Before people were so artificial and thus forced to worry about “authenticity” (they having had a full dose of it in day to day life) they could paint over wood trim and not worry about it.
Painting over trim is trashy and it’s right up there with cars on cinderblocks on the front lawn.

I love painted trim! ha! ha! My current home has some painted trim and some unpainted trim. I like the painted so much better (as an aesthetic.)
Though I have to say, I DO like the unpainted ceiling beams (if a house has them.)

During the 50’s and 60’s, a large number of victorian homes were ruined. The trim was painted over, drop ceilings were installed, hardwood floors were covered with green carpet, the original siding was covered with asphalt roll siding. It’s taken 100 years for many of these homes to be restored to their former glory.

I curse the trim painters daily as I heat gun paint-laden cherry wood. I figure chelation costs less than having the pros do it.
I am a fan of modern but its disgusting what they did to that greystone. I’ll never understand the mismatch between exterior and interior I see so often. Talk about confused owners.
Many of those hideous, gaudy Victorians were ruined by being built in the first place.
