Is This the Coolest House Ever Built in Lincoln Park? 1970 N. Burling

1970 n burling #1

This 5-bedroom custom built single family home at 1970 N. Burling in Lincoln Park came on the market in September 2015.

Built in 2010 on an oversized 45×122.5 lot, it sits on the corner of Burling and Armitage.

You may have walked by its tall brick walls on Armitage and wondered what was behind them.

Now’s your chance.

There’s an urban garden with outdoor seating and California-like indoor-outdoor living.

This house has a loft-like feel with big industrial windows, metalwork, timber ceilings and exposed brick.

There’s a sauna, a hot tub and a 900 bottle wine cellar.

Check out the pictures of what seems to be the master bathroom with a walk-in shower with multiple shower heads and a door from that shower that appears to lead to an outdoor deck.

There’s a guest suite coach house over the attached garage with a full kitchen.

Even the 3-car garage has amazing details, including a brick floor.

Why aren’t more luxury homes built like this one?

Emily Sachs Wong at @Properties has the listing. See the pictures here.

  1. As long as I can put some armed guards patrolling along the fence line, I’m in.

Wish they would have went with the rugged brick/timber throughout, the refined areas seem out of place.

  2. Lovely place and I do with builders would be a little more creative architecturally. However, the size of this home just seems obnoxious. Maybe it is the brick fence. As JohnnyU said above, the fence makes the home looks like it is a cartel drug lord’s Chicago getaway.

I don’t know. Maybe, drug lords have to work for their money?

  6. If you’re going to live out in the boonies, might as well be in this fabulous compound. That garage…

  7. The owner worked in construction from what I recall. Isn’t this the house that had the blue art piece removed?

  8. Until today, I didn’t know that I wanted a balcony in my shower. Now, it’s all I can think about.

I don’t care for the exterior, but I think the interior is very nice. Unfortunately, a lot of the furnishings are very distracting. Too many patterns and conflicting styles!

However, it’s nice to see something that isn’t cookie cutter.

  9. This was clearly designed as a true CUSTOM single family house. I think the taste is very specific. It is such a wonderful contrast to the “chic and banal” that homes at this price point seem to have. This is a beautifully crafted and designed home. The quality is apparent.

  12. Yes…. Uber cool!

And speaking of cool. That shower in the winter would likely be a cool one. Unless all the stone is heated. Which is highly likely in this type of build out. If not, gonna use lots of hot water to keep you comfy.

We have a skylight and two outside walls over my master shower and it’s a cold room in the am.

  14. Yes… and with the area taking off (Mariano’s, Elston redirect, Hinkel Steel leaving) the price doesn’t seem too outlandish for all that land. If one had the means, loved the home and planned to live there a while, it would likely be a wise investment.

  17. No way I’d pay someone $1,150 per sf for this. I’d build my own place for that money.

  18. I’m told that a member of the Novak Construction family moved into a stunning home recently built on south Engle Blvd in Park Ridge. Very high end home. Could be the same owner but seems like a step down from the Burling mansion.

    Perhaps a relative?

  19. “I’d build my own place for that money.” Why am I not surprised he completely misses the basics of cost & value.

Seller paid $3 mil for this lot in ’09 (then in foreclosure iirc). Land cost increased exponentially here since – Parillo paid $8.3 mil. for his lot for SFR on this block. Penny P paid more than $7 mi. for smaller lot. Good luck with that plan.
