Looking For A 4-Car Garage? This SFH At 2240 W. Barry In North Center Has It

This 4-bedroom single family home at 2240 W. Barry in North Center came on the market in April 2012.

It has a rare feature for a city home: 4 car parking.

Apparently, the garage is huge and can fit 4 cars (with two being tandem.)

The house was built in 1891 on a standard 25×125 lot so the garage probably doesn’t leave much of a backyard.

However, there is a deck off the back of the house.

There are hardwood floors throughout except in the lower level.

The kitchen has granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances.

The bathrooms are “stone.”

The finished lower level has a custom bar.

Two of the bedrooms are on the second level, the third on the main floor and the fourth in the lower level.

Originally listed for $25,000 over the 2005 purchase price, it has now been reduced to just under.

Will this house take a particular buyer (with a lot of cars)?

Or is it a townhouse substitute?

Anthony Madonia at @Properties has the listing. See the pictures here.

  1. Who wants a garage as big as the house? That’s not exactly city living. Then again, maybe this speaks to this location. Again, if I have to drive this much, I’d rather live in Wilmette.

  2. i would need a 25k discount to tear down the garage so i could get back the yard space.

  4. TO me, it looks like they got an “A” granite and cheaper cabinets to save money because … they wanted to kitchens (or just the extended wet bar in the basement).

I love the garage. I’m also a car guy. I’d build a huge rooftop deck. However, from the pics, the yard looks like a standard city yard, is the house not very deep?

  6. House is definitely short–but standard length for original cottages.

Nice access to vet care and 90 mile cuban cafe.

What actually happens wiuth Lathrop is the area’s wildcard.

Access with suk hard for 6 months when the Western viaduct is coming down (and, presumably, the Western river bridge is resurfaced, too). Possibly next year.

I think this place is decent. Nothing fancy, functional, good space… But have to agree that a 4-car garage is overkill – I’d rather have that space for the yard. Although the deck is fairly large. Overall, seems like a nice SFH with potential to still upgrade the finishes, if desired. Looks like the only public transit option is the Belmont bus east or long walk to Paulina – but clearly if you are interested in this place, you have at least two vehicles for the garage and drive everywhere anyway. Bonus that Hamlin is right down the street. Curious what year they rehabbed??

Pretty quick walk to Western and not a bad ride down to the Blue Line, too. If the BRT proposal for Western happens (kinda doubt it, at least in this part of the corridor) then it would be easy-peasy from Belmont, prob 3d stop (div, full, arm) to WestArm Blue.

  11. Is that a beer keg dispenser in the basement?

On the plus side with a four car garage, you could keep a lot of stuff in there besides one or two cars – including a tool shop, man cave, boat, large toys, etc.

It’s NorthCostCo Village. Or NorthCostCo Gate. Or NorthCostCo Village Gate.

Community Area-wise, it is certainly NorthCenter. I can’t abide south of Belmont being called RV. I think “Hamlin Park” is okay. If Lathrop is majorly, and successfully, redeveloped, it will end up being called whatever the developers call that.

  13. I would think the 4 car garage feature is a deal maker or breaker for the potential buyers. Why not put a picture of it in the listing? I’d be curious what the current owner uses it for. Then again maybe that’s why there are no pics, he might have a 55′ vette or something he doesn’t want made public.

  14. I think this seems like a pretty nice house. While I’d prefer a yard over the extra garage space it definitely would come in handy for storage especially since I think this place is lacking an attic or unfinished basement as yesterday’s home did. I definitely see a family keeping the bikes/toys/play equipment in the extra two spaces.

I’m just not sure the place screams over $550k to me…

  15. I’d think that if one didn’t need the double depth garage, you could wall off the half closer to the yard, and make it into a guest house, office, artist studio, etc. with french doors out to the yard…

But given how some of my friends’ 2-car garages looks with their two cars and all the strollers, bikes, wagons, 2nd fridge, etc. I could see the attraction even for people with only two cars.

  16. For some people, large garage space is one of the most important things when looking for houses. In fact, my brother is looking at a five bedroom house today in “urban” Kansas City just because it has a four-car garage. He wants the garage space in store his car, four motorcycles, and tools. Now as to what a single guy with one dog will do with five bedrooms in beyond me.

The number of garage is maybe the most exciting thing to such a generic renovation. Cute house, but the renovation needed more inspiration.

  18. I also have a problem paying 574k and then having that as my front stoop.

one of the great perks of city livin’ is front stoop sitting and mingling with passing neighbors.

sorry for 574k and a too big garage its too much to have a front stoop fail of this proportion

Given that it’s *south* of RV, don’t think that works.

Right because all the other realtor created neighborhoods & names follow some logical guideline.

not a safe ride though for a cruiser. BTW i havent had one in a year, i caught a craving now. Guess where groove is eating at for lunch tomorrow?

“Given that it’s *south* of RV, don’t think that works.”

i can make it work, i just need a website and a few banner signs to put high up on lightpoles and slip a $50 to a realtor (or two) to start dropping it in their listings.

Would be nice to have a place where I could park both PT Cruisers AND my Mustang 5.0! Might even have to buy another car if I got this place, or I could just get some cool toys. I think this will appeal to someone like me who likes his toys!

Not only is it a tiny porch, but that metal railing is just hideous. I didn’t notice the front porch before I posted the first time, but then when I saw the picture later it was all I can see, and now I can barely look at the picture without gagging.

my only logical reasoning is they had left over fence material and underestimated the wood budget.

How would a 4 car garage be a deal breaker? I have a two car garage, that can only fit one car because of all the excess bikes, holiday decorations, tools, etc. If you don’t need the storage space, I think the idea to turn it into a guest house or in law apartment was good. Or turn it into a rental unit.

Whatever you guys! My PT Cruisers are gonna be worth more than your cars some day. They have a cult following and collector value. Why don’t you guys just go look at some more lofts!

  35. Yep. I think Hamlin Park works, it is a pretty crazy-huge park, plus the fieldhouse is decent, and they have a pool. It is definitely the major attractor south of Belmont (no way is this Roscoe Village “proper” ha ha ha), and more importantly, it ain’t going anywhere.

My SWPL alarm is going off full tilt on you after that comment. It’s sure as heck bigger than Park West or Jonquil, but that comment shows how much you need to leave your bubble. Hamlin Park doesn’t compare to Humboldt, Douglas or Garfield Park. Hamlin Park isn’t really huge–it’s about the smallest size that one could be considered a real park in Chicago. Heck even Oz park is bigger.
