, however, that our babies have grown up, not an issue for my wife and me if we had such a place. Still, poor planning on architect’s part. Anyone moving here and planning to use bedroom two for a baby or toddler will have to take that into account.
Contingent
Wow. Thanks for the update David.
This is why I cribbed on it before the weekend. I knew it wouldn’t last. A penthouse like this with parking is rare on the market right now. There is NO inventory and there is a lot to like about this property.
Sizzle.
“I get this isn’t your experience for a myriad of reasons, but most couples enjoy some one on one time and being outside”
You honestly think a young couple who is expecting on having children is going to choose a top floor walk-up???
Yeah- this is where our experiences ARE very different JohnnyU.
Come on. Do better.
“You honestly think a young couple who is expecting on having children is going to choose a top floor walk-up???”
I stated that it would suck for anyone with kids
As for who, who knows. Suprises happen, and as you are wont to say, inventory is tight
So you are agreeing that this is a home for a childless individual/couple rendering it a 1Br + Den?
“Yeah- this is where our experiences ARE very different JohnnyU.”
That they are, I get that no one likes to spend any time with you, but that isnt the norm for most couples.
Come on. Sober up and do better
@Johnny, I think you are over estimating how much forethought people put into future plans…. People buy these types of places all the time and then have kids a year or two later and wind up needing to move. All one has to do is look at the high percentage of cribs in second bedrooms in condo listings.
A top floor walk up is definitely not ideal, but most folks don’t think that far ahead or realize how much of an issue it will be.
Do better JohnnyU. Try and be less of a jerk and a bully at least half of the time, instead of being one all of the time.
