A 2-Story Brick and Terra Cotta Penthouse Loft: 120 E. Cullerton in the South Loop

This 2-bedroom duplex up penthouse loft in Bank Note Place at 120 E. Cullerton in the South Loop came on the market in May 2019.

Bank Note Place consists of two buildings, the brick former bank at 120 E. Cullerton and a brick building on the base with newer construction on top at 1910 S. Indiana. There’s an open courtyard with landscaping and fountains in between the two building.

In total there are 118 units and garage parking.

This top floor loft has all the features loft lovers look for including exposed brick walls, large windows and a unique terra cotta ceiling that isn’t found in any other loft building in the South Loop.

There are hardwoods throughout.

The second bedroom is on the main floor and is open to the living room (there’s no door). It has an en suite bath.

A spiral staircase leads to the second floor which has the master suite with a large bathroom complete with a double vanity, rain shower and a bidet, along with a walk-in closet. It doesn’t appear to have a door either.

There’s also an office with a wine cooler and a family room which leads out to a private rooftop deck which is fully landscaped, including with trees.

This is one of the rare duplex up lofts where they didn’t add another level on the roof which doesn’t have authentic loft features. This second floor also has terra cotta ceilings and exposed brick walls.

The kitchen is on the main level and has custom lacquered cabinets, an island and upscale stainless steel appliances.

The loft has central air, a laundry room on the second level and 2-car parking is available for $25,000 each.

Originally listed in May 2019 at $875,000 it has been reduced to $850,000.

Is this the perfect loft?

Nadine Ferrata at Compass has the listing. See the pictures and floor plan here.

  6. Hey Sonies – – What makes you think these are 2008 finishes? These don’t look that old to me. Washer dryer could surely use an upgrade however.

I like it but not at this price point with those assessments and taxes. Pretty sure doors could be added to create privacy if needed but then again this doesn’t really look like a place where anyone other than a couple lives and entertains the occasional overnight guest.

Yeah – – crack pipe dreams on the $250K price increase (including parking). I don’t see it. West Loop maybe because nothing going on there makes sense but not the far south of the loop south loop.

  7. LMAO..

I mean..can’t we at least draw a hard line on the south loop boundaries at 16th or 18th street?

All jokes aside, A very long time ago I lived at 1720 s. michigan and this area was dicey..That was over a decade ago.

Nowadays a lot has changed – A ton of new stuff has come up around Mccormick, including a fat pour and a very random rooftop sky bar last i checked..But also a new park on the very south aspect of prairie, on top of the wonderful women’s park and kids indoor play area off 18th ( Take my kid there for classes sometimes ) – and Developers have filled in a ton of that south indiana / prairie area down to cermak with million dollar townhomes.

The only problem is the rental building across the street ( i think ) that is very much section A, which will drive some buyers away. Also, IF I remember correctly, this building is on south michigan , which is still so-so this far south , but when you go a few blocks west you run into the hilliard towers and chinatown..

So yeah..850 is a “get real” price. You can likely get a 500 sq foot smaller unit in a luxury high raise on prairie or indiana for 850, and *Easily* a 2500 sq foot townhouse on a much nicer block of prairie for that much. This is a joke. Tbh I wouldn’t touch it for 650 , last sale price.

  8. “section A”

Think you mean Section 8. Dictating your comments?

Is he also dictating parentheticals and dashes? And wouldn’t there be autocorrect on dictation for proper names? And what’s with the spaces between periods? V odd all the way around.

  10. “wouldn’t there be autocorrect on dictation for proper names”

Oh, yeah, state names would get auto-capital.

So, not dictating, just mishearing, or hearing correctly from someone who misheard.

Clearly I need to do some posts on Bronzeville which is booming again. If you think this far south is still iffy, then what does that say about Bronzeville?

You say a lot has changed in the last 10 years (um…yeah- around the ENTIRE city) but then go on to say that $850,000 is a joke. We will see. It’s been my experience when I’ve thought people wouldn’t get the price they were asking, that they still get close to the price, not $200,000 less.

    In the city, at least.

  12. LOL @ DZ, anon.

Bite me, guys. Funny you mentioned dictating because that’s part of what I do for a living.

My poor grammar / typing skills are an unfortunate consequence of focusing nearly entirely on the sciences for my whole life. Also, I probably drink too much wine when I’m on here late at night. 🙂

  13. Sabrina,

You’re probably right. I’m just saying what I personally would / wouldn’t pay for this place.

The city *has* changed a lot. I bought a 1400 sq foot unit at 1211 prairie for under 400k in 2012. No clue what it’s worth today but it’s renting extremely well at the moment.

I still doubt anyone touches this unit for over 700k. Yes, Bronzeville has improved ( a bit ) , but it still has a LOT of sketchy areas. I drive my wife to work a few days a month and go right down MLK to U chicago. Not a pretty area by any measure.

  14. Oh, and to clarify, in my line of work we often use ** or “” to emphasize something deemed important, or meant to stand out, etc..Hence I do that a lot. Hard habit to break.
