Get a Corner 1-Bedroom Loft with 2 Balconies in the Hot West Loop: 222 S. Racine

This corner 1-bedroom loft in the Daily News building at 222 S. Racine in the West Loop came on the market in July 2021.

Built in 1930, the Daily News building was converted into lofts in 2001. It has 43 units and a parking garage.

This unit is a unique corner loft with 2 walls of windows.

It has exposed brick walls and terra cotta ceilings along with hardwood floors throughout.

The loft has a galley kitchen with 42″ cabinets, granite counter tops and “updated” stainless steel appliances which opens to the wall of windows and a 42×5 private balcony.

The bedroom also has windows which look out on the balcony.

It has a walk-in-closet.

The loft also has 1.5 baths and a gas fireplace.

In addition to the large balcony, the loft also has a smaller balcony off the front of the unit that has views of the Willis Tower and the Chicago skyline.

The listing says it has a newer furnace (2018) and a new washer/dryer (2021).

It has central air and garage parking is $25,000 extra.

Originally listed in July 2021 at $359,900, it has been reduced to $325,000.

With the West Loop so hot the last few years, is over $300,000 the new starter condo price tag?

Morgan Sage and Christian Chacon at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices has the listing. See the pictures and floor plan here.

  1. Seems a bit odd that almost 20% of the units are currently for sale and 1 just sold in such a HAWT ™ and always booming West Loop

“Not one, but two exclusive outdoor spaces totaling 267sf incredible for entertaining and relaxing.”

LOL when I entertain, I prefer doing it in a hallway where guests are nuts to butts.

The 2BR that just sold went for $410 w/ parking. Think this is going to sell for $325 w/ parking

  2. Picture #15 is cool, with all the balconies and the Willis Tower in the distance. I bet it’s a wind tunnel in the winter, where all the people who smoke will step out to get some fresh air, lol.

The location is so-so, very far from the Fulton Market hip $cene. That Racine stop on the blue line is probably not that safe now under the BLM “pigs in a blanket, fry ’em like bacon” and anti-white era Lightfoot has ushered in.

So, I see units like this, in this location, and it’s obvious the buyer is not going to be on the fast track to a $1.8MM SFH in Roscoe Village or Lake View, otherwise they’d be in a more socially acceptable location earlier on.

You have to fear for some of these people, because they could fall into the urban trap of letting time fly-by, they get into their habits, and if they are below average in looks, start getting obese, etc. (Sabrina reminds us that half are below average by definition), they could very well end up alone. The city can do this to people, we all know it. Some of these people might have been better off living in Dubuque IA than a 1 bd in the far West Loop near the blue line.

These building have alot more people smoking weed now that it’s promoted by JB Pritzker and legal, the smell in the hallways…

  3. I feel sorry for the agent trying to sell this. Looks like living in a cave. That balcony squeezed between walls says it all.

There’s a reason that it’s basically flat since 2001, when this place was basically across the street from Dragaonland.

    Jul-01 + CPI = $315k

btw, regardless of what the MLS says about the parking, every deed conveyed both the parking spot and the unit.

There are million dollar condos being built on the corner by Belgravia.

Once again, this is your weekly reminder that helmethofer does NOT live in Chicago. And never has.

He has no idea what is going on in these neighborhoods.

Oh God, why do you have to lie when you are in fear of your BS being exposed? Gary knows, intuitively that I live here. I happen to live in the Wells HS district.

So what do I have to do? Tell you about Helix camera on Racine, walk down the street to UIC Pavilion, describe the interior of Our Lady of Pompeii, tell you what the school was like before it became a charter? Describe the entire layout of Tufano’s? Tell you what Ignatius grads told me about the school before the Walshes invested millions into it? Tell you about the nice wine shop next to Coldwell Banker on Madison? Explain Block Y and X? Tell you about the female cop I hit on when she ticketed me at the Racine police station? Do I need to walk up and down Ashland and Ogden? The pipe fitters union building, the crappy transient hotel near Union Park? billygoat? Ferrara bakery on Ogden? The St. teresa nuns near 24th and Oakley the old St. Michael’s? By the way, there are Antifa harassing that neighborhood right now, ask around. The older gangbangers are coming out to fight for it. What else? Sheridan park where kids play softball? Carm’s? Mercy Home? What else…Oxxford clothes, I know the RE group converting it to offices. The athletic club on Randolph used to be a basketball gym. I drove by the matchbox today, they new (jewish) owners still aren’t letting people into the bar, cause “covid liberals”. I was at the Mart Anthony fest on Hubbard a week ago, don’t tell anyone cause it’s perfect right now the way it is. Peronis were $7. The band played Free Bird.

Nobody who didn’t live in Chicago could type this, so stop being dishonest! don’t delete it either cause I’m copying it.

Do you tell them about your views of the Jews? Or do you save that only for us?

Who describes where they live by the high school?

Not even people with kids IN the high school describe it like that.

    Come on!

“I live in the Lane Tech HS district.”

    WTH?

    LMFAO.

Again, if HH actually lived in Chicago he would know that there are million dollar condos being built just across the street from this building and there are other million dollar condos already built a block away.

His depiction of this neighborhood as the ghetto or poor and scary (his usual fearmongering bullshit) is just that. Fearmongering bullshit by someone who doesn’t even live in Chicago.

That, of course, just means “I live in Chicago”.

    “the Racine police station”

WTF? 12th district? Who calls it “Racine”?

  12. I vote for HH and HD to start their own web site dedicated to trashing Chicago full time from their perches outside of the city. Then they can entertain themselves with all their apocalyptic raving and leave the rest of us alone.

You would have to add Bob to that site too, Dan #2.

They can post to each other, every day, about how all the cities are doomed.

Meanwhile, yet another huge housing development with 5 apartment towers on Goose Island is likely to be approved to move forward this week.

    But yeah, Chicago is “doomed.”

They just look silly at this point.
