The Adler & Sullivan 5-Bedroom Rowhouse Is Still Available In The Gap: 3141 S. Calumet

We last chattered about this vintage 5-bedroom rowhouse at 3141 S. Calumet in the Gap neighborhood of Douglas in July 2012.

See our prior chatter here.

Most of you thought the rowhouse, which is a rare Adler & Sullivan designed house, was beautiful but you didn’t know anything about the Gap neighborhood.

Since July, it has been reduced $36,000.

If you recall, according to the designslinger blog, it is the only survivor of more than 2 dozen houses designed by Adler & Sullivan in the Gap neighborhood in the 1880s.

Read more about The Gap neighborhood here.

Built in 1885 on a standard 25×125 lot, it has a lot of its original features intact including the grand staircase and wood wainscotting. The entry way is also marble.

There are 5 fireplaces, including in the master bedroom, pocket doors, original door knobs and a stained glass skylight.

The kitchen has stainless steel appliances but you’re not buying this house for the kitchen.

4 of the 5 bedrooms are on the second level with the fifth on the third level.

The listing says it has a rooftop deck.

However, the rowhouse doesn’t have central air and it doesn’t have parking.

Where are all the classic architecture lovers to snatch up this property?

Shirley Amico at Koenig & Strey Real Living has the listing. See the pictures here.

  1. I wish I could buy this house. I’d just lie on my back in the front hall and admire my staircase for hours at a time.

  3. No Ac, No parking in a car centric neighborhood, no thanks!

Love the looks though, except for the kitchen but those two things kill it for me. I don’t want to park on the street, ever, if possible

  5. These oddball domain names on listings make me laugh, I dunno why.

I like this place too. Neighborhood maybe near Obama’s presidential library someday at michael reese. This is really a true Chicago property. Reminds me of the store on Grand Ave: http://www.urbanremainschicago.com/ Ever been to this place? It’s a favorite of mine.

  6. Loved it then, love it now. I could see this being the kind of property you move into and never leave… its gorgeous (even with the horrid kitchen and baths).

Piecemeal some renovations, dump the electric baseboard heat for old school boiler/radiator system and install a SpacePak cooling system, live in bliss.

  7. Pretty tempting despite the bad kitchen/no parking. How many people get the chance to say they live in a Sullivan-designed home?

  8. There is room in the back for a garage and you can get a curb cut, that only leaves solving the air issue.
