Holiday Schedule for Memorial Day Weekend
Given that most of you are getting the heck out of town and/or barbecuing and going to parades all weekend, there will only be two posts today.
Additionally, because I’m going out of town and won’t be back until late on Monday and will subsequently be watching the Blackhawks on Monday night (go Hawks!)- there will likely only be limited postings on Tuesday. Look for one post on Tuesday (or maybe two- but we’ll see.)
The real estate market seems slow to me right now (anyone else notice the same thing?) It usually slows down over holiday weekends but even the past week or two has seemed slower than normal for this time of year.
Maybe that’s a result of demand pulling forward due to the housing credit. We shall see when we get new monthly numbers in a few weeks.
In the meantime, enjoy the weekend. And thank you to all the men and women who served our country and whom we honor this weekend.
They’ll be plenty of time to chatter on housing next week.

For me personally things died right after the expiration of the tax credit. However, the data suggested that contract volume was only off around 25%. But now it’s picking back up again for me.

Precisely why Gary I believe the CS data will be anomalous or rise over the next three months.
The rush for the free money will distort the market and we won’t get a picture of the unsubsidized market until September’s CS (which shows July’s prices).
Thank you Sabrina for remembering our men and women of the United States Armed Forces. Without their sacrifices, we would not have anything close to the luxury of this venue or any others, through which we are able to engage in discussion and offer opinion, regardless of the subject.
Our men are buried in countries thoughout the world. While some of us may not agree with the reason(s) for engaging in a particular conflict, it is our uniformed men and women who are the first and usually the only, with boots on the ground. Their work is not limited to conflict roles. How often have we seen pictures and video of these incredible individuals delivering aid where aid is needed?
I am proud to be able to say that 10 family members are buried at Arlington National. Today and every day I honor them and any other individual who has served or are now serving.
Thank you all for your service and sacrifice.

I keep checking Tribune.com for the article but it hasn’t shown up. I’d like to read it but haven’t picked up a paper version of the Tribune in years. If it doesn’t show up soon perhaps someone can scan it and upload it to Google docs or they can send it to me and I’ll upload it somewhere.

Its a short article [front page, home section] about ‘real-estate porn’. A couple of cc quotes. to me it was written in the style of a gossip column, anyways nice publicity.
The real estate market is as slow as posts on Memorial Day. In the neighborhood I watch I’ve seen 2 SFH contracts in 5 weeks. One for an average priced SFH and one for a million dollar home in a ‘short sale’.
“Sales of new homes, juiced by the tax credit deadline, leaped almost 15 percent in April to a two-year high. Existing home sales jumped 7.6 percent in April and almost 23 percent in the year.
But applications to buy homes plummeted by nearly a third to 13-year lows after tax credits of up to $8,000 ended on April 30, proving that the incentive pulled sales forward, the Mortgage Bankers Association found.”

The key is the mortgage applications. 13 year low when rates are nearly at historic lows. Even cheap money isn’t able to get people off the sidelines.
How long until we start to hear cries for another tax credit?
