Is Helmet Jahn’s 600 N. Fairbanks Still One of the Hottest Buildings in Streeterville?
This 2-bedroom in 600 N. Fairbanks in Streeterville just came on the market.
Designed by Helmet Jahn, it was built in 2007 and has 210 units and a parking garage.
The building has won architecture awards and it sold out quickly despite being finished during the housing bust.
This unit has south and west views with 10 foot concrete ceilings.
One of the selling points about this building was that the units weren’t “finished.” Most have gray concrete ceilings and walls.
This unit has floor to ceiling windows.
The units had upgraded standard finishes when constructed. This property has marble and glass bathrooms.
The kitchen has Italian cabinets and luxury stainless steel appliances.
It has central air, washer/dryer in the unit and parking is $50,000 extra.
This building used to be one of the hottest in Streeterville. Does it still have the buzz?
Kimberly Becker at @Properties has the listing. See the pictures here.
Unit #1307: 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, 1185 square feet
- Sold in November 2007 for $498,000 according to Redfin (included the parking)

- Taxes of $8315
- Bedroom #1: 13×13
- Bedroom #2: 12×14
While its a corner unit (nice) – it seems so cramped still even though they removed every last bit of extra furniture out of there
I always like the modern / sparse interiors of these units. However, this place is tiny. You can’t even put a legit dining room table in the living area.
I never understood the appeal of this building.
After having moved to NYC, while i can’t appreciate the prices, i do appreciate that listings have actually good photos, and readable floorplans. So many Chicago realtors are lazy, they cant even bother to post a picture of the master bath and post 2 of the second bathroom?
The exposed concrete makes it look like you are living in a concrete parking lot. These units are not going to age well, once this concrete box fad is over.
1185 sq ft LOL. Concrete special!
The interior is nice enough, but gosh is that an ugly building.
^Ha, Love the exterior, the interior is just too depressing with all the concrete.
Can that possibly be the smallest double vanity.
Jan Terri’s stabbin cabin
Love the building but this unit has a poor layout which makes it feel cramped. If this was on a better corner (Fairbanks is too congested right here) I would love to live in this building. The 1BRs have a great layout with dual-entrance bathrooms that reduce the need for a full on powder room.
That bedroom looks like a high-end prison.
“this unit has a poor layout”
The diagonal hallway–while clever in concept–really takes up too much space.
Contingent on day 4.
I owned in this building and am considering moving back. This unit featured isn’t my favorite layout, but there are some fantastic floor plans in the building. I wish there was more storage existing in all the units. Most owners add storage. Also, I had a southern view, which is great, but if you have a western view it gets quite warm.
It seems this building was ahead of its time with the exposed concrete being that several luxury rentals that recently broke ground have a similar aesthetic. Agree on the layout of the 07 tier – too much sqft eaten up by hallways and living/kitchen is tiny for a one bedroom let alone two…would make a great in town unit based on the location.
We’ll see if it closes for 700k (all-in) but under contract in four days – wow!
It’s the only 2/2 for sale in that building so it doesn’t surprise me that it’s already under contract.
This is the hottest market I’ve seen in a couple of years due to the low inventories and good weather.
Someone just sent me info about a property in Logan Square that has only been on the market 3 days and “final and best offers” are already due this Monday. If you want it- you’d better be overbidding, right? Who will “win” in that situation?
This is what I saw happen in the Bay Area. Buyers end up overpaying.
I also never understood the appeal of this building. It will age like the State of IL center.
PS Look at the hideous concrete bedroom pic, #3. Looks like a high-end torture chamber out of the Mockingjay movie or something similar.
HH, closer to home, that bedroom has the aesthetic of a CIA black site; I could only imagine it’s the same view Khalid saw as he heard Deicide’s F your God played at 11 for the 20,000th time….
Hey OT but I recently saw & loved ‘Hidden Figures’ movie. I saw it based solely on hh hating everything about it. Clearly anything hh hates on such a visceral level likely has merit right?
I highly recommend seeing ‘Hidden Figures’ if just to be reminded about how only 50+/- yrs a significant % of US pop thought it was consistent w American values to deny 11% of US citizenry equal opportunities & treated them as 2nd class citizens. I don’t know what the % of US pop is that yearns for a return to those “good old days” but hh, hd & DT remind me there’re still a lot of bass ackward belivers amongst us.
“Hey OT but I recently saw & loved ‘Hidden Figures’ movie.”
Me too southbound. It’s a good reminder that that part of American history wasn’t actually that long ago. And there’s still much to do.
“It will age like the State of IL center.”
Why is it any different from every other building? They are all built with concrete. It must be maintained.
I’d actually welcome the concrete walls in between the units. Many have drywall only. At least the concrete actually is some soundproofing.
Hidden Figures is “fake news”. I laugh at the extremism and anti-white bigotry of the Left. They’ll never tell you what Louis Till did and how he died, all the while pumping BS about poor Emmett Till, the son of Louis Till. Here’s your black history month from Wikipedia: ” A soldier during World War II, Louis Till was executed by the U.S. Army in 1945 after being found guilty of murder and rape.” The Tuskeegee Airmen were a mere pimple on the history of WW2. The Left acts like the Third Reich would’ve won the war with them. Lol.
http://www.vdare.com/articles/hidden-figures-myth-dissolves-it-wasnt-blacks-who-got-america-to-the-moon-they-actually-wanted-to-stop-it
meant: without them
Hidden Figures was made with the painfully-obvious agenda of delegitimizing the contributions of white scientists, physicists, engineers, mathematicians, project managers, aviation experts and rocket scientists. Instead, America’s greatest triumph evidently hinged on unknown black women manually calculating trajectories already confirmed by computers and a white man named Jack Crenshaw.
More of hh’s misdirection & nonsensical hateful crap. DT would be proud. Being of sound mind & having watched ‘Hidden Figures’ I can attest it does not ‘delegitimize the contributions of white…”. Imo it does point out how society benefits when each is allowed to earn & reach their potential, a lesson lost on some here who pine for the return of the ‘good old days’.
While it has nothing to do with ‘Hidden Figures’ I knew nothing about alleged sins of the father of the 14 year old child from Chicago brutally murdered 50 years ago for allegedly whistling at a white woman/ not knowing ‘his place’ as a black in Mississippi.
Someone who read the trial record of Louis Till wrote “.. At the trial of Louis and his co-defendant, each of the two rape victims admitted that “darkness, hoods, masks, shock, confusion made it impossible to identify the men who attacked them.” No victim could identify either man; nevertheless… Louis and his co-defendant were found guilty and sentenced to death “on the basis of being the wrong color in the wrong place at the wrong time.” Till was accused and convicted of a second crime that occurred that night — the murder of an Italian woman. One of the witnesses actually swore that the killer was white, but later changed his tune…”. Maybe he did it maybe he didn’t but it doesn’t justify actions of grown men who bashed in a kids skull to kill him without knowing anything about his father’s alleged crimes.
I’m certain this introduction of actual fact will soon make hh rational & I’ll soon read his post that he’s changed his mind – just like it happens when DT learns “the rest of the story”!
I can’t resist posting this to watch hd’s and hh’s heads explode: “Historians rank Obama as 12th best US president in new survey”
southbound, I don’t appreciate being called a racist. I guarantee you – and I’d bet the house on it – that I, on a daily basis, have far more meaningful interaction with minorities and immigrants that you have in an entire year. So to throw out your baseless accusations that I would like to go back to the ‘good ole’ days’ is quite offensive. Unlike you, whose only interaction with minorities is in the service industry, I actually perform services for minorities and immigrants and I do my absolute best for them regardless of their race, creed, national origin, or whatever. I bet you I know more muslims that you do too, and I’ve probably texted and spoke with more african americans last year than you have in an entire lifetime. and I’ve never once judged any of them for the color of their skin or harbored any racist thoughts. This has nothing to do with politics but the fact that you’re a jerk, a bully and and completely insensitive. You’re the bigot and self-centered jerk who slanders anyone who has ideas different than his own yet. THere’s a reason your party can’t win elections, and when you do, your side puts together a team of losers like the IL legislature or chicago city council.
“Instead, America’s greatest triumph evidently hinged on unknown black women manually calculating trajectories already confirmed by computers and a white man named Jack Crenshaw.”
HH clearly hasn’t seen the movie.
No- the space program wasn’t “America’s greatest triumph.” I would argue the invention of the Watson (also in the film) and America’s first adaption to computers ranks up there. (And, actually, if you see the movie and remember your history, you would know that America didn’t send the first man into space either. So how can that be our greatest “triumph”? We were behind in the space race.”)
That a woman figured out how to run that computer at NASA and how to utilize it before any man is just icing on the cake.
And actually, the film also depicted the very thing that everyone is arguing about now. All those women did the math calculations- by hand. Once Watson was utilized, they were all out of work. That’s how the American economy has operated since industrialization. Nothing is bringing back those jobs. And nothing is bringing back the jobs in the coal mines or sorting mail at the post office by hand or most of the manufacturing jobs that have either left to go where wages are cheaper or because of automation.
“More of hh’s misdirection & nonsensical hateful crap.”
Yes. More of the same.
The poor white man! When will he ever get his fair share?
Lol!
hd’s trollin’ agin’ & once again it read like somethin’ hh’d crap out and be right proud of. You’re an especially sensitive snowflake hd. I don’t know if you’re a racist & I didn’t call you one but I do believe you’re a reactionary who hopes the ‘good ole days’ return under our current ‘leader’. Be careful what you wish for hd – even McCain voiced concerns DT may be maneuvering to try pulling a Putin like move.
Re who knows/interacts w/ more minorities. I’ll repeat that unlike u & hh I grew up in & later raised our family (’til HS years) in integrated ‘hoods. 40+ yrs of meaningful & meaningless interactions. And as u know immigrants are now turning BG muslim – so what?
Finally imo you behaved just like hh, the true hate filled bigot & bully here when you tried tarring O w/the canard O’s life reflects his father’s alcoholism issues & asked if I knew O’s middle name was Hussein. I’ll bet you haven’t mentioned those tidbits to your minority & immigrant clients? And fwiw it’s your biz but imo your kids would be ashamed of the way u toady up to hh here. Just mho
By the way, the Tribune had an excellent article over the weekend about those who were laid off from the Oreo plant a year ago. For some laid off workers it has meant a chance to go for their dream.
It’s good the reporters are following up on what happened there.
Some interesting facts:
Number of manufacturing jobs in Chicago in the late 1940s: 670,000
Number of manufacturing jobs in Chicago in 2016: 70,000
Number of jobs at the Nabisco bakery at its peak: 4,000
Number of jobs at the Nabisco bakery in 2015: 1,250
Number of layoffs announced in 2015: 600
Number laid off: 429 (some took early retirement)
Number called back to work: 129
In 2016, number of workers in Illinois covered by the federal assistance program for retraining called “Trade Adjustment Assistance for Workers” if your job is moved out of the country: 4900
In 2015, number of workers in Illinois covered by the federal program: 3235

As i drifted to sleep last night I thought about two lines of dialogue from “Hidden Figures” which may be apropos here – I’ve found them in a review:
“..Despite what you may think,” says Vaughan’s boss, played by a chilly Kirsten Dunst, “I have nothing against y’all.” It’s the kind of thing many of us say when we want to avoid the taint of racism while enjoying everything it has to offer. Vaughan’s reply is the best line in the movie: “I know you probably believe that.”… “
For the love of God you guys. Don’t you get it that Helmethofer is trolling. He probably does not believe most of what he writes on this blog. On purpose he makes inflammatory comments and then the entire discussion centers around him and his controversial thoughts.
Stop feeding the troll.
Thanks for sharing the tripe dialog and fulfilling today’s quota of saccharin sanctimony, Southbound.
“Someone who read the trial record of Louis Till wrote…”
yeah, lol, show us just who this (((someone))) is. I’ll bet anyone here it’s going to be a bully and bigoted anti-white racist, you know the type. They like to revise history too.
On to more Fake News from the always-liar-Left:

Did they really think Katherine G. Johnson was the janitor there to empty the garbage can?
No. This story does not appear in Margot Lee Shetterly’s Hidden Figures book, on which the movie is based, and seems to be an element of fiction created by the filmmakers. It should be noted that the movie was actually based on just a 55-page proposal for the book, which might in part explain some of the movie’s deviations. The book was released on September 9, 2016, long after production on the movie had wrapped.
Is Jim Parson’s character, NASA engineer Paul Stafford, based on a real person?
No. In fact-checking the Hidden Figures movie, we learned that white collar statistician Paul Stafford, portrayed by Jim Parsons, is a fictional character. He was created to represent certain racist and sexist attitudes that existed during the 1950s. In the film, he thwarts every effort Katherine (Taraji P. Henson) makes to get ahead, including reducing her job qualifications to secretarial duty, omitting her byline on official reports, and telling her it’s not appropriate for women to attend space program briefings. By the end of the movie, Stafford’s fictional storyline includes the character having a change of heart, which is emphasized when he brings Katherine a cup of coffee.
Is Kirsten Dunst’s character, Vivian Mitchell, based on a real person?
No. Hard-nosed supervisor Vivian Mitchell (Kirsten Dunst) is a fictional character created to represent some of the unconscious bias and prejudice of the era. She is at best a composite of some of the supervisors who worked at NASA Langley.
In summary, Anti-white racist a-holes make up fictional white characters and make them look bad. Only a movie that cuck-southbound would enjoy. You are a sad specimen of a human male.
“He probably does not believe most of what he writes on this blog.”
Wrong. I most certainly believe the emphasis on the “tuskegee airmen” and “hidden figures” is nothing more than revisionist history crap from some of the most hateful people alive: The Left, and in particular, the Pedowood, CA left.
oh he believes the hateful sh-t he spews here – that’s why hh gets punched back at when he posts a lie filled hate filled diatribe
gotta love the irony that hh, the disciple of all that Breitbart news stands for (hh’s previously proclaimed his admiration of Milo Yiannopoulos “the incendiary writer who helped make Breitbart News a leading organ of the alt-right”) calls Hollywood ‘Pedowood’. did Milo resign b/c of ‘Fake News’? hh & other halsted st cowboys are puzzling over why anyone’s making a big deal about Milo’s taste in partners.
hh has a difficult time with concepts like sometimes movie-makers make movies. No one but hh requires all movies be 100% fact-checkable documentaries. Speaking of facts, only people who’ve actually watched ‘Hidden Figures’ are qualified to opine factually about how the white characters are portrayed. Unless Breitbart hired hh to review it
“For the love of God you guys. Don’t you get it that Helmethofer is trolling. He probably does not believe most of what he writes on this blog.”
Nimesh, no offense, but you haven’t been around this blog for a decade like many of us and know “HH” too well.
Of course he means it. He’s a bitter old guy who’s time, and generation, is passing.
Ha ha… at least we’ve buried the Leftist lies about Hidden Figures and the “tuskegee airmen”, so much so that cuck southbound won’t try and deny it.
Who cares about Milo? I never did. He was a homosexual pervert. The male reproductive organ was not meant to be used in the way sodomite nutjobs abuse it. They’re sick and disordered.
Trump won, Obama lost 1000 seats nationwide to the GOP. Lol, the Dems, who’s time is passing, are going to lose worse in 2018. Anyone who supports that failed, tired, old Durbin/Pelosi crap is living in the past and on the wrong side of history. Detroit is on the wrong side of history. Chicago is at a crossroads. It can choose to be on the right side, or the wrong side and die. People are leaving Chicago and IL because of the the failed old tired and loser mentalities of the southbounds of the world. People are fleeing southbound and the “vibrancy”. People can’t stand it.
Re: Milo. If you want to embrace homosexuals, you are going to embrace pederasty, drug abuse, disease and everything else that goes along with homosexualism.
southbound, you are so lost you’re beyond redemption. You’re a Catholic? Lol. BS. The Catholic abuse scandal was exactly what Milo was talking about: a homo pederast perv scandal, not “pedo”.
The media redefined the word during the Catholic priest scandal so they didn’t have to call it what it was: a homosexual scandal.
Not a “pedophilia scandal.”
There might be “pedophile priests,” but the scandal only ever involved “homosexual priests.”
All homos prey on teenage boys. There are no good homos.
They all belong in the bog.
“Chicago is at a crossroads. It can choose to be on the right side, or the wrong side and die. People are leaving Chicago and IL because of the the failed old tired and loser mentalities of the southbounds of the world. People are fleeing southbound and the “vibrancy”. People can’t stand it.”
Once again, this shows that HH does NOT live in Chicago (and probably never has.)
The city is booming. It has created over 50,000 jobs since the recession and that number continues to rise. More high rises are being built here than any other city (with Seattle a close second.) Not even New York is building like Chicago.
And it’s not just buildings. It’s parks and the new River Walk. The new River Line development is really going to open up the River for the South Loop. There could one day be a River Walk going all the way down to Chinatown.
And Detroit, by the way, is also booming. They are building a ton of restaurants, stores and hotels in the city now. The Great Recession devastation was probably one of the better things that ever happened there because it made them make tough choices. And it also brought in new blood which bought houses and started businesses. It’s a great thing.
I take great comfort in the fact that someone like HH doesn’t live in Chicago (and never has.) I feel sorry for whatever city he does live in though. Must be a sad place.
“The media redefined the word during the Catholic priest scandal so they didn’t have to call it what it was: a homosexual scandal.
Not a “pedophilia scandal.””
This is wrong actually. Many priests molested young girls as well. It certainly hasn’t been limited to only boys. And it wasn’t just priests. Plenty of nuns molesting boys and girls too but it hasn’t gotten as much publicity. The Church doesn’t exactly send out press releases about these things.
Go read some of the lawsuits. In every single parish. It’s been going on for hundreds of years- obviously.
Closed for $695,000 so yes, still hot
Wow – strong comp being that it’s the lowest/smallest 2 bedroom in the building and sold for 586/sqft in less than a week?!
Did you guys see 3901-04 in last week’s Crains condo of the week? Going for 1000psf, which I think would be a historical high if it can get a sale at 4.5m! Will be interesting to see what happens or whether owner decides to rent…
