  1. New quartz counters but they look like 30 year old formica in the pictures. I’ll never understand the alleged appeal of quartz. The washer/dryer is a toy.

Not a bargain, but semi-affordable and a very good location. I’d be worried about special assessments in a building of this age though.

  2. Is this the tower in the Jan Terri video, if so add $67k to the ask

Looks like someone got a new HD credit card and went crazy

Should have replaced the flooring in the living room as well

Drop price to $300 and targeted advertising to a recently divorced, non-custodial parent and watch bidding war ensue.

  4. Gah! So many different types of flooring in a small and open space! How much would it have cost to put the hardwood floor down throughout the living space?

I agree with you on the quartz, Sid. I’m not a fan and don’t understand why nearly everyone loves it.

  5. “I’ll never understand the alleged appeal of quartz.”

Because it’s a superior product to natural stone? No sealing, no staining, no etching (think marble), comes in an infinite number of colors and natural stone looks. The list goes on. Why wouldn’t someone like it?

That being said, the color chosen in this condo is terrible.

  6. If it doesn’t look like quartz then why even put it in? It looks like cheap laminate. Terrible decision. They even picked a horrible color too. This looks like one of the cheapest rehabs I’ve seen in a while. Cabinets look original, and carpeting has to go. It just looks like a very stale and uninspiring place to live.

“Drop price to $300 and targeted advertising to a recently divorced, non-custodial parent and watch bidding war ensue.”
-Agreed. Generally speaking this looks like a great place to live when life has defeated you.

  7. Quartz is laminate with some stones mixed in. It looks fake to me. I prefer granite, which I realize is not technically 100% granite, it’s still natural stone (some of which can be quartz) and has little nuances that make each slab look unique.

I enjoyed going to a warehouse and picking out the exact slabs that would be used in my counter tops.

  8. Granite is sooo 2003

Quarts looks a lot better in person, you can’t really see the minute details in crappy photos like this

  10. You can feel the plastic in the “quartz” when you touch it. Blech.

I don’t know how granite can be dated when there are so many different options from which to choose.

  11. with bar none the nicest lake, lagoon and park views in the city. .. perfection.

Especially the view in pic 7!

I think this place is fine – it’s kind of a blank slate, and it doesn’t have high end finishes, but for this price in this location, you can’t really expect that.

Re: granite v quartz. Either option can look cheap and both options will eventually look dated. (Quartz gets the edge because of lower maintenance)

  14. “1-2 year old SS appliances”

If it is possible to get a cheaper package of SS appliances, I’d be interested in seeing it.

“the color [of quartz] chosen in this condo is terrible.”

    That’s being rather kind, marco.

  15. I don’t buy the argument natural materials become dated, they either look good, like most types of granite, marble and limestone, or not. That’s true today or a thousand years ago. Quartz belongs in a dental office.

  16. Some granites look nice, but so many are terrible. Quartzite is cool, but a bit flashy looking to me. For natural stone, I really like soapstone and marble.

The best of the quartz is pretty nice.

Too often a really ‘beige’ choice is made, and that’s never going to end well.

  18. Thats interesting that you could feel the difference, I have Caesarstone and it doesn’t feel plasticy at all, just feels like a solid stone surface, not as cold maybe but very solid

aren’t those stones too porous for countertops?

  20. I really like concrete. Matte and rough hewn granite looks nice too. I’ve seen some nice stainless steel counters as well.

  21. “aren’t [soapstone and marble] too porous for countertops?”

Soapstone is supposedly *less* porous than granite:

“In addition, soapstone is very non-porous, another important strength that sets it apart from granite, sandstone and slate.”

    https://countertopguides.com/guides/the-pros-and-cons-of-soapstone-countertops.html

Marble definitely has a porosity issue. And soapstone will ‘dent’.

  22. I had purported limestone kitchen counters that someone said were really soapstone, beautiful, but talk about a bad idea. Even lemon juice was a problem. Have granite now and it wears so much better. Yes soapstone and marble are too porous. The marble in my 12 or so year old master bath shows more wear, by far, than anywhere else in the whole house.

  23. regarding marble and soapstone…you just have to know going in it will never look as good as the moment it’s installed. on the other hand, quartz will always look new.

“Even lemon juice was a problem.”

yes, lemon juice is the worst on marble. anything acidic will cause etching. very difficult to remove and leaves a dull finish to marble. learned the hard way at my previous house when having a party and leaving a bowl of cut up lemons for cocktails. now we have quartz that resembles marble and it looks great.

  24. ‘Quartz is laminate with some stones mixed in.”

technically, a laminate is a thin layer of finish material over a solid (cheap) base. quartz is nothing like that. it’s typically 94% natural stone mixed with resins that give it color and make it stain and scratch resistant.

  25. Lemon juice will have no effect on soapstone. That was not soapstone you had.

Go to an old bar in France or Italy. You’ll see 100 year old marble and it’s gorgeous.

  26. “Yes soapstone [] too porous.”

But porosity is NOT the problem, at least if it’s real soapstone. Softness can be.

  27. anon is right, both marble and limestone etch, but soapstone doesn’t.

Soapstone can get scratches and Nick’s though.

  28. The double sinks in the bathroom look odd; one appears to be directly next to the toilet? And I’m not sure how you would open the fridge without banging the cabinet/wall….too close together.

    Not a fan.

  29. “Agreed. Generally speaking this looks like a great place to live when life has defeated you.“

LOL. When I think of people defeated by life, I think of refugees fleeing war torn countries with kids in tow or crossing an ocean in an inflatable raft.

  30. ” When I think of people defeated by life, i think of refugees fleeing war torn countries with kids in tow or crossing an ocean in an inflatable raft.”

I disagree. Refugees fleeing war zones & crossing oceans in inflatable rafts are aggressively responding to the challenges life’s thrown at them, not accepting defeat imo. The fam of that cc poster who’ve imo been dealt much lesser challenges but who’ve decided gittin’ high & gittin’ by on SSDI/food stamps/welfare beats getting up & at it and taking another shot at working the way back up US’s ladder – that’s who I think of when thinking of people who’ve thrown in the towel believing life’s defeated them.

  31. SB, I meant more along the lines of dying in the inflatable raft as the issue as being defeated. But, I get your general point that if they get in that raft, and make it, they are not defeated. However, I just don’t think anybody buys a 2/2 in Lincoln Park as a signal they are defeated in life.

Well lyin’ hd imo you should just ignore my posts if anything I type offends you in any way. I was channeling a way certain Americans talk after being inadvertently influenced from going to hear Paul Thorn of Tupelo MS perform. Like Paul Thorn I’m gonna continue choosing to be a hammer not a nail here. Unlike you Paul Thorn’s not a narcissistic white supremacist – “What Have You Done to Lift Somebody Up?”

  35. Decent price and a great location, but these buildings have always left me rather cold. The units seem small and cramped, and everything has a cheap 1970s vibe, even when redecorated. Also, the walkup to this building is through a driveway. Not very pedestrian friendly.

Huh? These guys will soon be banging 165-lb. 48-year old single German women soon.

Probably southbound’s most insightful comment ever on CC.

“is this racist? or just poor taste in cultural misappropriation?”

That applies to the musical “Hamilton”. Where non-white racists appropriated white history and rewrote it. And dumb yuppies and liberal lemmings pay $$$ for it.

  37. “Where non-white racists appropriated white history and rewrote it.”

Again, NO ONE who is educated and lives in the heart of Chicago talks like this. Why would you? You’d be living in Alabama or a town that was mostly white (there are plenty of small towns in, say, Iowa.) Why would you suffer living in the city of Rahm Emmanuel and Chance?

Jealous that you’re not a billionaire because of Hamilton HH? Sounds like you are. And you can’t even say Lin-Manuel Miranda’s name. Maybe because you don’t know it. How sad. Others are more creative AND richer than you will ever be.
