Because it’s a superior product to natural stone? No sealing, no staining, no etching (think marble), comes in an infinite number of colors and natural stone looks. The list goes on. Why wouldn’t someone like it?
That being said, the color chosen in this condo is terrible.
If it doesn’t look like quartz then why even put it in? It looks like cheap laminate. Terrible decision. They even picked a horrible color too. This looks like one of the cheapest rehabs I’ve seen in a while. Cabinets look original, and carpeting has to go. It just looks like a very stale and uninspiring place to live.

Quartz is laminate with some stones mixed in. It looks fake to me. I prefer granite, which I realize is not technically 100% granite, it’s still natural stone (some of which can be quartz) and has little nuances that make each slab look unique.
I enjoyed going to a warehouse and picking out the exact slabs that would be used in my counter tops.

I don’t know how granite can be dated when there are so many different options from which to choose.

I think this place is fine – it’s kind of a blank slate, and it doesn’t have high end finishes, but for this price in this location, you can’t really expect that.
Re: granite v quartz. Either option can look cheap and both options will eventually look dated. (Quartz gets the edge because of lower maintenance)
Shame that Viagio just a block or so west of this building is gone.
Brazilian quartzite is the way to go. If you don’t know what it is you’re not cool 🙂

I don’t buy the argument natural materials become dated, they either look good, like most types of granite, marble and limestone, or not. That’s true today or a thousand years ago. Quartz belongs in a dental office.
Some granites look nice, but so many are terrible. Quartzite is cool, but a bit flashy looking to me. For natural stone, I really like soapstone and marble.

Too often a really ‘beige’ choice is made, and that’s never going to end well.
Thats interesting that you could feel the difference, I have Caesarstone and it doesn’t feel plasticy at all, just feels like a solid stone surface, not as cold maybe but very solid

Soapstone is supposedly *less* porous than granite:

Marble definitely has a porosity issue. And soapstone will ‘dent’.
I had purported limestone kitchen counters that someone said were really soapstone, beautiful, but talk about a bad idea. Even lemon juice was a problem. Have granite now and it wears so much better. Yes soapstone and marble are too porous. The marble in my 12 or so year old master bath shows more wear, by far, than anywhere else in the whole house.
regarding marble and soapstone…you just have to know going in it will never look as good as the moment it’s installed. on the other hand, quartz will always look new.

yes, lemon juice is the worst on marble. anything acidic will cause etching. very difficult to remove and leaves a dull finish to marble. learned the hard way at my previous house when having a party and leaving a bowl of cut up lemons for cocktails. now we have quartz that resembles marble and it looks great.

technically, a laminate is a thin layer of finish material over a solid (cheap) base. quartz is nothing like that. it’s typically 94% natural stone mixed with resins that give it color and make it stain and scratch resistant.
Lemon juice will have no effect on soapstone. That was not soapstone you had.
Go to an old bar in France or Italy. You’ll see 100 year old marble and it’s gorgeous.

The double sinks in the bathroom look odd; one appears to be directly next to the toilet? And I’m not sure how you would open the fridge without banging the cabinet/wall….too close together.

Decent price and a great location, but these buildings have always left me rather cold. The units seem small and cramped, and everything has a cheap 1970s vibe, even when redecorated. Also, the walkup to this building is through a driveway. Not very pedestrian friendly.
