  4. Now this house, the kitchen should be designed to accomodate hired domestic help. Not that it shouldn’t also work for the residents, but an open kitchen here would be a travesty.

  7. Beautiful, beautiful old house. Look at the architecture. Love the dining room floor.

I don’t really know what this place is honestly worth, but this neighborhood’s stock should rise given who lives around there. If Obama prevails on Tuesday, somebody will be able to make a living off conducting tours of the area, and it will be featured in publications allover the country.

  8. Laura,

That area has already seen tremendous appreciation over the past few years, at least for SFH – not unlike that in California and such. And it is still not the safest of neighborhoods. Indeed, that house is just a block or so away from Drexel, which sees a lot of gang activity.
    Some gorgeous homes, though!

  9. First, if Obama did get elected, the nightmare security around that area will drive people away.

Second, the Obama’s could just sell then house, then what?

  10. Obama didn’t the neighrborhood make. The black elite of Chicago have long lived in Kenwood as well as a wide mix of people, B.O. moving won’t affect that at all.

I *think* (I can’t find the book right now to confirm) that his house was originally owned (i.e. built) by one of Monet’s patrons and that there was a huge waterlillies series living here before it moved north to the Art Institute.

Think of the B&B you could have in the Olympics came though. Shame about the painting woodwork in the living room, unless those beams are plaster.

  11. What I meant was because Obama might be there is not a reason to buy…per Laura’s post earlier.

Also, perhaps Obama could buy it for his aunt who apparently has been in this country illegally for the last 4 years and living on welfare and public housing assistance the whole time! Wow. Also, from what has been reported she doesn’t work but volunteers her time to help others get on the public dole too… Nothing like sucking up tax payer dollars and spreading the wealth around, guess it runs in the family. Just wait until they open up the floodgates to immigrants more to shore up the voter base. Heck, let’s just give away all the hard earned wealth in the U.S. Come to the U.S….no need to work, get free food, free housing, free health care, free education…and eat until you’re obese!

  13. As to the neighborhood, just North of there is a little shady but this area has some amazing old homes and the area is heavily restricted in terms of size of new buildings etc… Therefore no apartment buildings, housing projects etc.. Its a neighborhood with a lot of great sfh’s and I believe it will continue to become a great place for families of all races that either can’t afford/dont want to live up North.

  15. If I need a sermon like that, I’ll visit the National Review.

As for the property, there’s a lot of great housing stock down there that could use some landmarking. The bones are there for a great neighborhood to develop.

  16. The problem with that and many other areas of the city is the low income housing. Whenever you have concentrations of low income housing those people tend to create the crime problems. Theres a bunch of projects just north of Kenwood in the Oakland hood.

  17. All I ask is for immigrants to contribute to our society….work, pay taxes, follow the laws, etc. Obama’s aunti broke the law for 4 years, doesn’t work, lives off public assistance (for the ENTIRE time she’s been here, more than 4 years). I know of numerous stories like this, it really is sickening as most of us work to live, save, and better the lives for our families. And of course you dare not criticize or you’re just mean, oh well. The truth hurts I guess. The U.S. is the only country where the majority of adults in poverty are obese…it is crazy. Who is going to buy these big homes if taxes keep going up? If you want to make the cities a better place to live and improve property values, enact workfare, not just welfare. With all the able bodied people on the public dole the U.S. ought to have the cleanest cities in the world!

  18. And the democrats in congress said about the revelation that Obama’s aunt is an illegal on the lam:

“This leak is deplorable and I urge you to take immediate action to investigate and discipline those responsible.”

    — You mean reporting an illegal is illegal! Oh please…..what has this country come to??? We should be reporting congress for not enforcing this stuff.

  19. Oh and you can live on the public dole but still have money to donate to political campaigns??? Come on, you just can’t make this stuff up!

  21. In all fairness… I don’t think there is any country in the world that does not control immigration. Amazes me that some people suggest controlling inflow is racism.

As for Obama being responsible for his Aunt. That’s absurd, I wouldn’t like it being suggested that I take responsibility for my immediate sister the way she acts.

    John… both parties suck.

    0
    0
  22. IB – No one is suggesting Obama be responsible for his Aunt…I mean, that’s the federal government’s responsibility right, god forbid family help first. With that said, the guy mentions her in his book and in some speeches. He made her an issue and they took campaign contributions from her. If you make political contributions with the federal dollars you receive then that should be deducted from the next welfare check, period. By saying both parties suck and give up doesn’t solve one thing and is a cop out. The guy can’t even run his own family and campaign for pete’s sake.

With respect to immigration, you would not believe the fraud being perpetrated in the real estate industry by foreigners……..if you knew some of the stuff I knew this country would be building walls.

    0
    0
  23. John.. you are correct, if he mentions it in his book he deserves the criticism.

He has run one hell of a campaign though, you are wrong about that.

I tried to make a difference once, it was not worth it. They do both completely suck BTW. I stand very firmly on that.

As for taxes, They are fair as currently stands. They will not stay fair for long though.

  24. IB, the country you are in, Australia I think, has some very strict immigration standards. As a developed country surrounded by 2 billion people in Asia, China and Indonesia, 1/3rd of the world’s population is a boat ride away and they all want to immigrate…. illegally…and if they are caught, they are placed in the infamous Australian detention camps. To rot. if you immigrate illegally into the US you probably won’t be caught, and if you are caught, you have years and years of immigration court hearings, and then you can blow off the results, and then live in housing projects for free. That’s what Obama’s auntie did. And millions of other people just like here. and of course the retort you always hear is, “but i pay taxes, I deserve citizenship.”

  25. America will never work as a socialist country. It works well in Europe because you have small homogeneous populations of wealthy and educated people who are basically entrusting their basic welfare (healthcare, pension, employment) to the government instead of private business. State of IL and switzerland (my country of ancestry) have similar population but very very different demographics and wealth distributions. Even the largest european country has less than 1/3rd the population of the US. This is the US and we’re going to have the rich and the poor and a large middle class. With 300 million people I think that’s a pretty good result. China has 1 billion and most of them are poor, along with India too. Enough rambling, the Bears better beat the Lions tomorrow…good night!

  26. HD… I agree on immigration. It is insane to have an open border. I have to return to the States withing 180 days because the Consulate did not tell me to get one stupid letter from the Chicago Police stating I am not a criminal. Funny thing is no shortage of illegals in the US from the country I am now living in (oh and I legally own 2 homes, 100% paid for, where I am… some threat, huh)

Europe homogeneous… not sure I would go there on that one. Germany did a fine job of trying but a trip around France would suggest otherwise.

And yes I am really big on distribution curves and believe for those that have there must be have nots. I am slightly to the right of the Chicago business school economically if you can believe that. Of course socially a pot smoking liberal 🙂

  27. Switzerland is a skewed example. It is the oldest country in Europe and will probably survive the EU and most other European countries. The Swiss, like the Australians, are very skeptical towards immigrants and are not concerned about being perceived as politically incorrect. People from inferior countries know not to seek asylum there, they don’t even let in eastern europeans. This also means that no, you can’t have a minaret taller than their church towers.

Its a weird and complicated country I don’t quite understand, but I think they are right on certain things, chiefly preserving their heritage. Another interesting fact about them is unlike many other European nations their people have little desire to be expats and travel the world for a career for money. Stronger culture than what some would call value bankrupt Anglo countries.

It remains to be seen how this financial crisis will affect Switzerland. Their economy is much more heavily skewed into banking vs. the US and they don’t have the EU for support, it might not be pretty. At least the Alps always will be.

  28. IB – We’ll see what fruits that campaign brings. If Obama does get elected, then in two years he will be hated. Obama hasn’t really done anything in politics or leadership besides getting elected to the U.S. Senate … but hasn’t done much there. That has its advantage since the campaign has been able to create this “Obama brand”, this “persona” that simply does not really exist. I talk to people who will be voting for Obama and there is this sense that if we just get him elected all the problems will go away….everyone will magically become millionaires and the war on terrorism will be over. People say Obama will know what to do, Obama wil fix that, Obama will solve health care, etc. There are seriously people out there that think if Obama gets elected the principal on my mortgage will be taken care of by the govt…I am not joking, I have spoken to people who say exactly that. The expectations are fantasy and they simply can not be met. Those that placed their “hope” in the guy will be the ones that get hurt the most. Unemployment will continue to rise, probably for the next 2 years. Who will get hurt the most? Those with the least education and job skills….the same people who are putting their hope in the guy. They will turn on him, and it may happen quicker than you realize since once he is elected the only excuse can be well “once he takes office”, “after his first 100 days in office”, “after his first year in office” but the short memory will turn quickly. I have been saying this for months and now there are news stories that the Obama campaign will be trying to lower expectations right after the election if he wins. You can’t beat the macro economics that we’re in…especially with the fed deficits.

From what I have seen, McCain is telling you what you need to hear, Obama is telling you what you want to hear. Obviously if politics is just about getting elected then Obama is running a better campaign so far but if politics is more than that, about helping people and creating a better society then McCain has done a better job overall.

That is my rantings….I’m sure people will disagree, but know that despite a bit of partisanship, I am sincere in what I said.

  29. Here is an article about capital flight from the U.S. if Obama gets elected (I have been saying this for months too)…that will hurt the ones with the least education and job skills the most…. WE WANT people to invest in the U.S…..afterall who’s gonna buy all these homes like the one in this thread! You want to attract investment in the U.S., esp in a global economy.

  30. This is how absurd the “Obama Brand” / persona has become. The fed govt can’t solve your personal problems….you know expectations are too high when you see sad stories like this one. People should be rallying around solve their own problems and controlling what they can control in their lives, not sitting back and think the fed govt should do X, Y, and Z.

Man Leaps to His Death From Bridge, Asks Obama for Help

A 52-year-old man who leapt to his death from a freeway overpass left a note asking for Barack Obama to help his family.

El Paso police Officer Chris Mears said the man, whose name has not been released, jumped from an overpass onto westbound Interstate 10 shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday.

In his car, abandoned nearby, the man left a typewritten note on legal size paper on his dashboard and another attached to a rear window.

Both were one-line notes asking for the Illinois senator and Democratic presidential candidate to help his family, Mears said.

Mears said the notes did not include any details about what kind of help the man wanted or what may have prompted him to jump to his death Thursday morning.

  31. John,

Just like most other voters in Illinois come election day: your ideas are insignificant in the grand scheme of things and won’t change a thing. Chances are your candidate of choice will do little to make your life appreciably different in any case.

GDP is in for a contraction, doesn’t matter about the candidate. And I think this economic downturn will be worse than most. We had a heck of a buildup this time.

So if you feel civic minded be like all the other automatons: walking robots who think they are somehow making a difference. But mark my words: you aren’t. Your vote, like your life, my life, vote and everyone elses is insignificant in the scheme of things. So why waste breath here on this blog? If you are really that passionate maybe stand on the street and try to convince undecided voters. The effort is best spent in swing states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Indiana (?). Seriously noone who reads this blog is going to vote one way or another based on anyones comments, trust me at least on that.

  34. John,
I definitely do not think the problems will go away. I just want Bush and Co to go away.

You do realize that John McCain is running as the REPUBLICAN candidate for president though, right? You know, the party headed for the past eight years by GEORGE W. BUSH.

You know the guy that doubled the deficit and made America pariah to the world?

  35. John,
Today in Australia they announced first silicon solar cell to achieve the milestone of 25 per cent efficiency.

Want to know why it wasn’t developed in the USA?? Because God created the Grand Canyon and if he wanted solar power he would have told Jesus he did.

And I have spoken to many people voting for McCain.. they tell me straight to my face it is because they don’t like black people.

Palin yesterday showed she doesn’t even know who runs freaking Canada… Ya know that little land mass between her state and Continental US that is our single largest supplier of energy. Heartbeat away!!

I am a registered Republican.. I hope it is freaking carnage on Tuesday. A lesson never forgotten for betraying me.

  36. Betraying you? Please explain.

This election is a vote against a particular party rather than a vote for a particular candidate. If you ask a friend why he/she will vote a particular way, the explanation will usually start with why he/she could not vote for the other party.

    0
    0
  37. JL.. I am a fiscal conservative and a big believer in crazy things like promoting science and laws. The party sold itself out to a crazy bunch of rapture loving war mongering racist idiots. Is that an acceptable explanation?

As for more socialist policies, I’m not a fan of them at all but I spend my summers in France (actually I live all year in the summer so not a completely true statement) It really is not so bad.

    0
    0
  38. JL… I might add I find Obamas intelligence, critical thinking, and openness to be rather refreshing. Clinton who I never would have voted for proved me wrong, I think Obama will surprise many people on the right. I am voting both against my party AND for someone who i like.

  39. IB: Oh please. Racist is way out of line and you know it. I haven’t heard anything racist from Republicans even in private. My friends are more concerned about what can be done to assist people getting a high school degree as a foundation for the future than anything else, and it starts in the urban schools where less than 50% of blacks graduate. That needs to be improved upon. Whites at 70% is pathetic too. The entire country should be at 85%! Also, is Condi Rice not black? Or does she not qualify for some silly reason when a successful black person doesn’t spout the ridiculous black democratic rhetoric? As a mixed race person myself, I wouldn’t vote for the democratic charlatans ever who want to act like your daddy and dole money out to you like an allowance to keep you on their side. What a pity.

Yes, bankers became too powerful, but those days are over. The next “crisis” in ths country will be healthcare (once we give it away to too many people – someone has to pay for the free healthcare).

  41. Karl.. Racism is huge still. Never heard “the south will rise again” thing have you?

And never has the Treasury been pilfered like it has the past 7 years. The first “no-bid” contract started the slippery slope.
And besides what are they going to teach in school now. Noahs Ark and the Grand Canyon was created by the flood 4,000 years ago. Oh and that we once had a constitution in Amerika?

  42. IB,

The firm that has commercially available 22% silicon is right here in the good old US of A. I wouldn’t buy the stock these days though (SPWR).

Watch IBM: they own the patent for solar + magnifying lenses. Good long term potential if they wanted to go that route.

  43. Back to topic, the projects in Oakland are long gone and what is left is ‘mixed’ income. I love how people say the neighborhood can gentrify when it was never DEgentrified in many senses.

  44. Well, with higher taxes, particularly on the higher income earners ($150K+), the downtown condo market, and nicer housing in general, in the Chicago area (and elsewhere) will get hi very very very hard. The higher end market ($750K+) will feel the real estate depression head on. Just when you think there can’t be more bad news for housing….

  45. John… please tell me this. Last month the deficit increased by 500 bil, 5 trillion in the past 8 years.

Do you not think that is effectively the same as a tax increase that you just have not yet received? Or if they never send you a bill it doesn’t count???

  53. IB – Not scared away, was traveling and still haven’t read all the posts. You wrote “Btw.. if he loses… I would stay inside tomorrow if I lived near Grant Park.” doesn’t that say something about his supporters??? And I am an American and voting, why the yet should we care about a bunch of liberals around the world celebrating that America is weaker, that they are somehow influencing and controlling America, getting on US $$$, etc. You are just plain wrong since you don’t even know Bush and Cheney and what they have done for this country. History will show the world is much safer now with terrorism being crushed instead of flourishing after 9/11 (it tried to around the world, in Europe, in Asia, etc.). If Odumbo does win, then we can start blaming him and the liberals for the 10% unemployment that will happen under his watch. Like a goofy liberal professor what has never really done anything in the real world, all Odumbo has done is sit back and criticize how he is “smarter” and would have made better decisions….so condescending for a guy with no accomplishments other than winning one election to the U.S. Senate (from Chicago area none the less….). Odumbo wants an activist fed govt in your lives for health care, education, your housing….. he will kill innovation which is the engine of American greatness. Why even bother to go to medical school, it just won’t be worth it anymore. Wait until doctors go on strike, then we’ll know we’re a socialist country then! Go back and smoke your pot IB, the delusions are controlling you.

  54. Whoa John, I tend to agree with you but the ranting anger is a little much for Monday morning…..even in Atlas Shrugged the producers of the world ended up OK. What’s the old saying, something about if you redistributed all the world’s wealth so that everyone had an equal share, within 6 months the money would return to the way it was.

  56. Even if wealth was redistributed a good portion of the money will return to the debtor’s creditors. Believe me, if wealth is redistributed, the credit card companies, car companies, mortgage lenders, scorned landlords, the cell phone companies, utilities, etc, will be forming a line outside the courthouse door to execute wage garnishments and freeze bank accounts. Bankrupty isn’t an option for many because of the change in the law in 2005. Of note, the biggest garnishor of income tax refunds is the federal government…usually for back taxes or child support arrears. Money will be redistributed but not quite how everything thinks.

  57. i think Kenwood has the most beautiful housing stock of any neighborhood in the city, BY FAR. I think it’s awesome people are willing to plunk down serious coin to live there. these houses are irreplaceable.

The over $2million market is pretty thin, and this house is on the periphery of the neighborhood, so might be a lengthy marketing period. I wouldn’t want to be selling it now, that’s for sure.

  58. Funny John.. I have always avoided commenting on anything personal but truth be told I know them surprisingly well. Old roomate is one of top 3 guys at homeland security and Chertoff and I used to speak regularly since we had been introduced and seemed to always be buying fish at the same market when I lived in Potomac, Md. I Know pretty much everyone involved at Carlyle group also. James Baker, Gen. Myers…GWB Senior.. and on and on. I had an open invite into that world, I was part of that world, I sold my soul for a few years and that was all I could handle.

Regardless of who wins I expect increased unemployment and some serious economic hell. Housing NEEDS to CRASH!! But restoring things like habeus corpus and giving people trials regardless of how evil they are, to me, is the American way. Otherwise what the hell do we stand for.

Oh and I was in the world trade center for both bombings. First one I was on the 8th floor. 2nd one I was on the 48th floor. I watched people jumping. I have a room filled with pictures of the buildings. My loft in SOHO faced the world trade center floor ten to the top. Don’t tell me about terrorism, I spent a month going to funeral after funeral. And no matter how high I am I assure you that you will not accomplish in your entire professional career what I had accomplished by the time I was 32.

Btw.. I did it completely high 24/7. 🙂 Not one person knew, ever!!

Now with that said.. the following was something I would have hoped McCain would have said.. It was said by Obama.. who do you think I will trust more. He got it freaking right!!!!

“John McCain wants the government to massively overpay for mortgages in a plan that would guarantee taxpayers lose money, and put them at risk of losing even more if home values don’t recover. The biggest beneficiaries of this plan will be the same financial institutions that got us into this mess, some of whom even committed fraud,” said Jason Furman, the Obama campaign’s economic policy director.”

  59. Now going upstairs (I own the entire top two floors of my building, John) to smoke 4 bowls and run 7-8 miles afterwards. See I write 2 commas into my taxes every year regardless so an extra few hundred for respect of my nation in the eyes of the world is nothing.

And when you borrow 2 bil a day to operate a country you better give a huge shit what the world thinks!!!!!!!!!

  61. IB,

I don’t know whats worse, selling your soul to Carlyle or selling your sole to that stuff. I think it depends on the observers political affiliation probably! Both sides definitely place one over the other.

  63. Oh silly IB….. I retired at 35 and probably have more education, more money, and better looking than you (I’m sorta a taller Matt Damon). Just keep on smoking that pot, your delusions are hilarious!!! PS, I know have traveled with both W and Dick. They may not be popular right now, but they are right. Peace out.

  64. Dude, Matt Damon is not good looking. If he was an accountant no one would ever look twice at him. If he was taller I guess he’d qualify as average. Good thing for you chicks dig the cash.

Homedelete – There is only one poll (out of 10) that show the race under 4 points. IBD will come out today over 5. Watch! This think is so over with Obama winning the elec with over 350.

How is that Homedelete… right on the nose!

  70. Obama can’t even take care of his own aunt for goodness sakes. The guy is as thin as a crack addict and bums cigarettes off people like someone in rehab. Obama has been created into a pseudo-cult leader figure. When reality hits in 2010 and the curtain is pulled back, prepare for the riots.

I don’t need him to take care of me, I can take care of myself quite fine…You on the other hand….need some help….professional mental help. I don’t think the messiah can help you with that.

IB was a fictional character just like SH and half the other people on this board. For goodness sake, even Sabrina (if that’s her real name) is a pseudo-fictional character that even Joe Zekas can’t crack.

  74. If the Obama’s live in the hood, then expect the values to hold strong because this neighborhood’s value is closely tied to the level of security offered (or lack thereof).

With the exception of idling security vehicles 24/7, presidential security can be really nice to have around when security is an issue in your hood. When Kerry was running for Pres, Kerry’s millionaire neighbors on Bacon Hill’s Louisburg Square were letting their kids camp out overnight in the park, play outside without supervision… …the neighborhood was super safe and the neighbors and the secret security guards became very chummy. I’m pretty sure the only headaches were security vehicles idling 24/7 which created noise and exhaust issues.

This Chicago neighborhood won’t have nearly the headaches that Boston did because the streets are 3 times wider than in Boston.

  75. Hopefully the Secret Service can help stop incidents like this:

Judge mugged near Obama’s house Monday
    http://www.suntimes.com/news/24-7/1266202,CST-NWS-judge07.article

The neighborhood will never be safe until the projects are moved.

  76. First of all, most of the actual U.S. Secret Service will be near the house, not blocks away….so don’t just let your kids wonder. The actual secured area is small but there will be layers of state and local police around. It will be a lot safer, but don’t be stupid.
