Vintage Top Floor 2-Bedroom with Extra Large Private Deck for $525,000: 1400 N. LaSalle in Old Town
This 2-bedroom at 1400 N. LaSalle in Old Town came on the market in May 2025.
Built in 1879, 1400 N. LaSalle has 7 units. It’s a 3-story walk up with a vintage staircase and skylights in the shared hallway. It has a bike room but no other amenities.
This unit is a top floor unit with some of its vintage details. It has crown molding, high ceilings, and a wood burning fireplace (no original mantle, unfortunately.)
There are hardwood floors in the living/dining combo.
The second bedroom has a window and is 8×8. According to the floor plan, it doesn’t have a closet.
There’s also a small staircase that leads from the entry hallway into the living room.
The living room has a wood burning fireplace.
The kitchen has a wall that separates it from the living/dining room. It doesn’t have a window but it gets natural light from a massive skylight.
It has wood cabinets and stainless steel appliances.
The primary bedroom has an en suite bath and a door that leads to the “extra large” private deck which has brick walls, a fabric retractable canopy, and west facing views over Old Town and the sunsets.
The unit has some of the features buyers look for. It has a washer/dryer in the kitchen. There’s no central air, however, but it has wall units (literally in the wall).
There’s no parking but the listing says that it’s available at Sandburg Terrace for $240 a month.
This building is near the shops and restaurants in Old Town, with Small Cheval just a block and a half away, and those of the Gold Coast. There are several bus routes nearby.
Listed in May 2025 for $555,000, it has been reduced $30,000 to $525,000.
The listing says “Motivated Seller.”
What price will it take to get this sold?

Terrace is by far the best thing about the unit. But bigly needs refinishing.
I understand the mirrored wall, but hate it.
Kitchen is in dire need of a refresh–even just paiting the cabinets would be a big help. Replace the apartment size w/d with full size stack or (better!) combo unit which would allow that to be more counter space. Movable island that sits on wall to LR would be good, too.
Electric baseboard heat?? Terrible!
Only two small thru wall a/c units, on the top floor, with a skylight?? Neither hardwired? Worse than the baseboard heat!
3S apparently rented for under $4k/mo:
