Southport Is Hot! Tribune Says Rosie O’Donnell Is Buying in Lakeview

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that Rosie O’Donnell is apparently under contract on a house in Lakeview.

Rosie O’Donnell, whose new Chicago-based TV debuts next month, is under contract to buy a 6,000-square-foot home in the Lakeview neighborhood, according to two sources.

The home, which is listed for $2.5 million, is currently owned by a top executive of the Oprah Winfrey Network, or OWN, which will air O’Donnell’s new show, the sources said. The negotiated purchase price is close to that amount, according to a source, who declined to be named because the sale is not final. On Wednesday, O’Donnell told the audience at a test taping of “The Rosie Show,” which premieres Oct. 10, that she was purchasing a home in Wrigleyville. According to an audience member, O’Donnell said the seller agreed to include all of the furniture, or else she wouldn’t have bought it.

There aren’t many houses listed for sale in Lakeview at $2.5 million that are under contract right now- except for one- and it’s in Southport.

The 5-bedroom home was new construction in 2007 and last sold in 2008 for $2.4 million.

  1. I’ll just say that as nuts as the threads here can get, this place can’t touch the Tribune’s message boards (see how many at the story above you can stomach) for non-sequitor hate-spewing boors.

Get in before you’re priced out.

Vince Vaughn is next. Celebs are tired of the gang-infested, wilding-ridden Gold Coast. ELP is the old and busted, SoPo is the new hotness.

The internet is an awful place where people say awful things. But people on newspaper websites can be relied on the be the stupidest, angriest bunch of aholes I’ve ever witnessed.

Not sure why that is. Everytime I dare peak at the comments on a Trib story I get the image of cranky old people. They’ve been getting the Trib since the 50s, so where are they going to go when they get online? The Trib.

  7. While CribChatter is right that nothing had been under contract at that price point in Lakeview at the time of that post, that changed yesterday. The house that Rosie bought (address can be found all over the Internet) went under contract in the MLS around 5:15PM on Thursday.

Honestly have you seen Rosie lately? She looks like a whale. She is the definition of trashy. You can put her in YSL and she’d still look Walmart. I think the house is definitely not too trashy for her. I have no empathy for a very rich person who has all the help she wants in the world and has kids and yet cannot exert enough control over her eating habits to stay healthy for her family’s sake. I don’t mean for her to look like a model but it won’t kill her to get in shape.

How many big flat panel TVs do you need to have before you’re over the edge into tacky?

I count 6, including three in a row (WTF)in a room that’s set up like a theater, expect there’s ALSO a theater room with a giant screen.

I have to say that in a house of this size and price I don’t want to sit in my living room and look at the wall ovens in the kitchen.

man, it would suck to be the staff having to deal with that.

  17. ” I’d take this greystone (3707 Magnolia) all day long”

They *completely* ruined that front living room with that awful f’ing fireplace. Who does that? Who likes that? HORRIBLE.

At least there isn’t a tv over it.

“three in a row (WTF)in a room that’s set up like a theater”

It’s the sports-watching room. I’d wager someone in the house is a serious fantasy sports participant. Get Sunday Ticket, watch 3 games at once, or 6 with PiP.

Also, current owner is/was (apparently) an Oprah producer, so overdone media access for someone in media is a *little* less absurd.

  18. “I don’t want to sit in my living room and look at the wall ovens in the kitchen”

That’s the family/great room. The “living room” is in the front, with the never-used chaise longes.

And if you don’t like seeing the kitchen from the family/great room, you’ve also got the sports room you can modify or the theater room.

Not that it shouldn’t be (other than paint) exactly what you want for $2.5mm, but lotso people like the combo room, so long as they have more formal spaces, too.

Seriously? Have you ever taken a *good* look at her local competition, especially in Wrigleyville? Sweatpants, flip flops, Michigan t-shirt, baseball hat with ponytail sticking out the back, smak’n gum, foul mouthed… but the designer handbag negates all of that I suppose. Maybe they’re all not as big, but the post college/pre mommy/mommy look that’s prolific in Chicago, makes me think she’ll fit right in.

Of course not. I just don’t get it when when someone is singled out on their appearance by a city/neighborhood that isn’t exactly known for its runway looks. Ever been to France… where women put on a scarf to take to out the trash?

Not until the winter, and Eden Rock would be for German tourists… I prefer something in Lurin to be perfectly arrogant. But you’re correct in that I’m missing France lately.

  30. Dishwasher is to the left of kitchen sink, (classily hidden) behind a panel that matches kitchen cabinets. Stainless dishwasher is in butlers pantry for glasses from large parties.

  32. I think there is a huge spectrum between dressing for an opening night gala and looking like a bum. In fairness at least ordinary woman have the excuse that they are busy, have no money, or something. Rosie is a celeb with money and time on her hand. There is no excuse for her and she sets a bad role model IMHO.

BTW, women dress terrible even for Opera in Chicago. The only night they look good is the opening gala. I think it is sad how taking care of oneself is so underrated these days. Well when the swim team wears flip flops to the white house, what do you expect? Besides the aesthetics aspect of the whole thing, I feel it encourages a culture of laziness and neglect. Suddenly if you dress nice, you are a shallow snob. It used to mean you are sophisticated and educated now looking like a slob is a value.

I once read an article that one of the signs of a society in decline is the reversal
of values. Soviets and Chinese for instance and Islamic dictators in middle east were (are) very much against dressing fashionably. Also often times articulate people are ridiculed and elite are disliked and it becomes norm to admire the dumb person as he becomes the symbol of masses rather than the elite (Think W).

  34. muimui, agree totally on your last post.

Many observers consider the current standards of dress to be a sign of social decline, especially the tattoo fad, and I agree. Other people have said that you can judge a civilization (or lack thereof) by its time horizons, and the willingness to cover your body with ugly paintings that cannot be removed shows an inability to project a future in which fashions have changed, or the wearer might want to do something really adult like get a respectable job.

The slob ethic has been with us a long time, more than 40 years, and we now have about three generations of people who’ve grown up thinking that it’s normal and acceptable to show up at brunch at the Drake wearing cutoffs. I enjoy wearing nice clothes and even dressing up every now and then, but have often felt silly and overdressed even wearing a nice daytime dress and high heeled pumps.

Well that is an interesting comparision however if it was a post office the bricks would be crumbling and the paint would be peeling.

  36. ““That’s your only objection to the home?”

Didn’t look that carefully. I’m sure I could come up with something else.”

    Took a second look:

Master is on a floor with only one other bedroom, 3d br is on the top floor, with a “game room” and roof deck access. 4th br is in the basement. Not a good family layout, at least until the kids are teens.

So, yeah, something else to complain about. I’d still prefer it to the Rosie house, given the price difference, and that Magnolia is a much better street to be on than Grace. Next door to each other, and for the same price, I think I take Rosie’s house.

  39. Surprised she didn’t get something closer to the studio. Then again Oprah lived near Navy Pier so I guess it’s not a prerequisite.

I can throw a stone from my balcony to the new studio (not that I would!)

  40. “Then again Oprah lived near Navy Pier so I guess it’s not a prerequisite.”

No she didn’t. Oprah has a place in the Water Tower and also bought a loft about 5 or 6 years ago right across from Harpo.

Why would Rosie want to live in the West Loop if she has a bunch of kids? No offense to the west loop- but it’s not the most family friendly place. It makes sense that she’d end up in Southport- as there are kids all over the place in that neighborhood.

  41. Well, The West Loop does have a very good public grade school (Skinner) and easy distance to Payton and Young high schools. Some nice parks nearby too, plus a short distance to the kid-friendly spots in the Loop area.

But then again wouldn’t you expect that Rosie herself will be spending a lot of her spare time in Girls Town (Andersonville), north of Lakeview/Wrigeleyville?

  43. Drake public spaces are still great however the rooms are a bit small and outdated by todays newer properties.

The West Loop could be good solution for a young family but that area of Lake view is an excellent choice for her current needs of older kids and teens.

  44. “Well, The West Loop does have a very good public grade school (Skinner) and easy distance to Payton and Young high schools. Some nice parks nearby too, plus a short distance to the kid-friendly spots in the Loop area.”

Her kids split time with her partner in NY. There is no mention that they will be going to school here full time. So if you had $2.5 million to spend and 4 or 5 kids (don’t remember how many she has) would you REALLY want to live in the West Loop? Do they shut down the streets for Halloween trick or treating (like they do in Southport?)

I’m not saying they do or don’t- but Southport is VERY kid friendly. To the extreme, really. It’s all leafy and green and there is a Dairy Queen right there.

It’s no contest if you have a bunch of kids (not to mention easy access to Wrigley Field (you could walk there!) and the lake front.

Again- sorry- just my opinion- but it’s no contest.

By the way- what are the “kid-friendly” spots in the Loop again? I don’t recall seeing or walking by anything in the loop that was “kid-friendly”- except Millennium Park.

  45. “By the way- what are the “kid-friendly” spots in the Loop again? I don’t recall seeing or walking by anything in the loop that was “kid-friendly”- except Millennium Park.”

    Exactly.

Our kid gets to the Loop maybe once a week all summer, to run around in the fountains at Millennium (and hit the kids’ tent that Target hosts), plus a few times a summer to picnic and catch the GPO. And then there’s about a trip per week or two during the summer to Navy Pier (to hop a water taxi over to the Shedd, or just walk around NP), and a trip or two per week all winter to NP to hit the Children’s Museum. But that’s it. Heck, I don’t consider the Loop to be terribly *human* friendly, let alone kid friendly (certainly not THE Loop, and for the most part not the West Loop, and with a few pleasant exceptions, not even the SL).

That’s Lincoln Park to a t (minus the Michigan t). It was like a cult there. They all looked alike. I remember back in the early 90’s my sister used to do that baseball cap thing with the pony-tail sticking out (in……Michigan).
