Do you know where “SoLo” is?

I’ve seen this designation several times now in real estate listings.

The neighborhood is dubbed “SoLo”.  Do you know where it is?  I had to think about it for a minute.

Apparently, that is the new real estate moniker for “south loop.”  Clever, huh?  SoLo…South Loop.

This Keller Williams agent is using it for a loft at 1516 S. Wabash on Craigslist.

If nothing else, it certainly got my attention.

There are 7 units for sale and 1 for rent in the building.  The unit in the Craigslist ad is the cheapest unit available in the building

Unit #308W: 1 bedroom, 1 bath

  • Currently listed for $180,000
  • Parking is available

Maybe it’s just me, but has anyone ever seen a wall of glass block like that in a condo unit before?   I’m not sure if there are other windows.

  1. ugg, I remember wincing back in 2000 when some agents were trying to call the Printers’ Row area SoLo.

This is not New York….aaargh! Even there, the neighborhood portmanteaus jumped the shark when some genius came up with NoLita, Noho and Dumbo in 1998.

Bring back “Near North Side” for River North! I like my neighborhood names old school.

  2. Yup. Take at look at 680 N Lake Shore Dr. Several units have done something like this, because the apartments are so deep. It means that while the bedroom doesn’t have a window, it has pretty nice light. http://www.rubloff.com/search/details.html?ulb=true&id=06571827

Also see how this truly beautiful unit (I’ve been in it–it is spectacular) made essentially a third bedroom by putting up a wall of frosted glass facing the room with the window. Look at the image of the children’s bedroom. http://www.rubloff.com/search/details.html?ulb=true&id=06602613

    I love this building.

  3. I walked around this unit a while back. The reason for the glass block is it along the EL tracks there. Actually right at their level!

  6. Not very original…It’s a play on how san francisco refers to south of market street as SONO.

  7. b3: Actually, San Francisco refers to the South of Market area as SOMA- but there are so many different letter combinations for neighborhoods in the big cities these days, it’s hard to keep up.

I’m doubting that “SoLo” is going to go very far in Chicago.

  8. yep, I made a typo— SOMO is san francisco, thanks. SONO is the development south of north avenue in chicago.

I hope SoLo doesn’t go far!

  9. I think these abbreviations become more prevalent in direct relation to the number of newcomers to a city.

By the way, I don’t know how long SF has ‘had’ a SoMa, but I would guess that it too is an unoriginal adaptation of SoHo in New York.

  10. Does anyone know how long SoMa has been called SoMa in SF? It’s at least 10 years (as it was called that in 1998 by everyone when I visited a friend in the neighborhood that year.)

It takes some time for the neighborhood names to catch on.
