Because We Love Soaking Tubs In the Bedroom: 990 N. Lake Shore Drive in Streeterville

This 3-bedroom at 990 N. Lake Shore Drive in Streeterville recently came on the market.

Built in 1973 on the corner of Walton and Lake Shore Drive, it is a southeast corner unit with lake and Navy Pier views.

It has a few interesting features including solar panel shades in the living and dining rooms.

The unit also has a step up black soaking tub in what looks like one of the bedrooms.

The eat-in kitchen has black appliances and purple cabinets.

The listing says there are hardwood floors under the carpeting.

It has a washer/dryer in the unit and central air. Parking is leased in the building.

We’ve never chattered about this building before. I don’t even have a picture in my stock photos.

Was the big tub a necessary feature of condo living in the 1970s and 1980s?

Is this a steal for the views and the square footage?

Suzi Landsman at Coldwell Banker has the listing. See the pictures here.

Unit #19A: 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, 2000 square feet

  • Sold prior to 1987
  • Currently listed for $650,000
  • Assessments of $1483 a month (includes a/c, doorman, cable, pool)
  • Taxes of $9219
  • Central Air
  • Washer/Dryer in the unit
  • Parking is leased for $210 to $250 per month
  • Bedroom #1: 18×16
  • Bedroom #2: 11×10
  • Bedroom #3: 13×14

  1. “Is this a steal?”

Uhhh – no – but this unit in the same building DEFINITELY is a steal:

  4. I love the soaking tub in the bedroom, a feature you don’t see often, and the apartment on the whole looks great. The tub is the sort of thing that might put people off until they actually live with it and really enjoy having a tub in an unconventional location. I think it’s about time we separated “bathing” from “washing”.

The kitchen is very jarring and wrecks the effect. But it looks like the cost of replacing it has been figured into the price, which seems reasonable for such an attractive, roomy apartment in this prime location. This is a much better building than 1000 N LSD, featured yesterday.

  5. The unit Clio referenced is a give-away. I didn’t expect to see prices like this in this area. Very good looking apartment on the whole.

But I wonder why the owner didn’t get slide-in or drop-in ceran-top range built into the kitchen, or maybe even an induction cooktop with a convection oven built in below, instead of a bottom-of-the-line electric coil range. It wouldn’t have cost that much money and would have improved the kitchen a lot.

  6. I thought the purple cabinets were bad until I looked at the unit Clio linked to. I prefer purple over those cabinets!

Is part of the reason Clio’s unit is so cheap is due to it essentially being a 1-bedroom now? I rarely understand removing bedrooms….

While I hate the decorating in this condo, especially all of the black, especially in the bathrooms I could actually see someone buying it and pulling the look off without even renovating the place.

  7. Also, that tub looks small for a tub in the bedroom. If I am going to have a tub in my bedroom it has to be big enough to install a slide to get into it on like at the Sybaris!

  8. I don’t think the views are all that fantastic. Most windows seem to be looking directly into other nearby buildings, or are framed by either this building or other buildings. There really isn’t an open view of the lake, at least not that I could tell from the photos.

Thanks for the kudos but I can’t really take credit. I just stumbled across this one last night (total coincidence) when someone sent me a tip about another unit in the building. But I couldn’t resist posting on it. 🙂

  11. Clio- I don’t consider 11D to be a “steal.”

It has a $1100 a month assessment and is essentially a 1-bedroom. It also needs a ton of work to update it. Yeah- maybe if you can get it for $225k or so.

  12. I bet this apartment was the sh#t in the 80’s… now, looking a wee bit dated.

  13. For the space and location, this is a decent price.

Also, if someone can pick up the one clio mentioned for 290 or so, that would be amazing. It would not be that much effort to make it back into a 2 bedroom I presume and again location is outstanding. Perfect for empty nesters or singleton.

  14. It is amazing how even high end apartments can look like crap after 20-30 years with no updates to furniture or overall style and color palette. This place was definitely pimping in ’87 though. All that is missing is a suit jacket with no lapels and tapered pants cuffs tight around the ankles. Or an Adidas track suit (no shirt on under jacket) and gold rope necklace with Mercedes emblem.

  17. If I bought this place, I’d have to start teasing my bangs again. Well, first I’d have to actually get bangs, then tease them. Do they still sell Tresemme mousse? And Aqua Net hairspray?

I think I still have my fingerless black lace gloves, my slouchy off-the-shoulder knit dress, leggings and my big wide black belt. Of course, except for the finglerless gloves, that whole look is in style again. But this apartment isn’t.

  18. The kitchen looks like a black raspberry ice cream cone with chocolate sprinkles. Why yes, I am on a diet, why do you ask?

  19. sometimes i forget, but it is places like these that make me realize how other, new buildings on LSD can price so high.

because the existing stock largely blows, that’s why.

  21. What’s not widely known about this building is that it is facing a massive special assessment. Buyers beware.

  22. I’ve never liked this location much. The lakefront isn’t too attractive here – just a concrete strip running along the highway. And it’s a pretty long walk to Michigan Avenue. Aside from the fancy stores on Michigan, there’s nowhere to walk to, anyway (and how often would you need to walk to Bloomingdales?) I’d rather be farther up the Drive, around North Ave., so I could have easy access to Old Town.

  25. I have owned in the building. 19A has a dead on view of the lake (which is across the street). The only obstruction is the Mies building to the south. The price seems to be a good starting point, however units in the same tier up higher have sold for a bit less. The unit 11D is really not that great as it appears. The view is TOTALLY obstructed by 999 E LSD. All the windows look into brick walls.

  28. This is the building of overdone kitchens – every unit I’ve seen photos of has them. The purple is cool and Clio’s is totally ’74, even the range and dishwasher, those old Kitchen-Aids last forever.

  29. HOA higher than a mortgage = not a big deal and irrelevant. I mean it might be relevant to the cash flow bottom line for a rental scenario, but that’s incidental and not really directly relevant. In the long term MOST people’s mortgages from 2012 will be lower than the assessments say in the year 2020.
