With the recent hot weather, who doesn’t dream of lounging by the pool?
In Streeterville, there are several buildings (both apartments and condos) that have rooftop pools. 230 E. Ontario is one that has a outdoor pool and, from the pictures, a very nice workout room.
The building was built in 1969. The 1-bedroom units in the building range in size. Unit #1604 is one of the smaller one bedrooms. But if you want location, it can’t be beat.
Is this a good buy?

I think they were watching that new Lowes/Home Depot commercial for paints in your favorite teams colors. Obviously big dolphin fans who were smoking it up with Ricky Williams.
What I really like is all the built in cabinets in homes that really only work if you are still rocking a tube TV. Judging the size by the drink shaker, it looks like it could fit a 27″ widescreen, but hardly anything bigger. Also, judging from the RE site, doesn’t look like there’s any room for a W/D in this unit unless you want to give up the meager closet space.
They “staged” the countertop bar and put a bedspread over the inflatable mattress in the bedroom, but not change the wall colors. Paint is easy to change and is such a distraction, why would the owners not simply repaint first? Obviously they have moved out for the most part. “Newer paint”….. Is this a short sale or what is up?
Gotta love the martini shaker and glasses where the TV should go. Odd “staging”.

Yes paint is easy to change, until you actually have to paint. Those colors are so bright, you would def. need a primer coat, then prob. 2 coats of neutral colors. If you haven’t painted recently, I can tell you from experience helping my friends paint last week that it would take at least a week. maybe two.
at first i thought this was a steal until i realized that its only 675 sq ft. still, its at ~$310/sqft (+ 2 cans of paint), not all that bad!

The larger one bedrooms (around 900=925 sq ft) are often on the market and usually sell around 225-255K. They are great space for the price and often have the W/D already installed.
I kind of like it. old school high rise apts remind me of the Jeffersons. Plus you got ron of japan downstairs… blast from the past.

Maybe if you use the “one roll of paint, two sips of beer” approach. Yes, it would be best to do it over a couple days, but this place would take more time to tape than to paint–which is why you wouldn’t want to tape the edges. With two competent amatuers, it should me no more than about 12 hours total work (three coats, four hours each).
Boy after seeing that paint job I can’t help but think some art college called and wants their degree back. What a waste of tuition.
Agree on the cabinets: they are useless these days of $800 big flatscreen TVs. Then again after seeing this old building I can’t help but think that tube TVs seem to belong a lot more here than more modern futniture.
Jeez, some folks will do ANYTHING to live in Streeterville. This is one boring, meager, featureless little shoebox.
If it was only worth $148K in 2003, it could not conceivably be worth $209K now.

4 hours to paint all those walls? Including the kitchen which doesn’t look like it would be that easy with a roller and all the work to be done inside the entertainment unit? I bet it would take an hour alone to do all those details. Even with removable shelves. Also, you would def. have to tape that up.
Anyways my point is that it’s not “easy” to paint that. It’s easy to say but not necessarily easy to do.
I dont even see this one worth 125, its gross, in an ugly building, the rooftop pool looks like an exercise yard at a prison, and needless to say VERY SMALL.
I fail to see the appeal of an outdoor pool in Chicago. How many months a year is that pool even open? Three? And this summer has been very mild. I don’t find a swim very refreshing when it’s in the 70s…but I’m from the South. Maybe Midwesterners love to splash around in 60-degree water when it’s only 75 out, but if you’re holding out for swimming on days when it’s truly hot, I think you’re limited to about eight weeks in this town.

I’m pretty sure that the back of the unit only *looks* orange (b/c of the orange rrom) and is actually the same color as the rest of the wood. The only thing I see that would be tough is the strip above the cabinet. And, no, you don’t *need* to tape these rooms–they’re pretty easy. I’d stick with two people, four hours per coat and in any case it’s closer to right than “two weeks”.
Danny, your point is valid. But the natives are a little crazy once winter ends. Ever notice the number of folk wearing shorts when the temp hits 50 in the spring? Or people swimming in a 55 degree lake mich in june? Don’t know how many winters you’ve experienced here, give it a few more years and you might wish you had a pool for a dip in mid march.
Pools are generally usable for a wider time range than the beach. The beauty of heated, treated water.
As for the unit, it seems like a good affordable building for people who want to live in Streeterville, but asking for 41% appreciation since 2003 is just absurd. Trim down the 2007 bubble price and it’s within range.
Junior one bedroom = large studio apt.
I lived in the building and loved the location, the building was just ok. It always smelled in the lobby and first few floors like Ron Of Japan.( Im sure there were bug issues)
I dont know of many jr one bedrooms in that great of a location. There wasd only 12 -15 parking spaces indoors and it was tight.
But its still worth $160,000 to me
