Get a 2-Bedroom Duplex Up in This Former House of Worship: 1021 W. Barry in Lakeview
This 2-bedroom duplex up in the converted church at 1021 W. Barry in Lakeview has been on the market for 11 months.
In that time, it has been reduced $139,100.
Unlike some of the converted church units we’ve chattered about over the years, this church unit actually has some of its original church features intact including large, arched windows.
There are 22-foot ceilings in the main living space and exposed brick.
The listing calls the kitchen a “chef’s kitchen”. It has stainless steel appliances and quartz counter tops.
While there is central air and 2 car garage parking, the unit also has a euro-style washer/dryer combo in the kitchen (which you can partially see in one of the pictures of the kitchen.)
The bedrooms are also split with one on the main level and one on the second level. One of the notes left by the Redfin agent on the property says that there are no windows in the main floor bedroom.
The unit is now listed $70,100 under the 2008 purchase price at $349,900.
Is this a deal for 1500 square feet in this neighborhood?
Guy LeMenec at Coldwell Banker has the listing. See the pictures here.
Or you can see it in person at the Open House on Sunday, February 19: 1:00 to 2:30 PM.

Oh, gurl.
I’m going to make sure I go to mass regularly from now on. I don’t know if I can take any more of these church-to-residential conversions.
Those bathrooms are a mess. It’s also too bad that main bedroom doesn’t have a window.
I can’t tell what I dislike more – the pictures or the place itself.
We looked at this place in the fall of 08. We actually really liked the open kitchen/dining room with the brick wall and French(ish) doors, and high ceilings were great. But it had enough going against it that is was just a no go for our purposes. It’s not very attractive for those with or expecting a kid. That said, the low $300k’s seems like a pretty good deal. I hope the sellers aren’t in dire straights.
* And even if the sellers are, in fact, the sultans of swing, I hope they’ve got the funds to move into their next home without this sale wreaking financial havoc.
” I hope they’ve got the funds to move into their next home without this sale wreaking financial havoc”
They’ll just have to deliver a few more custom kitchens to make up the gap.
I believe that before this became condos, the building was the home of the MoMing dance studio in the 1980s.
That ’05/$370 to ’08/$420, damn. If it had been marketed in the pre-Lehman spring, where would it have gone?
These church condos are all big bummers… always seems like you should be able to make the building into interesting residences but they never, ever, work out. The rose window unit at 1658 Superior made for a spectacular living room, but these all seem to involve major quality of live compromises.
Unlike boiztown, I like church conversions these two are just odd. Yesterday’s was bland and this one has a glass walled bedroom. The sellers were ridiculous for listing at $489k with those bathrooms and glass walled second bedroom. Now the price seems more in line with the need for updating. Unfortunately, it really seems more like a 1++ bedroom place though than a true 2 bedroom,
don’t like
1) tiny bedrooms
2) a single combo washer/dryer in the kitchen
3) tile bathroom countertops
4) duplex up stairs that are in the middle of the living room
do like
1) location of property
2) price per sqft (that includes 2 CAR! garaged parking)

100% the best post of the day if not week!!!! LOL
For about double the price you could have this unit in the same Church.

The developer trend of cutting an old building, aka big box, into as many small irregular boxes and then trying to make those little boxes into functioning condos is not playing out as well today as it did 5+ years ago. I think that now days people are finally buying based on a more logical floor plan, good layout, and the ease of making updates to fit into a current design style.
I suspect that part of that change is the luxury of time. Back in that era I recall realtors explaining that “if you did not sign a contract today there was a strong likely hood that someone else would steal it away from you tomorrow.” Now when a realtor tries for a pressure close like that I think that he/she is laughed out of the room.
I recall loving that north end unit at Skybridge and kept going back for another visit. The unit had great light, a logical design, and excellent layout. I can see why people bout there but I just felt that it was way to high of a price for the unit. Thank goodness that I passed on that one.
sorry I hit post comment too early meant to finish my comment with the folllowing.
….” Thank goodness that I passed on that one”…. I assume that this is what happened with these two church units. People bought on emotion regardless of the high price or unusual layout.
what an interesting space! It must be fun to bring the bathrooms and the kitchen to life and then enjoy the high ceilings and all.
Like annony, I saw this in ’08. IIRC, the master has a sliding window to the living room. it’s the piece of frosted glass with a floral pattern visible in picture 2 and you can see it open in picture 14. It was a very odd layout.

Ha! Thanks, Groove. ?
