Gold Coast Benjamin Marshall Maisonette Still Available at 1544 N. State Parkway

This 3-bedroom in Benjamin Marshall’s Gold Coast masterpiece at 1544 N. State Parkway came on the market in May 2019.

We chattered about it several times in the past including last December 2019 after it had been renovated.

See our chatter here.

1550 N. State Parkway was constructed in 1912 and has just 32 units. It’s exterior is covered in limestone.

It has a doorman but no parking.

What is little known about the building is that it also has a shorter side building with maisonettes at 1544 N. State Parkway. This unit is one of those maisonettes (pictured above).

It has a separate private entrance through the landscaped courtyard.

The units don’t have the same tall ceilings and vintage features as the main building.

This unit was a short sale for several years and appears to finally have sold in an auction from the bank in 2016.

It’s now been renovated and has a new kitchen and baths.

The listing calls it a “dream kitchen and wet bar” with European materials with 10-foot island and full counters and backsplash in Taj Mahal Quartzite. It has Thermador appliances with “touch open” technology.

The bathrooms have custom vanities.

There’s a decorative fireplace, built-ins and some vintage crown molding in the living/dining room.

It has radiator heating and space pak air conditioning.

It does have in-unit washer/dryer but no parking.

The unit was originally listed at $1,049,999 in May 2019 and has now been reduced to $899,000.

What price will it take to get this sale done?

Kenneth Dooley at Compass has the listing. See the pictures here.

  1. Nice that they photoshopped a fire in the decorative fireplace

Looks like it was designed by someone’s side piece who’s an “Interior Designer”, ripped out of the pages of ArchDig. The 1/2 step off the kitchen is a nogo

    LOL at the HOA

  2. Does anyone actually want a wetbar *in* their kitchen? WTF did that idea come from?

  3. seems perfectly nice for someone with a unique life situation like no kids or a peculiar bachelor. comments are haters, but i think it’s kewl and real gold coast is still lovely.

  4. Conceived by someone who doesn’t understand what context is. If these finishes were in some new construction wanna-be-modern by a no-pedigree designer building, it would be one thing…Not in a historic maisonette!

Four months later I still hate it……particularly the light fixtures. Has a very corporate office glow to it. Definitely need to put on some blue light filtering skin cream before setting foot in here.

  5. Not again! I’ve had nightmares about this one. I’m convinced it’s one of the worst properties ever featured on CC.

  6. Omfg the light fixtures ARE awful! The rest of the design is just as tacky.

    Lol.

It’s crazy how the finishes can mess with you.

  8. I’m the outlier here on the wet bar idea. Perhaps because I see it in a different light. More as as a great serving/cleanup/pre dinner cocktail type service bar. Not as a 70’s Palm Springs hip cocktail (wet) bar that everyone would sit at for hours and get hammered.

  9. Still hasn’t sold. Now reduced to $835K. Are we approaching sale territory? Approaching the price point where one could fix some of the god awful choices made by the interior dreckorator. I say $800K gets it done….

  10. Whoa. What does this mean? As a refresher, this is the Maisonette that someone “renovated” to make it look like shared office space:

  11. Never mind. The “auction” listing may be how the 2016 person purchased it for so little they had no compunction about destroying the interior. It is now listed for rent for a mere $6K per month:
