The Prairie 4-Bedroom With A Picket Fence In Olde Portage Park: 4039 W. Hutchinson
This 4-bedroom Prairie style vintage home at 5039 W. Hutchinson in Olde Portage Park has been on the market since July 2012.
Built in 1910 on an oversized 35×125 lot, it even has a picket fence (sorry- not white though.)
The listing says it has a new kitchen with white cabinets, stainless steel Bosch appliances and a tin ceiling.
Some of the original built-ins remain, including the one in the dining room.
The second floor was rehabbed in 2006 and has a newer full bath with skylight, 2 bedrooms, an office and a playroom. The other two bedrooms are on the main level.
It appears there is an unfinished basement.
There’s no central air but there’s a 2 car garage.
Originally listed at $409,900, it has been reduced $50,000.
The house is now listed just $4900 above the 2003 sale price.
Is it now priced to sell?
Janet Robertson at Century 21 McMullen has the listing. See the pictures here.

we went to the open house over the summer. i think we took a pass because the asking price (then) and what you get wasn’t sufficient in our minds to offset no central air and 100 amp electrical service. I don’t recall fancy appliances and the current pictures still show white ones, unless they are the new white ice that someone linked to here.
Olde Portage Park = Realtor(tm) speak.
I’m kind of surprised they didn’t take care of the a/c during the 2006 rehab – makes me wonder if it would be very tough to do / cost prohibitive in this space. Very cute but I would repaint the exterior.
Very cute, but kind of tight spaces, esp. the newer bathroom where it looks like showering would be impossible due to the sloping ceiling. The exterior could definitely use a paint job. The price seems reasonable, but I’ll bet they’re moving for school reasons:

Adding the “e” to the end of Old has gotta mean at least a 10K markup.
There is no e in Olde Portage Park. Old Portage Park is not a neighborhood and I don’t think it ever was one, but instead was a park district. The actual park has been there for 90+ years. It was called Portage Park because of the portage for canoes between the 2 rivers, which I think are actually 6-7 miles apart.

Thanks Dave M. I wanted to say something about the “e” myself but figured you all would have that covered. First I’ve ever seen it spelled like that! It’s kind of quaint though- don’t you think? 😉
Its Portage Park. If there is such a thing as Old Portage Park, I would say is South of Montrose East of Milwaukee West of Cicero – real small pocket of pretty nice houses.
I would agree with Lunker’s boundaries except add East of Laramie, instead of Milwaukee. There are a lot of cottages and four squares in that section that match the ones found east of Milwuakee. Other side of Laramie is mostly bungalows.
As Lunker and Icarus mentioned, this enclave is very pretty and it is also super convenient.
You will not be reliant on a car like you will in most parts of Portage Park.
You’ve got the Blue Line at Montrose and you’ve got all the services – grocery shopping, restaurants, etc. on Cicero, Milwaukee and IPR.
People come from all over the city to shop at Family Fruit Market at Cicero and Belle Plaine.
I’ll give you Laramie as that boundary. It is a really convenient location – Edens and Kennedy right there, Blue Line and Metra as mentioned. Nice area of Portage
