Get a 2-Bedroom Loop Penthouse for Under $500,000: 6 E. Monroe
This 2-bedroom penthouse duplex in the Mentor Building at 6 E. Monroe in the Loop recently came on the market.
The Mentor Building was converted into condos in 2002-2003 and has 39 units but no parking.
It’s across the street from the Palmer House Hotel.
The living spaces along with the kitchen are on the main level.
The kitchen has granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances.
The listing says the windows have custom Hunter Douglas shades.
The two bedrooms are on the second floor and are accessible via a spiral staircase.
The master bedroom has skylights, a walk-in closet and a private bath.
The second bedroom also has its own bathroom.
There’s a separate storage closet on the first floor.
It has the features buyers look for including central air and washer/dryer in the unit, but there’s no parking with the building. You can rent it in the neighborhood.
But does it have its own private rooftop deck? Or is that deck public to the building? It’s unclear from the listing.
This penthouse was originally listed for $499,900 in January 2017 before being withdrawn last summer.
It has come back on the market reduced $80,000 to $419,900.
Is this now a deal for someone looking for a duplex?
Kelly Clute at Keller Williams Preferred Realty has the listing. See the pictures here.

By no means perfect, and would benefit from updating, but good potential for the money if you don’t care about parking. It seems like it’s been on and off the market a lot, might be some building issues. Assessments and taxes seem a bit high.
I will never live east of Lasalle Street in River North or the Loop. With the red and blue lines running right by this place, along with the dozen or so bus routes, State Street attracts all of the panhandlers, crazies, violent savages, and protests that clog up the street on a monthly basis. Don’t forget, that east of Lasalle is when the full on blitz of tourists walking six wide on the sidewalk cluelessly starts as well.
Looks like corporate housing for a middle manager/consultant.
The spiral stairs will get old really quick
The spiral stairs will get old really quick
But the listing says it’s “chic”!
* Chic, Spiral Staircase Leads to Upper Floor *
Spiral staircases always remind me of an apartment I had in college. I thought it was the height of sophistication when I was 19.
ew no
Those tiny windows are really depressing. This block is too chaotic for my taste.
JAN TERRI IS HAVING GARY COLEMAN DREAMS OF SLIDING DOWN THE STAIRCASE TO HUG MRS. GARRETT!!!! LOLZ!
GO USA!!!!! IT’S OLD STYLE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful building but the unit seems so anonymous and forgettable. Having no parking just makes it even less desirable. Imagine trying to sell it and explain that there’s parking “nearby.” I’m guessing the roof deck is shared. I don’t like how some of the rooms only have those high narrow windows, though I guess that could help with privacy. Generally, this looks like a place to rent, not to own.
I wouldn’t even rent this place. The spiral is ridiculous. And the ongoing comments about no parking are really too much. This place isn’t in Naperville. You live here because you don’t have a car. You bus, train, cab, Uber, walk to everything. You get things delivered in 20 minutes or less.
