Timeless Elegance in the Gold Coast: A 2-Bedroom Pre-War for $475,000 at 73 E. Elm

This 2-bedroom in 73 E. Elm in the Gold Coast came on the market in May 2025.

73 E. Elm was built in 1928 and the listing calls it a “pre-war” boutique building. It has only 48 units. There’s no parking.

It was designed by famed Chicago architects McNally & Quinn.

The building has 24-hour doorstaff, a rooftop deck with lake views, on-site engineer and extra storage lockers. The listing says it’s a pet and investor friendly building.

The unit has many of its vintage features including a formal entry foyer with arched doorways, crown molding and rich, dark parquet floors throughout.

It has a decorative fireplace framed by cove molding.

The kitchen has been “recently renovated” and has white cabinets, quartz countertops and “brand-new” stainless steel appliances.

The listing says there are “two enclosed bedrooms” which may seem strange wording except I believe these units were originally one bedrooms with a formal dining room.

There is a primary suite and the second bedroom is a “charming woodpaneled room with French doors, perfect as a guest bedroom, den or home office.”

There is just one bathroom and it has a walk-in-shower.

There is no central air but it has “small duct high velocity cooling.”

It also doesn’t have in-unit washer/dryer, but a shared laundry room onsite, or parking. Parking is available to rent in the neighborhood.

This building is near Oak and Rush Streets, Oak Street Beach and the shops and restaurants in the Gold Coast and on Michigan Avenue.

There are numerous bus lines nearby.

Listed in May 2025 at $475,000, it is still listed for $475,000.

This building is popular with those who love vintage buildings and design. This unit is 1200 square feet.

Will it get this price?

Chloe Ifergan at Jameson Sotheby’s has the listing. See the pictures here.
