Bye-Bye Leopard Carpet: Milton Schwartz Duplex is Split and Renovated: 320 W. Oakdale

This 3-bedroom in 320 W. Oakdale in East Lakeview recently came on the market.

On the 19th floor of the 21-story Milton Schwartz mid-century modern high rise, in 2017 this unit was on the market for the first time in 61-years.

It was supposedly the only duplex in the building which has 51 units and parking.

The building is famous in architecture circles. Built in 1956, it was designed to be apartments for the rich.

We’ve also seen some interesting interiors in this building over the years.

This unit was no exception as the unit had 2 kitchens and the living room had leopard carpeting.

You can still see the original pictures in the former Redfin listing here.

We discussed the potential of this unit in our 2017 chatter and some of you expressed your love of this building.

You can read our chatter here.

But now, the unit has come back on the market completely renovated as a 3-bedroom, not a 4-bedroom, and it’s no longer a duplex.

It still has a southeast exposure from floor to ceiling windows.

The entire unit has been remodeled with new light fixtures, hardware, and dark wide plank hardwood floors.

The kitchen has a mix of white cabinets and a light wood finish cabinets on the island, which is the look that is now “in” on the coasts.

It also has extra thick white quartz counter tops and Bosch stainless steel appliances along with a subway tile back splash.

The master bedroom has an en suite bathroom and walk-in closet.

There’s a side-by-side washer/dryer.

It has central air and parking is available for $25,000.

The unit is in the Nettlehorst school district.

Was it smart to split up the units instead of trying to sell the bigger 4-bedroom?

Will fans of this building embrace this remodel?

Collin Wasiak at @Properties has the listing. See the pictures and floor plan here.

  1. wow that place had so much character! The washer/dryer in the kitchen, the crazy flooring… I mean I wouldn’t want to live there but what a motif!

Its much more modern now but so boring, I wonder in 15 years if this will look like stuff from the early 2000’s does today

btw my new rental house has the light flooring (albeit vinyl plank) and it looks great!

  2. This is a great unit and a wonderful building if you like mid-century modern. The east view isn’t shown in these photos because unfortunately it directly faces another building. That’s the main drawback of any eastern-facing unit at 320. Otherwise I love it.

  3. I’m surprised at how much I like it. I’m not normally a high rise person, but for $620K (yeah, yeah, and over $1000/month in assessments), I could see living here. Would have to see it in person to see how much the other building bothered me.

  4. Extraordinarily bland. The old space sadly had to go, but this work is so, so uninspiring given where they started from and what they were working with.

Every time a weird ass place with personality gets flipped using this HGTV starter pack, Chicago should weep.

  5. “Extraordinarily bland.”

Agree. It has absolutely NO style at all now. Yeah, the leopard carpet is going to go, but you don’t even know you’re in a famous mid-century modern building anymore.

But that would be the point in a renovation, right? To make it appeal to as many buyers as possible. So you pick the blandest colors and finishes.

  6. I wonder about noise traveling between this unit and its former other half – – I wonder how the “un-duplexed” it and what kind of sound attenuation features (if any) were included in that effort. It’s the main reason I demand a new room if a hotel trys sticking me into one of those rooms that connects to another room via doors on both sides.

  7. What a travesty. This is the most horrendous renovation for a unit like this.

  8. What a letdown! My e-mail inbox showed only “Bye Bye Leopard…” so I clicked on, thinking it was referring to the famous/notorious “Leopard Print House” in Rogers Park! ?

  9. That was my first thought too, and now I can’t find the Estes place. Has it been torn down?

  10. Lol at peot calling this bland. It has an Amazon combination of location and view. Maybe it’s just up to the buyer to add some character. You can’t but style anyways.
