It’s been awhile since we chattered about a penthouse in the historic Brewster building at 2800 N. Pine Grove in Lakeview.

The last time, it was Charlie Chaplin’s old unit.

This time, a large 1-bedroom unit has come on the market.

The listing says it has been “completely remodeled.”

The kitchen has 42 inch cabinets and a large kitchen island with extra thick granite counter tops. The appliances are stainless steel.

It has a beamed ceiling with 3 skylights.

There is a wood burning fireplace in the bedroom along with a private terrace.

The two bathrooms are also interesting. One is just off the living room and has a glass block wall. The second is in the master bedroom and I’ll let you be the judge of that.

The unit has central air but no in-unit washer/dryer or parking.

It has come on the market listed just $1,000 under the 2002 price.

  1. Nice unit. I know I have a fireplace fetish but its pretty sad that the only fireplace is in the bedroom, which doesn’t work quite as well unless your Hugh Hefner or a real swinger baby. Also, I hate units where you have to have people go walking through your bedroom to get to the deck. Also, I guess that works the morning after with a fire going and some coffee on the deck but to have a party and people have to go walking in and out a private space like that.

    This building gives me the creeps..its seems very much like the “Shining,” in Chicago, and of a building that has seen better days but still tries to hold on to its reputation way past its glory.

    It’s a pic from the lobby straight.up the lightwell.

    For anyone who has never been inside, would be a total mystery, as it’s not a good shot.

    I have been in it, and agree the lobby is lovely, and some of the main walkways. But some of the side hallways are odd and the apts themselves seem to be split up and dark. Just my opinion. But I think this unit is very attractive besides those two things I mentioned.

  11. There used to be a great ice cream store in this building about 15 years ago when I lived in the neighborhood. It was a shame that it closed.

    Agree that many of the units here are dark and cramped. But the lobby and atrium are fantastic. A movie, “Running Scared,” from the 80’s, had a scene that took place in the atrium.

    It does seem a bit “Shining” like, I agree. But I like the spookiness.

    I currently live in the Brewster as a renter.
    I live here because I am a vintage freak -period- and am willing to up with much as a result
    It used to be a hotel in the 1890s. It had separate entrances for Men and Women (The Mens Entrance was built over many years ago) The Brewster is the last residential apartment in Chicago with an exposed cage elevator with an operator who is also the doorman. The construction of the building is paramount to a fortress. It is also a rare vintage high rise with 10 ft ceilings. You will NEVER see this kind of quality of construction EVER AGAIN.
    The brewster has many things that will NOT appeal to buyers who don’t care or dont know about vintage.
    Here is what the Brewster DOES have that will appeal to those buyers.
    1) Its in the pocket of east Lakeview that is the safest and most popular location for new college grads’ first apartments. (The other properties around here are rentals that are not that different than sad overpriced dorm rooms)
    2) Rentals in the building rent FAST.
    3) The association is keenly aware of the unique factors involved in dealing with a property of this age.
    (Most properties of this type can attribuite their destruction directly to an incompetent condo association)
    4) The assessments aren’t crazy considering the age of the building.
    If you are not an antique lover. If you are long finished with the east lakeview thing. Probably not the building for you.

    I thought, hmmm, hasn’t this building been on Cribchatter a bunch of times? And indeed, it is so. Best wishes to those who were injured, and not a good time to be an owner.
