The Perfect House for the Fireplace Lover: 1535 W. Jackson in the West Loop

When this 4-bedroom home at 1535 W. Jackson in the West Loop was built in 1893, it made sense that it would include 5 fireplaces in order to keep the occupants warm in the cold Chicago winters.

Now, the house also has a professional grade kitchen with radiant heated floors. It also has central air.

Two of the 4 bedrooms (and a den) are on the second floor while the other two bedrooms are in the lower level.

The property has a 188 foot lot but it appears that the parking is simply two spaces as the listing says “room to build 2 car garage.”

The 1500 block of West Jackson was designated a Chicago landmark district in 1976. The remaining structures on the street were built from 1879 to 1893. It is one of the more unique streets in the west loop.

  4. Just think you too could pay a million bucks to live 3-4 blocks from the united center…

    just…

    hell no!

  5. And think of the hefty profit you can pay the current owner!

What saddens me is that there are $700k in mortgages on this property with a $869,000 bubbly purchase price. You would think someone this old would have some home equity; you know, because that’s just prudent financial planning…but instead they take out $700k in mortgages..

unless of course this isn’t an old person living here, then that’s just downright scary.

  6. At first I got excited about the 188′ lot. Then I saw that it is 17′ wide – which explains why the backyard looks like it does. Ever build a house on a bowling alley? While you are correct Sabrina that the listing points out that a garage could be built, it also stated in the Property Features “Garage: Detached, 2 Car Garage” – I think that should say “Garage: None”

This place is certainly unique… but I’m not sure in a good way.

  9. groove likes the kitchen but doenst understand the table in front of the kitchen fire place? (did i sound like tarzan there?) is that even a fire place?

the part i dont like is the narrowness leaves a lot to be desired for entertaining in the dining room. well people were smaller back in 1893 (and didnt have hobbit legs either anon)

  11. A friend’s realtor had this listing prior to the current agent. If I remember correctly, and it’s possible I don’t, because it was a wild druken crazy night, my friend said the owner wasn’t expecting to sell anywhere close to the listing price of $975k.

I will give it a thumbs up for being unique. I’m guessing it would sell slightly below the 2004 price.

  12. Know a few people who live on this street. Most basements are low ceilings with dirt floors and outside entrances

Don’t know ’bout the ceilings or the floors, but it certainly looks like the entrance is only from outside from the floorplan.

“is there a lower level and then a basement as well”

The lower level appears to be at ground level.

  14. This is not the West Loop. Near Westside, yes.

Good location if you want to attend Malcolm X College.

  15. Looks like grandma wants a bailout.

Also a pet peeve of mine is those kitchen cabinets. Notice how the tops of the cabinets aren’t level? Some cabinets have a higher top than others? I see this a lot and its grotesque and trashy.

    500k for this one.

Um, the stovetop vent or hood appears the reason they aren’t level.

And its no trashier than the plaid ceiling in the very same room. This whole place is like a wealthy grandma took some acid and then went to the mart to pick up about every random piece of furniture and mish mosh it together with bright paint colors.

i dig the kitchen very much and the colors, and dig the vintage/grandma vibe.

MG does very good job on the pictures (lots and lots of high quality photos) and floorplans. he does earn every penny of his listing,
even with his Sq ft issue thing, he does go above and beyond for his listings!!!!!!!
which says alot considering the half assed agent listing we mostly come across on crib chater

  19. Did you catch the washing machine hidden behind a 4′ high curtain in the bathroom? Solid staging!

  20. “even with his Sq ft issue thing”

This one is pretty fair, based on the room measurements on the floorplan, but relies on the basement–which may be not fair–to hit that 4k mark.

  21. Groove, I’m totally with you– I shudder to think what this means, but I think this place has helped me discover my inner grandma.

Plaid ceiling, I never knew thee.

  22. Nice catch with the washer/dryer being hidden in the bathroom. I know I would much rather fold laundry than read the paper while pushing one out.

  24. 1500 west is now the “West Loop”? Why not just move West Loop all the way out to Austin Blvd? Crawford Avenue anyway.

  25. Old Man,

Once I had a young gal explain to me vehemently that she lived in the Loop and not West Loop because she lived before the highway. Historical boundaries and community areas meant nothing to her, and she would defend she lived in the Loop until she died.

So I guess the “West Loop” could indeed extend as far as a realtor could convince their buyer. Lombard, maybe? 😀

You *are* old. When’d they rename it? 1934?

  28. I know most of you think the decor in this place is ghastly, but is there a non-pejorative way to describe it? I kind of like it and would like to describe it to a decorator using appropriate “lingo”. In fact I’ve always wanted my place to look like the alien hotel set at the end of 2001. You grandma haters don’t have to come over.

  29. Wow. I love how everyone on this site just bitches and criticizes. It’s a super cool, unique historical home on a beautiful boulevard. Redecorate, paint the whole thing beige, whatever. There’s plenty of pluses for the right buyer. I’d rather see something interesting like this Victorian home than tour another cookie cutter house with no personality.

  30. Wow. I actually really like this place. Did a walk through and the inside is much larger than it looks from the pictures. I thought the place had a nice vibe to it.

  34. Random question for whomever can help me- how do I look up the current terms of a mortgage on a particular house? I am going to bid on a place and I want to see what kind of mortgage situation the owner is in. Thanks in advance!
