We Love Authentic Lofts: Brick and Timber on the Drive: 540 N. Lake Shore Drive

540 N. Lake Shore Drive in Streeterville is the only loft building located directly on Lake Shore Drive in the city.

Converted into condos in the early 1990s, before the condo craze, the brick and timber units are extra large.

This south facing 1-bedroom unit is 1128 square feet and has 12-foot ceilings.

Do you have a lot of clothes? It also has an enormous walk-in closet.

The loft has central air but no in-unit washer/dryer (although the building does allow them to be put in in the kitchen.)

Parking is rental in the building.

  1. I like the location but I’d need too spend at least $75k on reno to bring this up to my standards and $640/mo assessment, no w/d, hurts.

  4. Wouldn’t say that, but I bet it won’t fetch the 2000 price now.

  5. If you kind of squint or look at the exterior pic from a distance or a little blurry, it kind of looks like a Harold Ickes home.

  6. Wierd place but huge for a 1br… I’m just not a fan of streeterville and this place looks like an old CPS school converted to condos. The price per sqft isn’t insanity thoug, I’m sure some young couple or high earner will pick this place up.

I just don’t like it. I was looking to move there right out of college to some crappidy rental but decided against it. I don’t know why, but I just don’t like the hood, too residental? Something is wierd that I don’t like and I can’t quite put my finger on it. I do enjoy walking my dogs through streeterville, but I dunno its maybe too vintage?

  9. love this building! have a friend who lives there and the units are HUGE and charming. esp. given the closet space they totally work for a couple where most 1 BDs would are too cramped. i would def. check this one out–the southern exposure is a biggie too.

  10. Cool looking place. We just made an offer on something else in the building, but this one looks a little swankier.

Streeterville is great, by the way – you’re close to the lake for jogging or hitting the beach, you’re close to the loop for commuting to work, and you’re close to places to go out without without living in a mob of college students who don’t have to work during the week (ahem…Lincoln Park).

  11. I am pretty sure the South facing units look right into the 530 N. Lakeshore building.

  12. Check out virtual tour too: http://www.smartfloorplan.com/orders/bin/player07.pl?file=public_html/il/v292263/v292263.xml&map=yes This south facing unit has a completely open view. Overlooks a park (park View condos) and into River East Arts Center/Fox & Obel. Totally unobstructed and a corner unit.

  13. The only thing missing is a Pier 1 papasan chair in the living room.

  14. looked reasonable until I saw the assessments, which are on top of the taxes – not many units to spread out that doorman salary, I guess.

  15. I lived in this building between 2000-2001 and I have to say this is a nice, well-run building. I visited a friend who owns a unit in there and I believe they just recently gutted out the entire lobby / receiving area with complete updates.

  16. cND: actually, there is a block w/a park between 540 and 530. You’d prolly be able to see lake point tower from the window.

Considering you could fit another streeterville/river north apartment inside just the living room (“http://www.smartfloorplan.com/il/v292263/”) the lsd address, it seems to me it should go fast. is 600 really an unreasonable assessment for a full-service building?

  18. I like the warning on the wall for people touring this unit.

  19. If you’re north of the equator, south and west views have the most sunlight. At Luxe Home, snaidero and poggenphol are featuring white enamel kitchens again, it’s back in? The glass block island is a little weird though.

The assessments are not bad if they include heat, A/C and a fitness center. Parking would add to the nut, no doubt.

Streeterville has no soul. It’s frigid in the winter too. Frigid!

I like the unit, but these days nobody knows how to price them.

  20. Nope – the south side is not a decent side to be on. You would look right into someone else’s balcony in the goregous mid-rise in the next lot along LSD. WHAT – is that stop sign on the wall and WHAT – are pictures doing on the wall WITHOUT frames. LEARN HOW TO DECORATE. YIKES!

Not a necessarily a fan of the place, but the size is pretty decent.

  22. I have been in a unit in this building when it was first converted.
Very very noisy. Like most loft conversions the contractor did not consider the sonic conditions of the building only used 2 sheets of drywall in between the units. This is not unlike a college dorm You can hear your next door neighbors conversations. Very very annoying
    Stay away.
