Get a SFH with a 5-Car Garage in the Gold Coast for $9.4 Million: 54 E. Scott

This 5-bedroom contemporary single family home at 54 E. Scott in the Gold Coast came on the market in April 2022.

Built in 2010, it’s on a 45×145 lot and has a 5-car garage with a gated driveway.

It has an elevator.

The listing says it was the first LEED Gold certified home in Illinois. It also won the Historic Preservation Award for New Construction due to its compatibility with the 19th century historic homes surrounding it.

The house has a multi-story glass atrium and floating staircase.

It has 3 fireplaces and central air.

The house has a “state-of the art” contemporary kitchen with an island.

The living room and dining room face a courtyard with an Asian style water feature.

The kitchen, family room and breakfast room open to the terraced landscaped garden which has mature trees and multiple seating areas.

3 bedrooms are on the second floor including the primary suite which has a spa bath and a dressing room. The other 2 bedrooms on this floor are also en suite.

The remaining 2 bedrooms are on the third floor, and one could be configured into an in-law suite with a living/media room as there is a second kitchen.

Work from home? There’s a den and what looks like two offices, one on the main floor and one on the second.

There are also 2 rooftop gardens with container gardening including a sink and drainage.

The lower level has a “one-of-a-kind steampunk-style” game room and adjacent wine room.

There’s also a full bath, workshop and the 5 car garage with an electric car charger.

This house is in the heart of the Gold Coast and is near the shops and restaurants of Division and Rush street.

Listed at $9.4 million, is this a unique opportunity to get a “new” property in this historic neighborhood?

Jennifer Ames at Engel & Voelkers Chicago has the listing. See the pictures here.

  1. Love this place, except for that horrid basement. Wonder if they’ll get close to asking.

  2. They really went all in on the steam punk basement.

    WTF?!?

Not a steam punk fan, but the Gameroom looks pretty awesome (I’ll overlook the cord going to the pool table) The pool table alone is a showstopper.

The rest of the house is weird. 1/2 modern & 1/2 MCM

Wish they would have shown the garage and workshop

If one has the means to drop $10MM on a home, arent you building it to exactly your specs?

As you well know, not everyone with $$ knows or cares enough about design to go through that.

  5. This one’s a mixed bag. Parts are amazing, others not at all. Gameroom is pretty killer. I think I love the dining room? A place like this and at this price point probably shouldn’t have any shower curtains or shiplap.

  6. A $4M home in Chicago and $5M home someplace warm sound better to me but I’m not wealthy, so what do I know.

I always think that if you can allocate $Xm to resi, you can allocate $1.5Xm just as easily, and the question comes down to: can you spend enough time at house #2 to justify that investment, or would it be better to just stay at a hotel wherever you choose to go?

Now, if X=100, then have 10 houses–doesn’t matter how little time you spend at each of them.

I’d bet these folks already have a $5m house somewhere else, whether it’s warm or mountainous.

  8. I like the outdoor space. Seems very private. They spent a lot on the nice fencing. It has trees and several terraces. Also like the water feature. More people should landscape with water.

I agree with you JohnnyU that I was expecting to see some pictures of the garage and/or the workshop space. Would be cool to see what a 5-car garage in this neighborhood looks like.

True but the basement is likely getting ripped out day one by 99% of the buyers at this price point.

Yep. For a lot of them I think hotels often feel cramped and not very exclusive. And sometimes they’re fully booked (even the insane suites or mult-bedroom units). And the best houses aren’t always available to rent short term. Most of them can be spontaneous and depart for somewhere and stay longer or shorter if things change. And, of course, it’s a part of their identity to have a “presence” where their second or third homes are. And many just don’t want to sleep or poop where other people do so. I know a guy with a TH in Aspen who’s used it maybe once a year since he built it like a decade ago. Only this past year did he breakdown and rent it out for Christmas week (I think it nearly paid for the year’s taxes), otherwise it sits empty.

  11. Looks like someone spent some time at the Chicago House of Blues Foundation Room prior to building this space. Used to be a member there in my youth. They have these smaller private rooms that look quite similar to the game room.

Always said that when I moved to a big house that I’d create a room in similar fashion. They were great spaces for entertaining a small group. Looks like I forgot until today. Anyone want to help me convince the wife we need that at our house?
