That price is crazy for being so far from the lake. You could get a Gold Coast mansion for less. The exterior is also awful. If you want a house that looks like it was meant for the suburbs, move to the suburbs.
Exterior looks very chintzy and cheap to me. No context either. If I had this kind of money to spend on a home I would buy something else.
Yeah – – TV over the fancy fireplace. It doesn’t really bother me. It actually makes sense in this house because the exterior of this home doesn’t really engender visions of nobility for me….but I think that is what they were going for.
I just can’t fathom why someone would want such a big fancy house, like… ok you need space for your kids… buy a crappy house because its going to get wrecked… ok you don’t need space for your kids… why the fuck do you need almost 6000 sqft?

The wine cellar wouldn’t be so bad if it didn’t have the chair. It makes me think the owner is too unhappy to even be able to take his/her wine upstairs to drown his/her sorrows in a more appealing atmosphere.

Not that I agree but the Gold Coast has lost much of its allure relative to Old Town / LP and even LV. Prices in GC are usually cheaper than OT/LP. I think its because buyers want new properties rather than restored older ones and while GC is close to downtown its not really as walkable as OT/LP/LV with regards to restaurants / bars.

Most people can control their kids and keep them from destroying a home. Hence the playroom in the photos. Once you have kids you don’t automatically get a minivan and stained jeans.
All that being said this place is overpriced. Not a nice part of LP but it is a big house with a lot of room. I think 2-2.2mm is right area.

While I certainly agree with the TV over the fireplace as a sin, it’s more venial than mortal IMHO.
In the main room they simply lack another appropriate wall to put the TV in front of…you’re not going to block a window are you?
In the playroom it’s more of practicality; you don’t want little kids putting their dirty fingers on the screen or pushing buttons (as I now deal with).

Actually, i would disagree. Old Town still serves as the buffer area between Cabrini & Gold Coast. Pricing in Old Town is still significantly cheaper than Gold Coast. East Lincoln Park (closer to the lake) is now on par with GC due to new construction mansions. But I think you still can’t beat the cachet of Gold Coast. For the working millionaires, its still walking distance to the Loop (20-25 minutes), or a quick 10-15 minute Uber ride. Plus lots of restaurants, bars, and michigan ave. shopping. For my millions, I’d rather buy in GC.

You let your kids watch TV? My friends with kids don’t even have TVs anymore because they don’t want their kids watching it. They sometimes get to watch Youtube, but that’s it. Parents are crazy these days.

We limit their watching to less than 6 hours a week, usually just as a de facto baby sitter when we really need to work on something like our knife throwing act.

My kids just in front of the tv and watch all sort of garbage, from wild kratts to sophia the first to river monsters and beyond. This is the golden age of television and I don’t want my children to miss even a second of it.
My friends are always educating their kids about something and always tending to them any time the kids need anything. It’s a little over the top. I wonder if they ever just want a break. The kids are very well behaved and can carry on interesting conversations, but I can’t imagine being that type of parent myself.
Well, I guess HD’s kids aren’t spouting the same sing song rhymes hour after hour…

This location in LP just off Clybourn isn’t all that walkable to restaurants either. Other than Pequods, there isn’t much in this area. Even the Panera closed.

That is twice the price! The lot on the Howe property is a bit bigger but the GC place is a legit mansion. It looks like it might need a new kitchen but its not a gut job and has original details (which most think is a benefit but seems like its becoming a hind. GC just doesn’t have the cache it used to.
I was having trouble comparing cheaper properties as a lot of the GC places didn’t have on site parking which makes it tough to compare.

Michigan ave is mostly tourists. Same with viagra triangle and division street. The trendy restaurants are in RN / West Town / Logan Sqr. Don’t get me wrong – GC is a really nice area and I like it. But it doesn’t have the same cache it used to as other areas are becoming more desirable.
I think its difficult to compare a brand new construction mansion vs. a vintage mansion. Different buyer pools. I guess best comparison would be a new GC mansion vs. the Howe mansion. Here is a somewhat similarly new mansion in the GC.

One of my best friends grew up on that block. That house is not new construction. Stupid realtor-speak. If you kept the exterior walls and gutted it, say it’s a gut job.
Also, if you are going to put in his and her toilets, then I want to see the placement of said toilets in the pictures.
